"Brad Hollis and his team have delivered over 21 pallets of new clothing that was donated to our office from National Center for Children and Families. His team took the time to mix the boxes of clothing so Title 1 schools were able to receive a variety of new clothing to disperse to students and families at their family markets.  I am most appreciated of Brad and his team for going the extra mile to break down the clothing pallets and mix them up so each school community was able to benefit from various clothing and sizes from NCCF's generous donation."

"As I was going through a very challenging personal situation when my father was critically ill back in India, Nick took care of my classes in addition to his own classes.  He made lesson plans for my classes and was teaching both his classes and my classes. This helped me at least not to worry about my work for the 1 1/2 weeks that I was not in school while I was coping with this situation at home.  Thank you Nick for being a great teammate and I appreciate all the support!"

"As I was going through a very challenging personal situation when my father was critically ill back in India, Dr. P took care of my AP chemistry classes in addition to her own classes. She was teaching both her classes and my AP Chem classes.  Additionally, She stayed after school in BBCU Links to explain difficult concepts to the students who came for after-school support. This helped me at least not to worry about my work for the 1 1/2 weeks that I was not in school while I was coping with this situation at home.  Thank you, Dr. P  for being a great teammate and I appreciate all the support!"

Region 2:  Joshua Floyd, Glasgow MS

"My daughter had started to feel pretty anxious about her history class because of the reading level of the handouts that were required reading.  She was feeling deflated and overwhelmed.  I reached out to her teacher, Mr. Floyd and the counselor concerned that the class may be a little more that she could handle.   Right away Mr. Floyd stepped in and offered to read the articles with her and help her get through them.  She had a meeting schedule with him during his office hours, needless to say she was very nervous for the meeting, she had an upset stomach, was sweaty and wanted to avoid the meeting.  As the meeting progressed, she became more comfortable with reading and giving her opinion.  I was so impressed with the level of patience Mr. Floyd had with her, his encouragement and telling her he believed in her. After the meeting was over, she was glowing and had a really big smile on her face.  She said to me "I think I just grew 20 new brain cells"!!  You have no idea how happy that made me, coming from her.  She had a whole new confidence and pride in knowing that she was able to understand what she read and was able to put her thoughts and opinions into words and share them in post. Though Mr. Floyd went above and beyond and spent close to 2 hours with her, not once did he make her feel rushed.  After her post, she stayed on the computer and extra hour, reading others posts and making comments out loud either agreeing or disagreeing with the comments she was reading. Thank you again Mr. Floyd for all you do and for being such an encouraging and patient teacher.  I want you know that you are making a difference with my daughter."

Region 3: Angela Perez, Whitman MS

"Today Mrs. Perez observed a student who was communicating a lot of sad emotions through the chat feature on BBCU.   Although we are only five weeks into the school year, Mrs. Perez has taken a lot of time to build positive relationships with her students, and for this particular student (who does not easily share personal information) she found out that the family was experiencing a significant medical crisis and needed food for the weekend.  Mrs. Perez immediately followed up with the parent, school social worker, and decided to purchase (out of pocket) and deliver groceries to the student’s house. Thank you for being kind and always putting your students first, Mrs. Perez!"

Region 4:  Kristy Carballo, Robinson SS 

From a parent:  "One of my daughter's teachers, Mrs. Carballo, has been fantastic! I contacted her a couple of times when my daughter had a panic attack during her class to explain why my daughter did poorly on a quiz and another time. Both times, Mrs. Carballo was so kind and gentle. Also, with the kiddos on the first day of school - it was my daughter's first class and she was so nervous and was shaking - but when Mrs. Carballo started class with games and get-to-know-you activities and had them choose a motivational quote, I was blown away! My daughter started smiling and even giggled at one point 😊. I want her to know how incredible she made my daughter's first experience, who even said, “Wait mom - I think I can do this!”  She is amazing and she ought to know it- I know she’s working on her masters she said in online education ironically.  She couldn’t be more well-suited for the task!  I’ve told her she has definitely found her calling and that she is clearly following the calling she was designed for- her students (and their families) are so very lucky to have her!"

Region 5:  Emily Tobin and Michelle McCoy, Deer Park ES

"Recently, the Deer Park community suffered a tragedy. We lost the mom of one of our students unexpectedly. Immediately, Emily and Michelle contacted the family to check on the student. They scheduled a time to visit him in person later that day. Emily and Michelle talked with the family to determine what supports they might need. They then set up a schedule for staff to make meals for the family. Additionally, they created a schedule for lunch bunch meetings with the student and other staff members. Their swift response, kind hearts and caring attitude helped this family feel loved, valued and supported during a terrible time."

