Student Teaching

Nurturing your professional development

Student Teaching and Internships

Student teaching and internships are the single most important experiences in a teacher preparation program. That's why each year, Fairfax County Public Schools offers quality teaching experiences to more than 500 student teachers and interns.

We are strengthening our partnerships with colleges and universities to nurture the professional growth of the next generation of teachers and to provide for quality learning experiences for the children in our schools. Arrangements for student teachers are made through the Department of Human Resources working with college and university placement offices.

The student teaching and internship application process include the following steps:

  • A referral from your college or university.
  • A completed online application accessed through your college or university placement coordinator.
  • An uploaded resume.

Student Internship Application Deadline Dates

  • To student teach in the fall, the application deadline is March 15.
  • To student teach in the spring, the application deadline is November 14.

The Department of Human Resources will provide specific details of acceptance to the college or university placement coordinator who will then notify the student.

To complete the placement process, student interns will need to be fingerprinted for a criminal background check three weeks prior to their first day at the assigned placement.

Fairfax County Public Schools will pay the fee for this requirement. Students will be provided with an FCPS employee photo identification badge which must be worn at all times when in an FCPS school. Upon completion of your final student teaching or internship placement(s), your badge must be returned to the principal of that school.

Please report to the Welcome Center on the first floor of the

Gatehouse Administration Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Falls Church, VA 22042.

Hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.  Fingerprinting appointments are mandatory, and each student will have access to book an appointment online.
