Distance Learning: Herndon ES
At Herndon Elementary, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) teacher Mike McHenry, school counselor Brian Falkey, librarian Sarah Richardson, and advanced academics resource teacher Jackie Kwon challenged their students to become members of the N.E.R.D.S. (Neural Enhancement Revitalization Development Squad) by completing 19 critical and creative thinking missions. The team released one video challenge each morning for 20 days. The videos were designed to be silly and fun so students would engage and feel supported through their transition away from the school building. The kid-friendly challenges ranged from creating a phone holder to help secret agent Waddles on his missions, identifying sources of germ transmission, and making and marketing one’s own candy bar, to a conversation with the counselor exploring the concept of change. Herndon students have shared over 450 submissions to the N.E.R.D.S. Google Classroom and the teachers have loved seeing the students’ creativity and problem solving. Now the team is working on a new daily video series entitled “All Things PoG and Positivity” to explicitly name and notice opportunities to develop Portrait of a Graduate and Positivity Project attributes while at home.
