NOVA Jump Start – New Opportunity for Current and Rising Seniors

Earlier today, NOVA announced the launch of JumpStart , a new opportunity for current and rising seniors to NOVA to take up to two, tuition-free online college courses this summer. NOVA has identified a specific set of courses available through this initiative, including courses for NOVA degree requirements that are also highly transferable credits to four-year institutions as well as coursework in cloud computing through a collaboration with Amazon Web Services. We are excited to partner with NOVA on this opportunity and will market this opportunity to our students and families as additional details about qualifications and registration emerge.

VDOE Q and A

What procedures should school divisions implement to identify potential English learners (ELs) who enroll during the mandated school closure?

School divisions must ensure that ELs are identified, screened, and placed in appropriate programs and services within thirty days of enrollment [ESEA Section 3211(b)(2)(A)]. At this time, there is no guidance from the U. S. Department of Education regarding extending or waiving this timeline. School divisions enrolling students during the mandated school closure should develop a process to conduct initial steps in the EL screening process. School divisions may make provisional EL determinations and may provide supports to newly-enrolled students that will assist them in participating meaningfully and equally in the district’s remote learning program during school closure. Guidelines and considerations are below.

School Outreach

Bull Run ES

Good Morning BRES Bulls families,

This is hard. We know, there is nothing to compare to the times we’re going through right now, and we want to get through them together. Words cannot begin to express how proud I am of you, our students and BRES staff as we make way on the open seas. As Dr. Brabrand’s message stated last night, it is necessary to pause this week’s distance learning schedule to allow the technical teams of FCPS and Blackboard to make the necessary updates and patches to the system. This will take some time and we will regroup better than ever next week to re-engage with our beloved students and continue fostering relationships and learning together as a community.

Freedom Hill ES

Good morning Freedom Hill families,

As you received from FCPS, the synchronous distance learning lessons have been cancelled for the remainder of the week. Parents should expect to hear from their child’s classroom teacher by noon today as they provide learning opportunities students may complete while live sessions are not possible. This will include activities posted in Blackboard 24/7 from our ESOL and specialist teachers, as well. Keep in mind, that while these are all optional, our staff is committed to continuing the rhythm established on Tuesday.

Thank you for your partnership and positive messaging this week. We know a safe distance learning community is ahead and are happy to be on this journey with you. Please assure your student(s) that we are excited for more days together starting on Monday.

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal
