FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Central:  Tony Klepic, Sprague Technology Center

"Tony has gone above and beyond in supporting Timber Lane these past few weeks ramping up to the start of school.  During a time of overwhelming laptop needs, Tony rolled up his sleeves, called up a retired TSPEC and both of them spent a week at Timber Lane re-imaging laptops, helping with a huge distribution demand, and mentoring a new TSPEC. Tony also noticed our custodians demolition work resulted in unexpected damage to some of our trim and woodwork.  Tony volunteered to make us a piece to replace the woodwork damage that was done (in his spare time).  Tony also came to the rescue today (9/3/20) assuring us that despite a possibility of being without an SBTS and TSPEC on the first day of school - he would be there and would ensure a second person would be there as well to help all staff and family tech needs!  This is a great example of FCPS's premiere workforce!"

- Ben Chiet, Timber Lane ES

Region 1:  Tamara Durfee, South Lakes HS

"My daughter and her friend, both SLHS students, were out walking when they noticed someone following them.  As they were trying to get away, they saw Ms. Durfee up ahead and recognized her from school. The girls ran up, introduced themselves, and told Ms.Durfee what was happening.  Ms. Durfee told the girls to stay with her, and she walked with my daughter and her friend all the way to their car, then stood and waited until they pulled safely out of the parking garage.  All this out in the community on a holiday.  I can't thank her enough."

- a South Lakes HS Parent

-------

Region 2:  Sarah Wegener, Justice HS

"Ms. Wegener has been enthusiastically working hard to design authentic project based assessments for our students - making learning applicable to their daily lives, including a virtual learning environment."

- Vidhya Sankaranarayanan, Justice HS

and

Region 2:  Sarah Wegener, Justice HS

"Sarah always goes above and beyond to create engaging authentic learning opportunities for our students. Although virtual learning has been overwhelming, she took this as a time to think outside of the box with regards to engaging students. She used money from a grant to buy video cameras to set up in the environment around our high school. These are being used for all of our biology students to watch and take data and complete their own science experiment (all from the comfort of their home). Her commitment to trying and implementing new ideas is admirable and she is always willing to help with a task in our CT. Having a colleague like Sarah during these unprecedented times makes me feel more relaxed and confident in our ability as teachers!"

- Brooke Gehenio, Justice HS

-------

Region 3:  Rachael Smith, Fort Hunt ES

Kindergarten teacher Rachael Smith goes above and beyond to bring ALL her students to class.  I personally witnessed (from a virtual distance) her FaceTime with a child’s mother for over 40 minutes(!) as they worked out the technical hiccups on the child’s computer.  Upon solving the problems, she got the mother to show up on BBCU.  Then for the first time ever, the child was able to show up to her kindergarten class!  Now we have all 19 kids participating.  This is my third year working with Mrs. Smith and she’s always been a great mentor, but on this day she floored me with her patience and commitment.  Kudos to raising the bar at an already hard working school of professionals:  FORT HUNT!!!

-  Bill Hurd, Fort Hunt ES

-------

Region 4:  Maria Eliana Lopez Reyna, Mountain View HS

"Maria "Eliana"Lopez Reyna is our parent liaison at Mountain View. She has been an invaluable support for our ELL students and teachers as we began distance learning.  She has repeatedly followed up with our students who are having difficulty logging in to classes.  She will face time our ELL students and walk them step by step into logging into the class or google classroom. Eliana will reach out to students in the evening to follow up with students to make sure they felt successful logging in to the classes and if they still felt uncomfortable or had problems logging in, she meets them on face time the next day to try it all over again.  She helps them troubleshoot any technology issues they may have (wifi, microphone or links).  After over forty students  and multiple "helping sessions"  with each one (in just one week), she has only had to refer one student on to the county tech help site. The students know her well and feel comfortable sharing their difficulties/lack of understanding in accessing the technology with distance learning with her (they aren't students who would access the tech help desk on their own).  In just a matter of days she raised the class size in one ELL class to 4 times the rate of the first day - just by helping the students log in to class one student at a time/one face time phone call at a time. She has been tireless in her efforts to make sure every single one of our ELL students not only knows how to access each class, but follows up with the each teacher and student to make sure they really did attend class.  The staff at of Mountain View are grateful for her support of and advocacy for our students.  She truly embodies the school logo of Family, Love and Respect!"

- Jennifer Crump-Strawderman, Mountain View HS

-------

Region 5:  Andrew Garcia, Chantilly HS

"Mr. Garcia is a professional gentleman. He would lend me a hand with my ties because I stink at tying ties. Mr. Garcia also looked out for me when I had been diagnosed with depression and told me about counseling services. Mr. Garcia also noticed I was having difficulty with minors at Oak Hill Elementary School and consented to me trying out a shadow at USGS. Mr. Garcia also authorized me to return to my volunteer job at USGS when I returned to STEP After a year at WWRC. He deserves a raise and we need more people like him."

- a Chantilly HS Student

Other FCPS CARES Recipients

Mark Khosravi, Lake Braddock SS

"One of my students was having a difficult time with the technology pieces of distance learning, and keeping track of class links. I met the student outside of his home to help him find his class links. While I was there, we were able to log into his advisory class with Mark Khosravi. As we both were listening, Mr. Khosravi spoke with his new students so genuinely and with vulnerability-- talking about his own struggles and the steep learning curve of learning so many new technology tools, and the worry of not doing it well. The student I was helping said, "He's not like a lot of teachers. When he talks that way, it's like he lets us know it's okay for us to make mistakes, too. He cool like that." Way to go, Mr. Khosravi!!"

- Jacquie Naughton, Lake Braddock SS

-------

Amanda Moreland, Lake Braddock SS

"On Friday, September 25, I emailed several teachers that they would be getting a new student to their classes starting on Tuesday. The student was eager to return to school, but nervous--as he is a 21 year old special education student who is returning to try and earn a standard diploma. Amanda took it upon herself to call the student to welcome him to her class, before he even began. It was just the kind of kindness he needed to feel a little bit less nervous and more supported. Amanda's awesome and all about building relationships."

- Jacquie Naughton, Lake Braddock SS

-------

Kat Frazier, Lake Braddock SS

"On September 28, I reached out to the teachers of one of my students to share that the student would be out for medical reasons for an extended period of time, with no access to the internet. I asked for some help/creativity to continue to support this student's forward progress in class. In less than 24 hours, Kat had already replied with an idea and a willingness to support any way she could for his English class. I'm so appreciative of her care and concern for this student, even while he is not 'in her class.'"

- Jacquie Naughton, Lake Braddock SS

-------

Julie Evans and Elizabeth Moore, Lake Braddock SS

"On September 29, I reached out to Elizabeth Moore and Julie Evans to let them know one of my students was feeling too shy about directly going to their office hours for help, even though he felt a little lost, because he didn't "really know them". Without hesitation, Julie and Elizabeth agreed to come to my virtual office at the beginning of their lunch break to meet with our mutual student "face to face".  They were warm, funny, and supportive--answering all of our student's questions and--as he reported-- he felt "much better" by the time we finished up. I have no doubt he would seek them out again, knowing how helpful and kind they are.  SO, so appreciative of these two teachers who always put students first!!"

- Jacquie Naughton, Lake Braddock SS

-------

Brian Smith, Hunters Woods ES

"Since the start of COVID, Mr. Smith has gone out of his way to ensure that strings students at Hunters Woods have support and resources to keep learning to play their instruments. In the spring, he was among the first teachers to start - and continue - posting useful content online and offer creative ways for student Las to get feedback. This fall, he invited them to drop off instruments for tuning and adjustment at the school, which he did quickly, and it must be a lot of work for him. He always projects enthusiasm and excitement and encouragement, which really helps the kids stay engaged, especially now. Thanks, Mr. Smith!"

Azita Bakhtiani, Hamdi Aly, Sandie Castle, Tammy Walls, Karen Miller, Transportation - Stonecroft

"What an impressive act of generosity! When others step out of their typical role and offer sincere kindness and efforts, it impresses me. I say sincere, because we all have heard others say they will be there for us, but when people don’t say it, they do it, that’s what I’m talking about!! Karen Miller, Transportation Supervisor, coordinated an effort of which I will not soon forget. When Azita Bakhtiani, Hamdi Aly, Sandie Castle, and Tammy Walls came to my rescue I was impressed from the moment they walked in the door the morning of Wednesday, September 16th to our Library at McNair Elementary. These, and all bus drivers, care for and safely transport thousands of students to our schools; and do so knowing these are precious lives they are responsible for and dedicated to. Having never worked in a library they were certainly out of their comfort zone. When I told them that putting books in numeric order would take hours, they might have thought I was crazy. Yet, after spending days, yes days, not hours, putting books in order then moving them to the shelves, they never complained and constantly offered to do more! Azita, Hamdi, Sandie, and Tammy sat, stood, kneeled, bent, reached, lifted, carried, and organized over 2,200 books! Some days they were here before I was, ready to work! They barely even stopped for a fast lunch break. Every time I turned around there they were, working! Each of them worked on something very new to them and did it with amazing accuracy and attention to detail. I was so humbled by their sincere generosity and their work ethic. After our library assistant was de-staffed, the work has seriously started to pile up. With the help of Azita, Hamdi, Sandie, and Tammy, and their 224-man hours, I’m beginning to have our library ready for our students to check out fabulous books! They worked for almost two weeks straight; and to this day already have plans to come back and help more! Thanks to this amazing team, I’m feeling grateful for those who do, and not just say, they will help. Azita Bakhtiani, Hamdi Aly, Sandie Castle, and Tammy Walls care! I want everyone to know that it is team players like them who come to the rescue when others really need help and support. THEY are the ones who can really say: We are here for you.  They put in so much time and effort, they were so amazing, and they did it selflessly, to help me, our school, and the students! THANK YOU Azita, Hamdi, Sandie, Tammy, and Karen!"

- Kristen Pappano, McNair ES

-------

Dilkash Ahmed, Graham Road Community Center

"I would like to express my appreciation for the valuable interpreting services of Dilkash Ahmed.  Dilkash has been a lifeline, helping two Bengali-speaking students and their family navigate all the links and learning platforms that have been required for virtual learning.  Dilkash is dedicated, conscientious and absolutely reliable.  Her familiarity with FCPS learning platforms enables her to work efficiently to resolve issues.  I know the family of these students is also deeply grateful for the help Dilkash has given."

- Maureen McCormick, Laurel Ridge ES

- Paul Steiner, Pimmit Hills Center

-------

Helen Canepa and FCPS Wellness Team, Gatehouse Administration Center

"A huge thank you to the FCPS Wellness Team and Helen Canepa for a fitness class schedule that’s making a big dent in keeping us healthy and fit! The diverse classes, often including Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, stretch, boot camp and kickboxing, provide a nice range of choices to stay fit especially for those of us quarantining at home.  Helen and her team are efficient in sending schedules, links and class recordings and are also very friendly and welcoming whenever questions arise."

- Grace Edmonds, Gatehouse Administration Center

-------

"Theresa is an outstanding Instructional Assistant who always works hard to develop positive relationships with students in order to support their academic success. This past week Theresa went above and beyond to make a difference in the life of one student. This is just one example of the type of work Theresa does all the time."

- Chris Berg-Hoggatt, Frost MS

-------

Tricia Pentz, Clearview ES

"I nominate Ms. Pentz for this award because she has gone above and beyond to ensure my child has a great virtual learning experience. Emily Pyatt-Openshaw, Kilmer MS

"Math teachers at Irving have shifted to a standards based gradebook this year and still had some questions about the set up, assessments and grading. Emily took time out of her day to talk through Kilmer's journey and answer logistical questions with our department chairs. It was so helpful to hear how another school had already put this into practice and we are so grateful for Emily's expertise!"

- Meg Gollinger, Irving MS

-------

Henry Miller, Sideburn Support Center

"Henry works at 20 schools around the Division.  This is an e-mail from Shelby Stilwell: 'The purpose of this email is to express my gratitude and appreciation for Mr. Henry Miller.  He is truly one awesome guy.  I look forward to his visits here at Mount Vernon High School because he is so friendly and helpful.  He keeps the communication channels open and he is willing to work with us on anything.  At the end of each visit he asks if we need assistance with anything. His approach is to help and work with you, not against you.  Many times he shows up for weekend events to make sure the system is working correctly and everyone is content. When we have issues, I can reach out to him and he is on the task, working to correct the issue. Mr. Miller is dedicated. On today’s visit, Mr. Miller showed me the boiler and explained what the steamfitters were doing today in their repairs. I got to see the inside of the machine and steamfitter explained the piping system and his repairs. Mr. Miller explained how the boiler works to control the temperature in the building. Then he showed me the chillers and the different piping in the boiler room, and the tower outside. This was very helpful to really understand the basics of how the building is heated and cooled.  I appreciate the time to explain it and give a tour. I go to the boiler room sometimes but never really understood what the machines are doing and how the system operates. My request is to please recognize him for his efficiency, competence and professionalism.'"

- Shelby Stilwell, Mt. Vernon HS and John Lord, Sideburn Support Center

Rachel Williams, Glen Forest ES

"Ms. Williams is my 3rd grade classes art teacher. She has also been designated as my support during Morning Meetings in the virtual classroom. She has really become a member of our class and gone above and beyond expectations. She participates in our Freaky Friday events, has made new connections with our class and  helps me create break-out groups. She has made herself available to help students in break-out groups add pictures to their virtual writing notebooks, and has made positive comments in their notebooks. She even created groups to help students and parents fill out the consent form so we can use more engaging tech in the classroom. I am so grateful for her positive presence and willingness to help."

- Sara Forsyth, Glen Forest ES

-------

Laura Christadore, Lake Braddock SS

"Laura Christadore, librarian and web curator at Lake Braddock Secondary, was an invaluable key to communication with our LBSS community regarding SAT School Day and Saturday SATs. Laura jumped right in and created two separate SAT pages for the different events. As information was constantly evolving, sometimes daily, she took the time out of her busy schedule to update the the site pages with the new information in an easy-to-read format so that our students, parents, and staff had key information regarding these separate tests and test protocols. Knowing our community could easily access this information helped our team move forward and we are greatly indebted to Laura for her initiative and team work."

- Jennifer Bury & Kat Young, Lake Braddock SS

Elsa Fisher, Marta Kritselis, Jorge Santillan, Mohamed Ibrahim, Berry Cromer, Transportation - Stonecroft

"Our school has undertaken and is working on a book distribution mission to ensure all students are receiving quality books that they can read at home and to enhance their learning.  It is a large task, which includes pulling books from shelves, putting books into bags, organizing the bags, and ensuring these bags get to families.  Elsa, Marta, Jorge, Mohamed, and Berry volunteered their time to help us prepare books and put them into bags for our students and families. We are eternally grateful they were able to support us in this endeavor. Although, we have not had an opportunity to work with them before, we are grateful for their time and effort to support us in making this possible for our students.  THANK YOU Elsa, Marta, Jorge, Mohamad, and Berry!"

She is generous with sharing her technological skills and resources which has helped our CT become stronger."

Lise Greenfield, Oakton ES

"Our son who accesses Special Education curriculum has a hard time at the beginning of the year. Every year we hold our breath unsure of how he will be with his new learning environment. He takes a long time to warm up to his teachers and classmates. To say we were shocked would be an understatement when we found out he read to Ms. Greenfield the first week of school. This is a remarkable event. We cannot express our appreciation to Ms. Greenfield enough, and how much we are encouraged by the progress we are seeing with our son. Especially considering we are in a virtual setting. Thank you for everything you are doing. It is noticed, it is making an impact, and it is appreciated. Thank you so much."

Diana Lins, Centreville ES

"Mrs. Lins is the epitome of THE ideal teacher!  I have had 2 children who have had Mrs. Lins as their kindergarten teacher, one before COVID (2017) and currently.  I could not ask for a better person to support, encourage, push and engage my children with such grace! Mrs. Lins has an amazing amount of patience, acceptance and love for each child in her class and it shines through. Most recently during distance learning Mrs. Lins and her team of support have been an excitement for my kindergartener to look forward to every day!  The way she talks with kids is amazing, she is always smiling and genuinely happy to see them. If my child gets frustrated she checks in with them and always seems to know what to say or do to help her get in a better mood and refocused on learning!  I can tell my child is learning through distance learning and likes school, and it is because of Mrs. Lins and her wonderful team of support!!!  Thank You!!"

"Ms. Tobin stayed in touch with our child during the spring and summer during the pandemic. She is always very kind, positive and encouraging. During lockdown she dropped a goodie bag for our son with books, fidgets, goodies and a hand sanitizer bottles, at the time when they were impossible to buy in the store! She did it at least twice and brought it to our doorstep with a heartfelt note. Clearly it is beyond anything we would expect, but it was such a nice and kind gesture, especially in these stressful times. My son will definitely remember Ms. Tobin!"

-------

Isaac Bumgardner, Westfield HS

"Isaac is new to the role of an ADSA this year, but hardly new to our community!  He has stepped up to help with so many tasks beyond his role through this closure.  I would have struggled immensely without his support and assistance. He has graciously learned new methods and how to solve problems narrowly connected to and also WAY outside of his role and we're all better for it.  A few of the tasks he's helped with:  updating our internal and public websites, freshmen laptop distribution, changing passwords for new students, setting up groups in Schoology for clubs and teams, sorting out account issues for club sponsors and coaches to meet in a virtual world and so many more!  These are just the things he has helped me with and I KNOW he's showing up for others in the same way. I greatly appreciate his kindness and willingness to jump in."

- Margaret Sisler, Westfield HS

-------

Haley Badie, Fort Belvoir ES

"After being unable to connect via phone several times to provide a two week check-in on my kindergartener, Ms. Badie sent an email letting me know of his progress. I appreciate her effort to not only let me know how he was doing from her perspective but that she also inquired about how things were going at home with this virtual learning environment. She wanted to know if there were any particular struggles, if we had and questions or if there was any way she could help. She is always reaching out to send us parents reminders about upcoming activities with our students. She also is available constantly if we have questions. I appreciate her making the time to sooth this Kindergarten momma's fears and questions with this new virtual platform."

Sarah Padilla, RL Andrews, Chrissy Fulfaro, Morgan Sohl, Lake Braddock SS

"Sarah Padilla (World Languages Department Chair), RL Andrews (Spanish Teacher),  Chrissy Fulfaro (Spanish Teacher) and Morgan Sohl (Spanish Teacher) have done an incredible job working collaboratively and leading the World Languages team to implement a more standards based grading model.  With emphasis on students acquiring communication benchmarks in a virtual world in the areas of interpersonal communication, presentational speaking and presentation writing, they have worked to provide resources to CT teams to ensure both teams and students are ultimately successful. They continue to work with teams  on vertical alignment and cross curricular mastery of standards.  They have done a great deal of work to provide sample project based benchmark assessments so teachers are able to assess students in a virtual environment.  This work is directly aligned with the school vision and mission!  Sarah, RL, Chrissy and Morgan, Thank you for your dedication and leadership!"

Bethany delivered the preschool supplies to our home on her day off and created and laminated a visual schedule when I expressed that our son was struggling with following daily routines.  They're knowledgeable, patient, attentive, and very supportive. Their class agenda and activities are organized, engaging, and enhances learning.  Thank you so much Bethany and Diana for all your hard work and support!"

Robin Borean, Sprague Center

"Throughout my first weeks as a new school-based administrator, Robin went above and beyond to support my newly hired special education teachers.  Robin worked to get my new teachers access to SIS so teachers could contact parents to introduce themselves and take daily attendance. Robin’s commitment to the students and staff at Hayfield is unmatched and we are lucky to have her as part of our learning community.  Thank you, Robin!"

Brandon Harvey, Justice HS

"Brandon is an amazing educator and communicator.  We team together for the first time this year all virtual.  I cannot say enough about how amazing he has made the start of the year for our students.  I love how he teaches students Physics but the best thing is building relationships and helping our students succeed day in and day out.  He never lets a student leave feeling uneasy or confused and that means so much.  We are lucky to have him at Justice HS."

- Derrick Dent, Justice HS

Allison Levy, Robinson SS

"Thank you, Ms. Levy, for taking the time to send my son a postcard welcoming him to your Honors Government class prior to school starting. I understand that teachers needed to spend a lot of time preparing for distance learning, so your personalized note meant a lot to our family. Please know that we appreciate the time you take to send weekly email updates informing families of what has transpired in your class each week as well as reminding us of upcoming assignments. You are appreciated!"

William Root, Daniels Run ES

"I have been blown away by Mr. Root's efforts to individualize my son's physical education! He has reached out these 3 weeks of school to give us picture and audio descriptions of adapted movements. Today, within 90 minutes, Mr. Root reached out to us with the information he had, received the Gen Ed plans himself, adapted the movements, created a PowerPoint including embedded, custom audio descriptions for my son, and picture/video clips for me. This was so touching. It means so much. For my son, it is the difference between frustration and motivated movement.  In a time when everyone is struggling through unprecedented experiences, Mr. Root has been a solid, reliable, kind, supportive beacon and my son looks forward to working with him each week!"

Clinton Sower, Willow Oaks

"Clinton is amazing.  He is a problem solver and always interested in facilitating ways to make data accessible to schools to help with monitoring programs and progress.  In the spring and on a tight timeframe, he designed a system for parents to let us know about AAP choice of center or local level IV placement.  He is helping us gather school improvement goals around Young Scholars so that schools can learn from one another and make the work more visible.  We are so grateful!  Thank you, Clinton!"

Tamara Slanoc, Sandburg MS

"I would like to recognize Tamara Slanoc, a special education teacher at Sandburg Middle School. I have worked with her for a few years now and we have collaborated a lot in the last few weeks in the distance learning environment. She is lead for a technology program at Sandburg and always goes above and beyond to communicate and collaborate with me and to support her colleagues and students use of the program. Additionally, she is the case manager for students and has worked closely with myself, her students and their families to make sure all of their individual assistive technology needs were set up. We have emailed as well as met virtually a few times and today she invited me to join one of her classes. With everything going on, her attention to detail and communication with colleagues and families has been remarkable. Thank you Ms. Slanoc for demonstrating why Sandburg Cares!"

Daniel Schroll, Poplar Tree ES

"Daniel Schroll is truly an amazing asset to our Poplar Tree school community, especially during these demanding times.  He has been working diligently to provide us, his colleagues, both academic and emotional support.  First, as our Mathematics Lead Teacher, he has shared his expertise by creating an informative math modules site, hosted a staff Q and A session, met with individual teachers many times to plan virtual instruction, emailed a weekly math update, and produced perfectly timed videos, addressing topics that are causing frustration.  Daniel's ability to respectfully and generously collaborate with his fellow educators is wonderful.  He knows how to calm our fears and reassure us that "WE CAN DO HARD THINGS!" In addition to providing this much needed and appreciated academic support, Daniel started a Positivity Group with an emphasis on self-care.  Each morning, he sends the group members a theme song and a short inspirational message to start our day off with a smile or laugh. I know personally, I look forward to receiving these motivational messages and know that they are making this challenging journey a little more manageable. Daniel has been a ray of sunshine during one of the hardest school years that most of us has ever experienced.  We would be lost without him here at Poplar Tree!  Please consider giving Daniel the C.A.R.E.S. Award."

Suzanne Metz, Steve Kimball, Teryl Pomeroy, Maura Madigan, North Springfield ES

"Today was so much better than last Monday, and it was because of the NSES specialists. Ms. Metz, Mr. Kimball, Ms. Pomeroy, and Ms. Madigan have helped to make an asynchronous Monday into Funday Monday!  Last week, I was constantly interrupted from my full-time job to help recenter my girls. Today, they created their own "specials" plan and followed it easily from class to class, and it made focusing on the asynchronous work in the core subject areas this afternoon argument-free. And I was able to focus on my work as well. My second-grader loved thinking through and doing drawings for Reflections. She was upset when we had to pull her from origami five minutes early for a virtual doctor's appointment. She was so afraid she would miss something more. She had a blast going through and picking out the library books she wanted from the online database. She was  bummed that we missed getting her library books, but she will be patiently waiting for them next week. Thank you so much to Ms. Pomeroy and Ms. Madigan for really making her day. My fifth grader skipped out of her room when Chopper Time was finished and was talking nonstop about drama club while making lunch. And despite her only being one of two kids in chorus, it was a fantastic experience. She was so sad about missing out on "5th grade only" activities in her last year at NSES. Even just hearing about these really brightened her weekend. She loved today so much. Thank you, Ms. Metz and Mr. Kimball, for bringing a much needed sense of connection to her. All four of you have been amazing during our past five years at NSES. My kids love you all so much and have always enjoyed specials. The energy you have brought to the classroom each day has made their experience in school magical. Today made me appreciate all the work you have put into building a sense of community and continuity even more. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"

Alina Barela, Saratoga ES

"I want recognize Ms. Barela.  She is my daughter's first grade teacher at Saratoga this school year. Ms. Barela is a caring, loving, fun and patient teacher.  She is exactly what my student needs. Ms. Barela goes above and beyond, especially during this unknown times in virtual learning. My daughter needed to get an assessment done this month and Ms. Barela was so flexible to those working parents and made a few late evening slots so we can schedule the assessments during this time and be there while she is taking this assessment. As a parent, I appreciated this, we know this is not her "regular working hours" but Ms. Barela made the effort and time to make it work for our family and she also sent us a quick text reminding us about this meeting. Ms. Barela, we are very blessed to have you as our daughter's first grade teacher as well as Saratoga having you as an incredible teacher. Thank you for all you do daily for our students during these uncertain times. We appreciate YOU!"

Dorothy Walsh, Weyanoke ES

Dorothy Walsh has been a superstar part of our office staff team throughout the Spring and now as we have re-opened for virtual instruction.  In addition to the ‘usual’ office duties such as answering the phone, helping with technology distribution, managing supply distribution, and assisting with student registration, she has become the true ‘Face’ of Weyanoke.  Most recently, a newly registered student was having trouble logging into his computer, and called the school several times looking for help as Ms. Walsh was answering calls from home.  After working to help him over the phone without success, she realized that this student lived right across the street. She offered to assist the student from the parking lot of his apartment. The student brought his laptop down to the parking lot, and with Ms. Walsh’s assistance, was finally able to log in to his virtual classroom and participate in the virtual instruction with his class.  We are very fortunate to have Ms. Walsh going above and beyond to support our students!

Meghan Buckles, Sangster ES

"Ms. Buckles was an amazing teacher throughout the entire 2019-20 school year.  She showed my daughter so much love and attention and truly cared about each of her students.  She was especially caring with my daughter after a difficult family situation and provided support and feedback.  When it became necessary to move to remote learning in the spring of 2020, Ms. Buckles was amazing.  In speaking with other parents whose kids had different teachers, it was apparent that Ms. Buckles went above and beyond to keep her students engaged and made sure her students' parents were as informed as possible about each step of the process.  I am so grateful that she was my daughter's teacher and wish her the best in her future teaching."

Ken Wheeler, Keene Mill ES

"My son is in Mr. Wheeler's 4th grade AAP class.  Mr. Wheeler has been wonderful working with all the students in his class.  I had my son leave his headset off so I could hear the class during the first week of virtual learning.  The first few days Mr. Wheeler was very patient with the students trying to get their questions answered and help them with navigating the google classroom and signing into different specials/access links.  He was very professional and made the effort to make sure all the students were ready and understood what to do.  He was always very prompt in getting my questions answered via emails.  Before the class starts, he allows the students to chat among themselves and build relationship but also set rules.  He made sure bullying was not allowed but did it in a way that students understand and are respectful to each other.  My son enjoys being in Mr. Wheeler's class and looks forward to school every day even though it is virtual learning."

Colleen Eddy, Willow Oaks

With Constitution Day approaching at Lake Braddock and across the nation, we reached out to Colleen to help guide us through some potentially rough waters given the climate in the country.  Within hours, Colleen sent over a variety of resources as well as offered her own insight on how to go about navigate conversations.  Because she is incredible, she followed up a couple of days later with yet another resource. While the situation above is the most recent example, Colleen has steadily been an invaluable resource for Lake Braddock.  Her rapid response rate while providing amazing guidance and resources is, quite frankly, unmatched in what we have experienced.  At the beginning of the pandemic last year she even offered a modified Professional Learning experience catered specifically to the needs of our admin team.  We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to have Colleen as a resource and honorary Bruin.

Melinda Lopez,  Sprague Technology Center

We are SBTS working at two Title I elementary schools and sharing one incredible Technology Support Specialist (TSSpec). Melinda Lopez has worked far beyond her regular days and hours to make sure that EVERY student and staff member at BOTH of our schools has access to reliable technology. This work has included preparing and organizing over 1200 devices for families, many of whom have never used a computer before. This year, reliable access to technology is more important than ever, and she has been the key to making that possible in our schools. She has been working nights and weekends to ensure both of her schools are ready for virtual learning. Last weekend, she came into our schools on Saturday and Sunday to get computers ready for new students, and to help a new teacher when her computer stopped working. She will stop at nothing to help the staff and students at each school have what they need for success. Melinda answers text messages and emails without hesitation to offer support. She contributes to the school culture by helping students, too, when they need help. Somehow, despite her enormous workload, she is always friendly and patient. On behalf of our schools, we would like to express our enormous appreciation for Melinda. She is a true hero for our communities!