He has gone out into the community for engagement visits and his persistence is so needed and so appreciated. She makes sure that students AND their parents know she is there for them. We appreciate the level of communication we receive from her. She keeps students engaged through the long hours online. She is organized and her organization is helping my student to become organized as well. "Derek is a compassionate person who always goes above and beyond to make your interaction with him collaborative. Yesterday morning, I had to pick up an order from the TMPC Center in the pouring rain. I sent an email letting him know I was on my way and when I pulled up, he met me outside with a huge umbrella and escorted me inside. When I was ready to leave, he grabbed his umbrella and walked me back out in the pouring down rain to my car. Derek is a kind, caring, customer service friendly employee who always makes the customer his number one priority. Thank you, Derek!"

"Tracey Phillips is a kind, caring, collaborative, and helpful, individual. I sent her an email at 2:40 pm on Tuesday, October 21 with the subject of "Question/Request". She responded within a minute “with no problem, when would you like to pick them up?” During this busy time, with principals being pulled in 100 different directions, Tracey took time out of her day to accommodate my request. When I arrived at the school to pick up the items, the items were waiting for me by the front door. The contactless pickup was quick and easy. Tracey went above and beyond to assist me for an event that isn't in her pyramid or region. The COVID compliant event on November 9 will be even more special because of Tracey and Robinson Secondary's kind and caring culture."

This is my first year taking AP classes and I was really nervous about how it would go. Now that it's almost the end of the first quarter I'm not worried at all. Mrs. Goble is an amazing teacher and does such a good job explaining the material in an engaging and clear way. Mrs. Goble just has such good energy and she's so encouraging and understanding and really puts in the effort to make sure we have a good understanding of the concepts but doesn't give us an overwhelming amount of work. She's such a good teacher and I appreciate everything she does for us!

"This was emailed to our office from a parent and we wanted to ensure Silke was recognized:  'I just had to send a quick note. I live over by Cherry Run off Wilmington Dr. My kids were on bikes and I was probably a block behind them because of our puppy. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. Both my kids were on either side of Wilmington. When I got closer I told my son to cross Wilmington to his sister. Then I saw what was going on. One of your amazing drivers had stopped on Burke Lake because they saw my kids and was trying to protect them. Honestly I couldn’t get over that the bus driver had stopped to check on my kids, let my kids pass and was watching over them until I got there. She was waiting till she knew they were safe. I waved and with a happy heart was so impressed. This meant so much to me while my kids aren’t in school your drivers are still taking care of our kids.,"

"Ms. Jankovich is the acting principal at Sangster Elementary in an almost impossible year with no way to make everyone happy, she goes out of her way to communicate with the parent community and responds to emails at all hours of the day and night with compassion and kindness.  As a parent, I know it is impossible to make everyone happy and as a teacher myself, I know just how hard it is going to be to adjust student schedules and teach in this new model.  I'm so impressed that Ms. Jankovich continues to include both parents and teachers in conversations about supporting students.  Every email she sends shows her passion as an educator, how much she cares for every student at Sangster, and how much she supports and believes in her teachers. "Susan is conscientious, thorough, and reliable, and she regularly goes above and beyond her role as Assessment Coach.  During item collection events in Spring and Summer, she created and maintained a database to keep track of student obligations, and she emailed each individual student to inform them of their respective fines/owed materials.  She also sent students their login information for Freshman Orientation and served as the point of contact for all questions relating to both of these events.  Furthermore, Susan has been instrumental in the professional development and support for teachers regarding Schoology and she is a key member of our MTSS team. In the summer, she used data from the 19-20 school year to identify students who would potentially struggle with distance learning this year, and then she led an initiative to survey their parents so we could anticipate their students' struggles and begin to develop resources to support them.  She is always willing to support the collection, analysis, and synthesis of data, and prior to our weekly kid talks, she provides each MTSS team member with data to help us identify areas of concern.  She has also supported the SPED department by spending countless hours to streamline the communication process for case managers as it relates to progress monitoring.  All of this is in addition to planning and ensuring a safe and secure testing environment for all standardized tests, including the SAT and PSAT."

