FCPS Announces Open Enrollment for Two-Way and World Languages Immersion Programs

News Release
January 12, 2018

Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) online registration for the county-wide lottery for two-way and world language immersion programs will open on Thursday, February 1.  Informational meetings will begin on Wednesday, January 17. Current prekindergarten students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2018-19 school year.

The kindergarten immersion programs are available in Korean and Spanish.  Korean is available at Colin Powell and Spanish is available at Bailey’s, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, and Rose Hill Elementary Schools.  First grade immersion programs are available at 12 elementary schools and are offered in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

In the immersion program, students spend approximately half of each day learning mathematics, science, and health in the target language. The other half of the day is spent learning social studies, language arts, and the Family Life Education portion of health in English.

There are no formal criteria for enrollment, but the program is only open to residents of Fairfax County. Registration is available online.  A SIS parent account is required to complete the application.  If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required to obtain a SIS parent account.

Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, for the first grade immersion program and by 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 5, for the kindergarten immersion program.  Families will be notified regarding lottery outcomes via email on Tuesday, March 15, for the first grade immersion programs and on Tuesday, April 17, for the kindergarten program.  Transportation will not be provided for students residing outside the immersion school’s attendance area.

On May 25, 2017, the Fairfax County School Board approved a one-time non-refundable pupil placement fee of $100 per student, Notice 5922, Section XVII.  This one-time non-refundable fee will apply to all students accessing Immersion Program placements outside of their base school effective at the beginning of the 2018-19 school year and will be integrated and collected within the online final school selection and acceptance process.

Parents who are interested in the two-way or world languages immersion programs in FCPS are encouraged to attend one of the following informational meetings.  All meetings are held at the school identified.