David Wickham, Lake Braddock SS

"David took the time before school started to call every single one of his students and families to introduce himself and start building a relationship with them. In addition, David used his entire Monday to hold individual "mini-conferences" with every single one of his students. This means that by the conclusion of their fist full week of school, Mr. Wickham's students had 2 personal, individual conversations with him. David knows the how powerful a strong student/teacher relationship can be and, especially this year, being proactive about creating it is going to be key to our student's success. Establishing this relationship now will benefit the students today and all year long as they know there is already an adult who cares about them."

Joe Houston, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Each summer the Department of Human Resources queries supervisor structure information from Lawson and sends each principal an e-mail a request to review the information on a spreadsheet to ensure that evaluation and leave approvals are being routed to the correct supervisor.  Upon receipt of the updated spreadsheet, the changes were then made manually in Lawson. With the launch of MyPDE, the requests for school-based supervisor structure changes was quite frankly overwhelming.  Joe Houston created functionality on the organizational chart located in Uconnect that allows the principal and/or their administrative assistant to update the organizational structure.  In turn, the functionality creates a spreadsheet that can be used to push the data in to Lawson after review.  Prior to Joe creating the new functionality, updating one school would take approximately a little over an hour from start to finish to update their supervisor structure, now it takes about 15 minutes.  I truly appreciate Joe’s hard work on creating and fixing any issues that arise with the organizational chart functionality. I find I am a little less overwhelmed this summer!  Thank you, Joe!"

-------

Natalie Baumstark, Sprague Technology Center

"Natalie assisted the Department of Human Resources with creating a video tutorial that is being used to train school-based administrators and their administrative assistants on how to update their supervisor structures utilizing the organizational chart located in UConnect. While working on a tight deadline and learning about HR's business practices, Natalie provided extraordinary patience and professionalism during the entire process. Without Natalie's expertise and guidance, I would be struggling to train administrators on how to update their supervisor structures which impacts MyPDE and MyTime.  Thank you, Natalie!"

Now, I am lucky enough to have her as both my "buddy teacher" and a colleague on both of my CTs!  This is my first year back to teaching after a 6-year hiatus, at a new school, during a pandemic, and Katie has gone above and beyond to make me feel welcome and supported (from answering countless emails, exchanging many texts, and providing much emotional support). I truly could not have survived this transition back to full-time teaching without her. Katie truly embodies the best parts of the Seahawk family!"

"My daughter is new to Silverbrook Elementary this year after unexpectedly having to leave a school she loved.  Although we are in a virtual environment, Ms. McGovern has done an amazing job making my daughter feel welcome.  She has delivered hand written notes to our home, made my daughter a special birthday card, and met with her individually on Google Meet before school started. She has definitely made her feel special.  Throughout each day, Ms. McGovern ensures that every student's name is called multiple times so that they feel "seen."  We are so appreciative of Ms. McGovern's effort to make virtual learning work for every student."

Ryan Richardson, Franklin MS

"As an school-based technology specialist, Ryan is tasked with wearing many hats. During a summer of much uncertainty with virtual learning and preparing students and staff for a situation that none of us has experienced before, he has impressed me with how much he has done to stay ahead of schedule. He created an amazing site for current Franklin students to access that gets them acquainted with their return to school information, their teachers, and their admin. While spending countless hours setting up accounts, troubleshooting computers, and distributing laptops at his school, Ryan was able to create an incredible 2020-21 public-facing Hub on the Franklin Middle School website. While other middle schools have and continue to do the same, Ryan’s was done two weeks before the first day of school. Not only did it give confidence to the public that Franklin MS had a plan for 2020-21, his “Return to School” page and his “Virtual Learning” page were created for two unique audiences. The “Return to School” page was mostly for parents and provided a public-facing spot for parents (as well as students, staff, and other members of the community) to have access to what they needed most (return to school forms, attendance procedures, bell schedule, orientation video, and more). His “Virtual Learning” page was designed with students in mind. This is for the students to have as one of their startup pages during each day of virtual learning. It has pages like the bell schedule, SIS, links to common digital platforms, and tech support. I was particularly impressed with his “Tech Support” page. It is a page that will continue to accumulate content over the year as he receives various questions related to troubleshooting a computer or the network, but it is extremely clean and is a tremendous starting spot for students and parents to figure out what might be wrong with their machine. This page alone could save many potential questions related to a computer or network problem. While other schools have emulated what Ryan has done with his “2020-21 hub”, he was the first middle school website administrator to have a finished product.
Through his many countless hours in determining the best fit for potential content that students and parents could see without having to log into anything, other schools were able to benefit by using his blueprint. From a school website perspective, no other middle school was able to show its community that it was ready for the 2020-21 school year as quickly as Ryan and Franklin MS were. Through my many interactions with him through this and other school website initiatives, Ryan has shown how important the school website is as a communications tool. Like all of the other times in a school year, Ryan has a beat on the Franklin MS community and knows how to communicate that, using the school website as a channel."