"Music class tends to be one of the under appreciated classes, yet very important classes, in grade school.  Mr. Welfle has always been a popular and fun teacher among the students, but I never really understood why until I have had the privilege of observing his classes through virtual learning. Mr. Welfle not only teaches the students important foundations in music such as instruments, notes, and beats but he is opening their worlds to various musical styles and genres. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, he is hilarious and has the students so engaged in his classes with his creativity, sense of humor, encouragement and knowledge.  He makes them want to understand and like music.  It is like a half hour comedy show where the kids (and now parents) can walk away with new musical knowledge and songs!  He is so fantastic!"

"Mr. Fannon has great rapport with the students at Stratford Landing Elementary!  He teaches P.E. classes and he comes up with creative ways to get children moving!  He has developed a relationship by touching upon many different interests within our school community through his fun facts in the morning news segments such as his Pokemon cards of the day or his fun sports facts. I would say P.E. is a difficult class to translate into the virtual setting, however, Mr. Fannon adds games like racing around to find different items in your house, obstacle courses with objects in your home, or different static workouts with a timer and music to keep it fun!  During the break times in between exercises, he fills those moments with interactive quizzes or polls to  keep the students engaged that have health facts to discuss regarding nutrition, health, sleep, and exercise at their age.  My children find Mr. Fannon to be enthusiastic and funny and they look forward to their class time with him each week.  Mr. Fannon uses his tech savvy skills to make his classes more engaging.  He is a great person and he genuinely cares about his students and it shines through his dedication in teaching!"

"On top of all the other duties, MONICA HARRISON took the time to call me twice yesterday afternoon and early evening to answer my many questions regarding COVID leave and other types of leave.  At one point I needed to stop the conversation to take care of a personal matter at home, but she kept to her word and called me back in a timely manner.   I know how busy HR must
be with COVID matters and questions coming in all directions, on top of all the regular questions and concerns employees have.  The never-ending, overwhelming number of requests must be stressful, but Monica happily took the time to help me and did not rush my questions or concerns. Thank you so much MONICA HARRISON for giving me guidance so that I may better understand the processes and protocols this year, and in general.  She is knowledgeable and so very pleasant, personable, patient, understanding, and friendly!   She truly cares and goes above and beyond in order to help our employees and explain things clearly and concisely.  Monica even emailed me later to offer her assistance for any other concerns or questions I may have.  Thank you!"

The whole Quander team clearly goes out of their way to make success a possibility for their kids!  So glad to be collaborating with them!"

"Thursday afternoon, I sent emails to Kat and Emily. I asked if they could possibly fill out a form for a student they had in their respective classes last year, that he really needed for a doctor's appointment. They both responded in the affirmative and asked when I needed the form. I told them, "tonight or early tomorrow morning".  At 9:00 that evening and 7:30 the following morning, I was picking up the completed forms.  Their completed forms led to a student being found eligible for services that allow him to remain in the support classes he needs to graduate this year. Kat and Emily are helping kids who aren't even in their classes anymore. So grateful."

This week, a diverse group of staff at LB got together and presented a Parent Coffee in entirely in Spanish. It was well organized, interactive, and well attended!  Great job, team!!!"

"Ms. Dacey has had a wonderful influence on the 6th graders at Stratford Landing Elementary School.  She teaches math and she comes up with unique projects to make the math fun and applicable.  In one particular assignment, "Make the Dream Team," students put themselves in the shoes of a coach and look at the stats of players in terms of fractions, decimals, and percentages to determine which players you may put on the team.  The lesson provides an interesting way to make comparisons.  The students are dealing with consumer math right now and they calculate discounts and tips and this particular subject itself can be directly applicable to the students as consumers and helping to make wise decisions in the real world.  Ms. Dacey also has daily check-ins that give the students an opportunity to review while also encouraging participation and engagement among each student.  In the midst of so much change this year, Ms. Dacey has made her expectations clear as a strong communicator, she has been adaptable to the new virtual learning system this year and patiently helped students through the process. We are very fortunate to have her teaching talents at Stratford Landing Elementary!"

"Michael Keryeski, also known as Mr. K, is a P.E. teacher at Ravensworth. He often encourages his students to send him the dates, times, and locations of their sports games so that he can go watch them play. On October 13, Mr. K. came to my twin boys' baseball game because they and a few other students from our team and the opposing team asked him to come. He sat with us in the bleachers and watched the ENTIRE game, cheering loudly for each of his students and praising them every time they tried their best. He even took photos (masked and socially distanced) with some of the students after the game. I cannot describe how excited my boys and the other kids were to have Mr. K there. Not only did it encourage them to try harder to do their best, but it made them feel like their teacher really cared about them. My boys talked about it for days afterward. And during the game, Mr. K told us about many other sports games he'd attended. He said he always tries his hardest to attend games when students invite him. What an incredible, caring teacher!"

