June 20, 2019

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Advisory Committee and the FCPS Fashion Careers program were honored by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) as two of 15 exemplary career and technical education (CTE) programs and partnerships. The awards were presented during the annual Creating Excellence Awards program in Richmond in June.

Jin-A Chang of Fairfax Academy was recognized as the Region 4 winner of an Exemplary Secondary Program for her work with the Fashion Careers class. Students explore in-depth the creative process and develop technical skills in the areas of design concepts, sketching, textiles, patternmaking, garment construction, and related design technologies.

The Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department was recognized as a state winner of the 2018-19 Career and Technical Education Creating Excellence Award for Exemplary Secondary Advisory Committee of the High School Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs. The firefighting class is held at the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue training facility. Firefighting professionals participate daily and serve as adjunct professors to the program.

Since the inception of the EMT program, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue has provided support such as ride-along opportunities, and helps students gain the contacts needed for EMT certification, donates industry regulated equipment for the classroom to be used in skill development, and supports programs such as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Certification, individual mentorships, and industry certification assistance.