Ashley Kovachik, Woodson HS

"Three of my four children have been through Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and the fourth is a Senior at Woodson HS.  I also work for FCPS.  I preface this “Cares” with this information to point out I have a lot of experience with, and observances of, FCPS Employees. It is long overdue that I recognize School Counselor Ashley Kovachik as one of FCPS’s best!  As a school counselor, Ms. Kovachik has shown a unique ability to acknowledge the diversity of her assigned students and look out for their diverse needs. Because she has taken the time to know my son’s unique academic needs and interests, she has gone above and beyond. For example, she reached out to my son at home during COVID to point out a class he might be interested in and dual enrollment opportunities with Northern Virginia Community College. Thanks to Ms. Kovachik’s efforts my son has had a high school experience tailored to his interests and needs that include making his schedules over the years fit in five information technology Chantilly Academy classes versus the likelihood of two. These are just two examples, of many, in which she has looked out for my son of her own accord. Woodson HS has approximately 2,477 students and ten counselors. Thus, Ms. Kovachik has over 200 students to counsel, so the fact that she is looking out for my son is no small feat.  It is to be noted that I have left my son to advocate for himself, so it has meant a lot to observe Ms. Kovachik respond to him in kind over the years.  Part of FCPS’s strategic plan is a “Premier Workforce” and a “Caring Culture.”  Thank you, Ms. Kovachik, for being an exceptional employee and for caring about my son. Woodson HS and FCPS is a better workplace and workforce because of you."

Geri Zahreddine, Bull Run ES

"Geri Zahreddine completes her job with enthusiasm and continuous dedication to the Special Education program at Bull Run ES. Since the start of the pandemic, Geri has worked tirelessly to learn how to use and support the students in our virtual environment.  Geri took over 30 hours of various technology courses this summer so she could support our special education students and meet their needs by demonstrating short cuts and ways to organize all the needed information in an efficient manner. I have worked with her for 5 years and she starts every year by building relationships throughout the school and supporting as needed. She collaborates with colleagues and recently she took the lead and volunteered to establish a weekly informational meeting for instructional assistants to help build relationships and develop the necessary technology skills to be effective at their job. She answers any questions asked in a timely manner and if she does not know the answer, she seeks out support. Geri is an indispensable part of Bull Run Community and especially the Special Education Department."

Cathy Bowman, Hollin Meadows ES

"My daughter had a rough start to the school year.  She is very much a rule follower and needs to be able to take breaks when she gets overwhelmed or frustrated with the online platform.  However, she is afraid to do so because she does not want to get into trouble.  Despite Mrs. Bowman telling the class they could, my daughter needed more due to her anxiety.  Mrs. Bowman came to our home after class on the second day of school, and brought my daughter a flower and a handwritten postcard that not only puts into writing that she is allowed to take care of herself and walk away when she needs to, but also her secret cue to Mrs. Bowman that when she holds it up, she is taking a moment to take care of herself because she is feeling anxious and overwhelmed.  We greatly appreciated the care and sensitivity Mrs. Bowman put into doing this for our daughter.  It gave our daughter a sense of release and freedom to know she can take care of her emotions without the fear of punishment, and that her teacher cares about her and understands her concerns."

Somaya Thompson, Justice HS

"Dr. Thompson always asked about my cat Lamar. She helped me with cat caring techniques and even brought in wet food. After her planning period was no longer in my room, she always asked about my cat, "How is my little friend Lamar"? She would say. Then she would tell me her about her cat Lancelot. Dr, Thompson cares not only about people, but animals as well. She is truly the Jane Goodall of cats."

Emily Burrell, South Lakes HS

"Emily is one of the most genuine, collaborative, generous, thoughtful, and hard-working colleagues I’ve had the pleasure to work and learn alongside of. -------

Aimee Molina, Eagle View ES

"Throughout the first week of school, we experienced many challenges with children as well as with us as parents trying to help them.  With 1st graders in particular, I felt that the required pace of learning was rather swift. Some children grasped this well and others did not have latch onto the new medium as quickly.  Mrs. Molina was extraordinarily patient and caring with the children and extremely respectful when parents showed frustration also. Her compassionate teaching is truly the embodiment of that which I have come to appreciate most about Eagle View Elementary School."

Teresa Johnson, Hollin Meadows ES

"Ms. Johnson has just been amazing throughout this return to school experience. She has been doing a great job teaching content and connecting personally with the kids in her class. My daughter was panicking today due to the Verizon problems we were all experiencing, and I could hear Ms. Johnson patiently talking through tech issues with students on top of all the academic content she hoped to cover. I could barely keep my cool with two kids dealing with tech issues at home, but Ms. Johnson addressed all the kids in her class one by one (while also teaching). I'm so impressed."

-------

Alexandria Resch, Hollin Meadows ES

"My son is in Ms. Resch's class, and I can't usually listen in closely during his online learning (since I'm dealing with other kids at home and also working) but I had the chance to hover near him during a math lesson this afternoon. Ms. Resch did an amazing job leading the kids in an agree/disagree discussion about math. She is so encouraging, upbeat, and interested in the kids.  My son is focused and excited about school since starting this week. Ms. Resch is literally the light at the end of the tunnel for us since this pandemic started!"

- Maura Keaney, Kings Glen ES

-------

Elyssa Dunn and Beth Beavers, Kings Park ES

"Ms. Dunn and Mrs. Beavers helped their 2nd grade class adjust to internet difficulties today.  They were in the middle of a multi-step MyOn project, and connectivity was low for the class and there were so many questions. Both teachers answered each question with kindness (even when the questions were repeated and repeated again). On top of that, though, they emphasized that students could use this time to practice patience and grace with themselves, each other, their class and the world. You could hear the stress leave students as they remembered that  problems didn't mean they couldn't learn, and that bumps are not emergencies. Watching teachers build classroom culture around acceptance, kindness and peace is SO inspiring. We appreciate you!"

Bryan Buser, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Bryan Buser went above and beyond to support the virtual Great Beginnings Summer Institute this year with a collaborative, and responsive attitude. Because the event was virtual for the first time, Bryan created two websites, complete with comprehensive videos, information, and answers to questions for new hires. One focuses on Human Resources information GBSI 2020 Human Resources and the other on Vendor Information GBSI 2020 Vendor Resources. New teachers had access to these resources prior to the GBSI 2020 kickoff allowing them to use the information as a resource when meeting with vendors and departments online. Teachers appreciated the one-stop online virtual shop that they can also use throughout the year. Bryan made suggestions and communicated at all hours of the day and night during the development phase of the web pages. He updated information as it was being sent and dealt with hundreds of emails from me in addition to his regular work. Bryan is an amazing, positive, supportive, and committed co-worker. It is a pleasure to work with him on different projects throughout the year. Thank you Bryan for helping to make this virtual event a success!"