The transition to third grade and a new teacher in a virtual learning environment has been hard on my daughter. She loves to form relationships with her teachers and that's been much harder for her to do this year with not being able to turn cameras on during class.  However, I knew that spending some time with Mrs. Park would go a long way in helping her out. Though she is no longer my daughter's teacher, Mrs. Park has graciously offered her time to spend 30 minutes having a video chat with my daughter. As a teacher she is able to reach her and talk to her about school in a way that I'll never be able to. Even with a new class and three kids of her own at home, Mrs. Park is so giving of herself and her time and it does not go unnoticed. Nicole Taragna, Rolling Valley ES

Ms. Taragna is my daughter's 3rd-grade general education teacher.  My daughter spends part of the school day in her classroom, and part of the day in a self-contained special education setting.  On Friday, October 23rd, the special education classes were all asynchronous for the day as teachers needed to prepare for cohorts entering the building next week. Asynchronous time is difficult for my daughter, so we instead chose to spend the full day in the general education classroom. Even with no notice, Ms. Taragna did not miss a beat! She fully included my daughter throughout the entire day, even during subjects where my daughter is typically in the special education classroom.  

My daughter has complex communication needs, and often gets frustrated, usually for one of two reasons: 1. she either knows the material she's being presented and her communication needs make it difficult to express her knowledge or 2. She doesn't know or understand something, but feels like she should, so shuts down entirely. It never happened on Friday.  

Despite being challenged with so much new information; despite having less frequent breaks; and even knowing she was not feeling well (ear pain) - she had an amazing day! She was fully engaged throughout the day, and was excited to participate in the same assignments as her general education peers.

Ms. Taragna took so many small steps that all added up to such a productive and positive experience:

1. She took the time to include my daughter in rotation assignments on slides before publishing them to the class.  

2. She privately messaged us links to assignments that my daughter didn't have access to in Schoology.

3. She opened up private message options so we could talk through concerns and questions without having to make the entire class aware (which helps significantly with my daughter's anxiety, as she does not want to be seen as different).

4. She calls on my daughter for answers, and models every day being patient with my daughter using her AAC device to respond.  Even though it may mean "dead air" for longer periods of time than other students, she knows my daughter is working as fast as she can and gives her space to answer without rushing her.  

I can't say enough how huge this is! My daughter ended the week with filling out Ms. Taragna's weekly check-in. For the past few weeks, my daughter has been telling her she is "sleepy" and "I want go to your class more. I want learn more. Please help me."  On October 23rd, after spending a full day with Ms. Taragna, she said she was "Happy" (rather than sleepy) and "I love your class. Thanks for including me!" The difference in my daughter at the end of a full day of general education - and being genuinely included - was tremendous. Thank you, Ms. Taragna!  We love you!

He is a master technology sleuth but even more important to us all, his genuine warmth and kindness bring calm to us all in these uncertain times.

After providing the email of my observation, she offered a phone conversation as a better venue. I first responded via email that I'd try to do better and still felt miserable.  So, I eventually took her up on the offer and I'm glad I did. Here's the email outcome that I just forwarded to her: I meant what I said in you being there for "me" as a person today.  It has been very, very difficult to go from my perceived "swag", "autonomy", and "efficacy", to self-doubt, uncertainty and frustration that this distance-learning format has brought on.  I had no idea how very thinly veiled one can be as a person and hence, how easily a perception window can change. "Ms. Stephanie Payne has been a wonderful influence on our students!  She has developed lessons in Language Arts that develops our students as writers and encourages them to attempt new ideas.  They just finished a PBL (Project-Based Learning) that focused on developing a resort on a different planet.  She encouraged the students to do their research from a scientific perspective while also giving them the creative outlet to consider what could be possible!  I love the opportunity they have had to imagine and consider what could be possible in their writing.  She also has given students the opportunity write a historical fiction piece.  She has encouraged them to consider a time in history and touch upon events that actually happened while giving them the creative license to develop a character that could have lived during that time and to consider what their life and experiences may have included.  She is clear with her assignments and expectations and also has given children a chance to play and be social in the virtual setting.  At morning meetings, she has taken a poll of their favorite songs to include the 10 minutes prior to school, she plays drawing games with them to get them started on a fun note, she asks students questions and then quizzes them the next day to see how well they are "getting to know" their classmates.  She is a teacher and a mother and she recognizes the challenges that students face this year and has worked hard to develop a sense of belonging even though the students are not physically together.  We are very fortunate to have her teaching expertise and her caring ways of reaching out to students in a fun way at Stratford Landing Elementary!"

"Mr. Bertholet has had a tremendously influential role on our 6th graders at Stratford Landing Elementary.  His gentle and courteous demeanor has been a living example of how to demonstrate civility with those around you.  He signs all of his emails to parents or students "with the kindest of regards" and genuinely shows gratitude in class towards the sharing of ideas among students.  He tailors his historical lessons to make them both educational experiences while also giving students the opportunity to see how a historical moment may have been experienced differently by many people at the time.  While teaching about the founding fathers, he encouraged students to think about what else was going on in the world during that time, and how it affected the decisions that led to the forming of our Constitution.  He also tied in lessons on what was going on with the Native Americans at the time and how their lives were being changed.  He takes thought provoking articles and emboldens the students to consider what the author was experiencing at the time.  Our students will look at science and social studies with greater sensibility from the thoughtfully prepared lessons Mr. Bertholet has developed.  We are very fortunate to have Mr. Bertholet at Stratford Landing."

"Kayla Briggs is not just a teacher she is a so much more! My son was lucky enough to have Ms. Briggs in first grade. It is an understatement to say learning to read was a bit frustrating for him. Ms. Briggs calm and cool attitude gave him the confidence to push on and overcome his fears and frustrations.  During second grade it was the highlight of my son’s day if he saw Ms. Briggs in the hallway or cafeteria. She always checked on his progress and made him feel special and supported. She is such a big part of the Fox Mill school community! She participates  in spirit events including dressing up, playing in basketball games, dine for dollars and so much more. Then life went virtual. My son felt lost without his community and school connections. In August we received “the call “ Ms. Briggs would be his teacher again in third grade.  If I am being honest, I began to cry, my worries reduced and my heart filled with joy for my son. When I told him he had Ms. Briggs again he said “Mommy, I can do virtual learning if I have Ms. Briggs because she really gets me!” Out of the mouth of an 8-year-old boy that’s about the best praise ever!  What a feeling to know your child feels understood even in a virtual environment. She started the year by visiting all her students with supplies and an outside 10 feet meet and greet. Ms. Briggs personal touches and commitment to her students makes her students feel so valued. She is connected to each of her kiddos even when she is on a screen! I can not praise Ms. Briggs and her commitment to overall student growth enough! Simply put she cares and it shows!"

Leslie graciously gave up hours of her personal time to help the librarians of a high school develop a virtual breakout for their entire freshman class orientation to the library (through 21 classes!) Leslie has worked for years with her own students on the Poplar Tree Paw Tech Squad as well as with teachers on various grade levels to develop virtual breakouts. When the librarians asked if she had any resources to share, she immediately provided multiple resources (including sharing access to many of her own breakouts), additional contacts, and also offered to meet virtually if needed. She then spent over an hour in a virtual meeting, helping the librarians think through their breakout goals and puzzles, offering a wide range of resources, and teaching them how to use various technology components to accomplish puzzles and locks.  And when the librarians needed help refining during the final hours of the evening before the breakout, she jumped on the Google Site virtually to offer real-time support and solutions. Leslie is generous and giving of her time, and she is genuinely invested in working hard to provide the best experiences for FCPS students, even students who don't attend her school and whom she will never meet!

"On Monday 10/19, Poplar Tree E.S. had a large student supply distribution event that was quite complex due to the various types of items that needed to be distributed to specific students. We were concerned that anyone assisting would be overwhelmed but those fears were quickly laid to rest as the team of 11 bus drivers and attendants arrived excited and enthusiastic to work. They paid close attention to the complicated directions and jumped right in when the first cars appeared. The cars were directed  with energy and professionalism. The interactions with families were friendly and thorough. The teams functioned as if they always work together and had done this before. We are so grateful for their help in making our event fun and successful."

"Recently, the Deer Park community suffered a tragedy. We lost the mom of one of our students unexpectedly. Immediately, Emily and Michelle contacted the family to check on the student. They scheduled a time to visit him in person later that day. Emily and Michelle talked with the family to determine what supports they might need. They then set up a schedule for staff to make meals for the family. Additionally, they created a schedule for lunch bunch meetings with the student and other staff members. Their swift response, kind hearts and caring attitude helped this family feel loved, valued and supported during a terrible time."