- Shelli Wayland, Gatehouse Administration Center

-------

Margery Sabolsky, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Margery Sabolsky was a huge help with the bag distribution portion of the virtual Great Beginnings Summer Institute. Even though GBSI 2020 was virtual this year, vendors had the option to provide items that new teachers would typically pick up when visiting them during the in-person event. Margery came into the office and worked with me to pack 1,300 bags. The bags were then separated by the number of teachers new to FCPS in each school, packaged, and shipped to the lead mentor at each school for distribution. Margery is a colleague who is collaborative, caring, and positive. Thank you, Margery, for working with me and beating the deadline. Another way that we were able to make this virtual event a success."

-------

Mark Hyer & Llexell Evangelista, Sprague Technology Center

"Mark and Llexell went above and beyond to assist me with HR information that needed to be printed and placed in the 2020 Great Beginnings Summer Institute bags that were sent to schools for distribution. They are two individuals who collaborate and builds relationships with everyone they meet. They are respectful, upbeat, caring, and always go above and beyond to make any situation or event like the Great Beginnings Summer Institute a total success. This program has multiple layers of logistics and this year because we were virtual, it added additional layers. This showcased the quality collaboration between multiple offices, and the superior work happening in FCPS. The Great Beginnings Virtual Summer Institute was an enriching, engaging experience for new teachers and reinforced that ordinary things create extraordinary results! Thank you both for making my role in the process a little easier."

Michele Cross, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Michele Cross was instrumental in assisting with the Human Resource virtual portion of the Great Beginnings Summer Institute. Prior to Bryan creating and posting virtual pages for the event, Michele proofed web page content, listened to videos for content and flow, checked links, and much, much more. Michele also developed the google doc that new teachers used for HR questions. She worked late to create a spreadsheet that HR staff used to speak live with the new teachers to answer their questions. She monitored and updated the spreadsheet the entire day HR staff was calling new teachers and kept everyone in the loop. She is a colleague who knows how to create a caring culture while building positive relationships. Thank you, Michele, for working with me and Bryan and for helping to make this virtual event a huge success."

Alicia Giusti, Lake Braddock SS

"Alicia Giusti is so much more than an instructional assistant at Lake Braddock. She is a mentor to her peers, a technology guru to the teachers, an advocate for her students and a support for their parents. Alicia independently set up a meeting time to support/welcome the IA's with distance learning. She has taken new IA's under her wing assisting them with setting up schedules and accessing technology. She has a strong grasp of multiple aspects of technology and willingly shares and supports teachers with her knowledge. In addition Alicia has supported students and parents by creating google documents to access their BBCU links. She even volunteered over the summer supporting her students from the previous year with maintaining their math skills. Alicia Giusti is not just an Instructional Assistance at LBSS she is the Ultimate Professional."

Aimee Molina, Eagle View ES

In these critical first days of school, I am excited that my child has Mrs. Molina for first grade; I could not have asked for a better teacher. I'm sure the whole first grade team is doing similar lessons, but I can only share what Mrs. Molina is doing. Mrs. Molina's voice is calming and reassuring while she explains things to her students. She takes the time to answer any and all questions, even from adults, during class. She expertly transitions from whole group lessons to independent lessons while explaining to first graders, who are not physically sitting near her, what they will be doing. She weaves in the basic "how to" skills that students need to know so that they can complete their independent lessons. Thank you Mrs. Molina! This is going to be an excellent school year!

Anthony Pikul, Woodley Hills ES

I don't think anyone doubts that kindergarten teachers are miracle workers. Teaching kindergarten virtually is a challenge I know they never thought they'd have to work through. My son is in Mr. Pikul's kindergarten class this year. My child needs a lot of support with transitions and starting new things. I'm so impressed by the support Mr. Pikul provided to his students and families getting ready to start this year virtually. He set up one-on-one conferences with families to meet each child. During our session, he spoke directly to my child and was able to get him excited about the year. Later that week, Mr. Pikul organized small group "play dates" with no more than four students to provide them an opportunity to see each other and practice using BBCU tools before the first day of school. Everyday after that play date, my son asked "when is it time for me to meet all of my new friends?" I was very nervous about how starting kindergarten virtually was going to look and Mr. Pikul provided meaningful opportunities for my child to feel connected and excited about this very strange time.

Mackenzie Hays, Woodley Hills ES

"My son is in Ms. Hays' second grade class this year. He was very nervous about starting the year virtually. Ms. Hays has done an amazing job of connecting with the students in her classroom before the school year started. My son was still nervous about the school year but I know he was also excited after he had the chance to talk to Ms. Hays. Ms. Hays also made it so easy for families to connect with her through a variety of ways (email, text, class dojo texting) and provided detailed instructions, including a video, explaining how to get to her classroom link. I'm so excited that my child is in Ms. Hays' class this year."

During this kickoff and its major emphasis on professional development at the county and school levels, Ms. Brechwald has been instrumental in synthesizing the requirements and recommendations and built a streamlined document with other coaches to help staff members navigate their professional responsibilities. She has stayed three steps ahead of our staff, becoming well-informed of all the opportunities, attending and soaking up the information from all the sessions, and building on her vast foundation of best practices to better support our staff as they process all the content for the benefit of students. Along with our reading teacher, technology specialist, and principal (who all deserve kudos as well), she has designed and implemented a comprehensive PD plan at the school level. This plan goes beyond the normal school kickoff PD to include additional processing sessions that allow our staff to take what they have learned from county PD and transfer this knowledge into their current virtual learning plan for students. Ms. Brechwald is talented, intelligent, swift in her actions, and amazingly humble. She is one of the most positive people I know. She is patient and helpful with our newest staff members (and me!). She is a "master" at master schedules. She is the ultimate professional. And most of important, she does it all because she loves helping every child by keeping the main thing, the main thing!