"My daughter had started to feel pretty anxious about her history class because of the reading level of the handouts that were required reading.  She was feeling deflated and overwhelmed.  I reached out to her teacher, Mr. Floyd and the counselor concerned that the class may be a little more that she could handle.   Right away Mr. Floyd stepped in and offered to read the articles with her and help her get through them. She had a meeting schedule with him during his office hours, needless to say she was very nervous for the meeting, she had an upset stomach, was sweaty and wanted to avoid the meeting.  As the meeting progressed, she became more comfortable with reading and giving her opinion.  I was so impressed with the level of patience Mr. Floyd had with her, his encouragement and telling her he believed in her. After the meeting was over, she was glowing and had a really big smile on her face.  She said to me "I think I just grew 20 new brain cells"!!  You have no idea how happy that made me, coming from her.  She had a whole new confidence and pride in knowing that she was able to understand what she read and was able to put her thoughts and opinions into words and share them in post. Though Mr. Floyd went above and beyond and spent close to 2 hours with her, not once did he make her feel rushed.  After her post, she stayed on the computer and extra hour, reading others posts and making comments out loud either agreeing or disagreeing with the comments she was reading. Thank you again Mr. Floyd for all you do and for being such an encouraging and patient teacher.  I want you know that you are making a difference with my daughter."

"Today Mrs. Perez observed a student who was communicating a lot of sad emotions through the chat feature on BBCU.   Although we are only five weeks into the school year, Mrs. Perez has taken a lot of time to build positive relationships with her students, and for this particular student (who does not easily share personal information) she found out that the family was experiencing a significant medical crisis and needed food for the weekend.  Mrs. Perez immediately followed up with the parent, school social worker, and decided to purchase (out of pocket) and deliver groceries to the student’s house. Since they are not able to see them in person because of distance learning the viewing from a computer screen is limited at best. With the help of several people, Tim Harazin, Sean Chitsaz, Michael Greene, Amie Jenkins, and Salima Hassouni I was able to get a microscope camera for my class and the software that I didn't have was uploaded within the hour! Thanks so much for the collaborative effort of all these FCPS employees for going above and beyond to bring our ants up close and personal. Special thanks to Tim Harazin for setting up an amazing web cam for his ant farm and YouTube videos to share footage for those that may not have been able to get their ant farm going this year! Last but certainly not least, the tech support staff at our school is amazing! "The HR Wellness team would like to recognize these team members in "Driving Force Behind Education" for their assistance in the drive-thru flu clinic held at Stonecroft. Over 80 flu shots were provided to transportation employees in just over two hours. With only one nurse providing the shots, our line was growing as the clinic progressed. These wonderfully multi-talented individuals were able to assess the situation and provide an alternative route for drivers arriving so that we did not block traffic on Stonecroft Blvd. With their guidance and quick thinking we were able to handle the large turnout and even entertain those waiting to receive their vaccine. It was my pleasure to work with my transportation family for this event and I am truly grateful for their grace and professionalism. Thank you for all you do!!!"

"I wanted to take a moment to recognize Maggie Stem and Sophia Scanlan for the great job they are doing working with fifth graders at Ravensworth. A fitting recent example is that my daughter was expressing a lot of frustration and was saying that she was very stressed by virtual learning and both teachers were very supportive of her concerns and took the time to talk to her. Ms. Stem also went above and beyond by immediately asking my daughter if she would like to have a lunch bunch the very next day and said she could invite some friends to join her. This was a very welcome development and it allowed my daughter to happily reconnect with two friends whom she was sad were no longer in her class. Ms. Stem also made it a point to tell my daughter that she would check in on her and meet with her regularly to see how things were going. Ms. Stem and Ms. Scanlan have worked hard to create a caring environment in their classroom and this has gone a long way I think toward helping the children to adjust to a virtual learning environment. She has always gone above and beyond for him and we cannot adequately express how thankful we are for her. Our son thinks the world of her and she makes him feel cared for. "Lichele is the School-Based Technology Specialist at Lorton Station Elementary School and I just joined the staff as a teacher. It is not easy transitioning to a new school even with years of teaching experience. There is typically a lot to learn but at this time, there is a little extra! I cannot imagine having Lichele's position under normal circumstances, let alone now, but she makes it look easy! She has started a Technology Cohort for us so that we may get extra practice and learn helpful tips. Lichele always makes herself available to help us when we are struggling or if we just have a questions. She is patient, kind, understanding and very knowledgeable! I am so grateful for all that Lichelle does for all of us!!!! She is magnificent!"

"As we are working through our Return to School process we have had to lean on many central office staff.  We were fortunate enough to receive some of this help from April Taylor.  Ms. Taylor spent over an hour with our team as we walked through both general and specific staffing questions with the patience of a saint.  She made sure that all of our questions were answered, helped us move on to our next steps, and established a follow-up procedure to make sure we are on top of everything.  A good part of this was done past what I imagine Ms. Taylor's contracted hours are but we never felt hurried or that we were in any way inconveniencing her.  To the contrary, while it is certain that she had a significant amount of work to get back to, Ms. Taylor gave us undivided attention and brought calm and clarity to what could be an otherwise stressful and chaotic process.  We are truly lucky to have Ms. Taylor as a resource."

"I've worked with Emily, our math resource teacher, for three years now at Freedom Hill. Emily has taught me so much and has supported my growth as a critical thinking math teacher. She has supported my transition to math workshop and celebrates the progress my students and I make throughout the year. Emily introduced me to Number Talks several years ago and has supported my growth as a teacher who unpacks a unit with my students at the center.  With Emily's support I have been able to give my students a more independent and challenging learning experience. Working with Emily has made me more comfortable with taking risks and inviting feedback.  She is always willing to attend my class and takes the time to compliment my teaching as well as my students' skills as they work to become great workshop partners in mathematics. Without fail, if I ask Emily to plan, she is there for me! This has been so important to me as I teach a different math level in my grade.  While she is our math go-to, Emily has also lent her support as a friend which just makes her that much more amazing! Emily is a superstar resource teacher and I am so grateful for her support and guidance!"

"Amy Haughton has been an incredibly valuable asset to Lake Braddock this year.  As the Special Education Department Chair for Cat A in the high school, she has managed and coordinated a staff of over 35 people working on almost 400 IEPs without one complaint and completely driven on solutions and results.  This includes virtual addendums for all IEPs, supporting teachers and instructional assistants as they prepare not only to support students, but also deliver great instruction.  She has taken on her own caseload, assumed responsibility for initial evaluations, provided specific schedules and checklists, and a variety of other tasks aimed at alleviating the workload for staff.  She works relentlessly with a focus on doing what's best for students and her department.  At a time when people need support more than ever, Amy has provided a rock hard foundation that has held up our department.  We are incredibly fortunate to have Amy at Lake Braddock."

I reached out to Mr. Walton to gain clarification surrounding the protocols for teachers returning to the building as we prepare to welcome some of our students back.  To begin with, he was incredibly quick with his response and allowed me to call as opposed to simply going back and forth over e-mail. During our call he took his time to provide in-depth explanations for all of my questions and made sure to follow up to ensure clarity on my part.  Mr. Walton was incredibly good-natured and patient as we walked through the process.  While in the midst of what I can imagine is an insurmountable workload at this time, Mr. Walton took 20 minutes out of his day and made me feel like I was the only focus of his afternoon.  FCPS is extremely lucky to have somebody like Mr. Walton supporting their staff.

On October 8, the Fairfax County Fire Marshal conducted a Fire Prevention Code Permit Inspection of facility.  He found "NO VIOLATIONS".  This is a particularly significant given the size of our building, presence of a central kitchen, and limited presence of staff for the past seven months. This success was the result of the combined work and dedication of our Safety and Security Staff led by Kevin Mahan, Custodial Staff led by Rosa Cruz, and Plant Engineer - Herb Rodriguez.

I want her to know how incredible she made my daughter's first experience, who even said, “Wait mom - I think I can do this!”  She is amazing and she ought to know it- I know she’s working on her masters she said in online education ironically.  She couldn’t be more well-suited for the task!  I’ve told her she has definitely found her calling and that she is clearly following the calling she was designed for- her students (and their families) are so very lucky to have her!"

One unexpected place that I have seen this goal accomplished and surpassed in the most incredible way is art class at Woodburn School by one of their amazing art teachers, Jonathan Kettler. Art projects and activities can be challenging for my son, a current second grader, for various reasons. In first grade, Mr. Kettler was very proactive in making sure that my son had extra support in art class so that he could feel successful working on the projects in class. As a result of Mr. Kettler’s attention to the needs of each of his students, my son looked forward to art class! Mr. Kettler has continued to be very in tune with the needs of his students in the virtual setting this year and I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to see Mr. Kettler in action during virtual art class. He makes sure to get all of the students involved and recognize the efforts that they are making in working on their creative endeavors and art projects. Mr. Kettler is very encouraging of their work and his students are so proud to share their work with him! "Ms. Saliba has made a very positive and discernible impact in my son's life even in the very short time we have been with her. She has helped my son in his transition from out of State (we are new to FCPS, and to VA) during this remote learning period by constantly supporting both him and me, with strategies and interventions during his school day; She also went above and beyond by making sure the remote learning situation did not impede him developing a therapeutic rapport with her; As an example, she set up meetings with him in open fields (socially distant and with masks) to get to observe him and have him connect with her; immediately after that meeting my son's responsiveness to her remote instructions, and his attention, improved, and we also saw an impact on how he communicated with us outside of school; She also made herself available to me any time of the day by phone calls and emails; And her advice was always very useful; Ms. Saliba is a wonderful and talented Special education teacher who gives her all to her students and clearly knows how to maximize their strength and work on improving their weaknesses. I do not think we would have had a successful remote learning experience, for a child on the Autism spectrum, with attention issues AND who has joined from another school, if it wasn't for Ms. Saliba! It was very impressive when I heard the same impression from other parents who have kids with special needs, who were lucky to have had Ms. Saliba as their teacher; She is a rare breed and such an asset for the Franklin Sherman school!"

Stephen Firebaugh, Kent Gardens ES

"My family is new to Kent Gardens this year and my husband and I were nervous about my daughter starting a new school virtually. We were not sure if she would be able to engage in a class with kids and teachers she did not know. She was feeling very down for weeks leading up to the first day of school. It was difficult learning virtually from the past Spring with classmates she had known for year, we couldn’t imagine how it would be at a new school, not knowing anyone. Our expectations for this school year were very low. However, I was proven wrong from the very first day. My daughter’s home room teacher, Mr. Firebaugh instantly drew our attention the moment he started his class. He was very upbeat and his positive energy and sincerity radiated through the computer screen. For the first week, he spent a lot of time getting to know each student. I could tell he wasn’t just going through the motions of asking questions, but he was sincere and made efforts to really engage and took his time getting to know each student. I was blown away by his efforts with making each student feel important. His instructions and way of teaching are always very clear and he will repeat them over and over until every student is on board and caught up. My daughter has always been hesitant to ask questions in class, fearful she would get in trouble for not knowing. However, we hear Mr. Firebaugh ask at the end of every lesson, “any questions?” about 5 times before he moves onto the next lesson. He makes students feel unafraid to ask questions. He is nurturing a safe and fun environment, which is the best way for any student to learn. He engages with every student and makes sure each student is reaching their goals and on target with their assignments. Mr. Firebaugh has a genuine love for kids and he is not only the best teacher my daughter has ever had, but the best teacher my husband and I have ever had! We both wish we had Mr. Firebaugh as our teacher growing up. I remind my daughter how lucky she is to have a teacher that cares for her and is so supportive. We don’t know how he does it, he is calm and collective at times when most adults would panic, whether it’s technical issues or kids not following directions, we have never seen Mr. Firebaugh react in frustration or anger. I have rarely met a teacher who I truly believe are destined to teach. And we are so blessed to have the opportunity to have Mr. Firebaugh be that teacher for our daughter. To say Mr. Firebaugh is the best teacher is an understatement. His patience, attention to detail, efforts to connect with each student, enthusiasm, and perseverance teaching each day with the same care as the day before is beyond our comprehension. My family is grateful for Mr. Firebaugh. He has made such a big impact on my daughter’s 4th grade year as a new student and I know she will remember and carry this important experience forever.  She enjoys his read aloud time very much, his sincerity and passion for teaching radiates despite the limited capabilities teachers have to engage virtually. EVERY student deserves a Mr. Firebaugh, we are so fortunate to have crossed paths with him."

"Mr Gentner was an absolute gem when we had to take two of the laptops in for service due to audio not working. It was the day for materials pick up, and although we had made an appointment at 5pm and arrived at 4:40, we found that the line was insanely long. I texted him to make another appointment time for the computers, but instead he walked outside to pick up the computers (all of us masked) and worked on them while I was in line. When we finally got to the front of the line at 5:32pm, he was done replacing one computer and updating the drivers on the other. It was a frustrating day for us to have to wait that much past our appointment time to pick up a workbook, but his sympathy for us and above-and-beyond effort made it more bearable. He was amazing and must be commended! Thank you!"
