Central Office: Luisa OsorioMurray, Dunn Loring Center

"As a school without a parent liaison, it makes it a little more challenging to help our new parents who speak limited or no English. We want all of our parents and students to feel connected and supported here and communication is so important. When we are unable to communicate with parents regarding the immediate needs of their students, we scramble to do our best! Today, Luisa was the answer to our needs and had such a willing attitude and a caring heart. This morning, Luisa answered the call when I was in need of immediate assistance. We had a first-grade student, new to Oak View in the last month, who became ill and was refusing to get help in the health room. The student's mother does not speak English. Luisa was able to help with immediate assistance and then further help the school by sending names of interpreters for a follow-up conference. In the past, the process to help schools with immediate interpreting has been arduous. Luisa could have politely given me a list of interpreters as only one of two staff members who receive phone calls for assistance. She recognized the need for this parent to understand in a quick and timely manner the health concern for the student. Kudos to her for recognizing that student needs always come first. Today she became an honorary Oak View Eagle through her support for one of our Eagles. Luisa is the kind of employee you want on the other end of the line when you have an immediate need."

Region 1: Mary Specht, Hutchison ES

"Mary is a parent liaison at Hutchison Elementary. There is a student whose mother has cancer. Mary has worked tirelessly to help provide support and encouragement for the family and the student. Mary was just recently out of school because she had surgery, but that did not stop her from reaching out to the family that day to encourage the mom and the family while she was recovering herself. This is just one of many examples of her character and excellence that she brings to FCPS and truly shows that she cares."

Region 2: Patricia Brown and Jane Scharankov, Annandale HS

"Thank you, Pat and Jane, for going above and beyond for our students! On top of having all new library systems and rearranging the entire library, they have seen 90 classes in September and October, to include all 9th and 11th grade English students, CAT B English, 8 ESOL Strategies for Success classes, all 3 Theory of Knowledge classes (after school class included), as well as other miscellaneous CAT B classes. In addition, Pat and Jane coordinated with the public library to bring 600 library cards to our Annandale students. They made our CAT B students library cards to practice in our school library for when they use their real one at the public library. Jane and Pat have also collaborated with our SBTS and TSSpec to have the Libby public library app pushed out to all AHS student computers so our students can use online resources that we do not have at Annandale High School. Now all students have access to licensing practice tests such as Physician’s Assistant, Pharmacy Tech, Culinary, and Auto Tech."

Region 3: Dave Checcino, Lee HS

"Dr. Checcino is fully engaged in his work and regularly works nights and weekends to support his students and the Lee HS Counseling department. He is seen multiple times each week at evening student events to support our community and cheer on our students. Dr. Checcino has a knowledge base and extensive institutional memory that assists our Student Services Department with historical perspectives, facts, and methods that help our students in academics and future planning. He has been an asset and deserves to be recognized for his work, passion, and dedication to our school and system."

Region 4: Martha Bloom, Orange Hunt ES

"Martha Bloom is a first grade, special education, instructional assistant. Martha continually goes above and beyond to meet the needs of the special education students. In November, Ms. Bloom used a table in the lobby to have a small lunch crew for students who were having trouble being successful in the cafeteria. This spot soon became a "lunch bunch" place all students hoped to visit. General education and special education students have enjoyed this special lunch spot with different students joining her on a variety of days. Martha Bloom brought in a battery-powered candelabra, music, and napkins. It has been a wonderful experience to see the smiles and conversations that are happening. In addition, Ms. Bloom is very attentive during recess. The attentiveness to the students with disabilities is heartwarming. She helps students with physical disabilities access playground equipment the child could not get to individually. This inspires other students to interact and include all in play. I am grateful to have her as part of our first-grade team."

Region 5: Kevin Mahan, Westfield HS

"During a recent school threat, Mr. Mahan worked with the Office of Safety and Security until at least 11:30 pm to coordinate additional resources for our school. Throughout this challenging event, he periodically updated me, coordinated additional support, and ensured he and his team projected a calm demeanor to students and staff. His leadership with his team and around campus was key to lessening many staff and students’ concerns."

Cuong Ly, Riverside ES

"Mr. Cuong Ly has been a member of our custodial team for many years at Riverside. Although smaller in stature, Mr. Ly has a giant heart and tremendous work ethic. He consistently steps up whenever he is needed to support the many community events or internal initiatives we have at Riverside that require the support of the custodial team. Mr. Ly is focused and determined to show up on time for work every day and to take direction as needed to complete the many tasks that are placed before him. He believes in hard work, teamwork, and in making our school look as good as it possibly can so that our students can thrive in a clean and organized instructional setting. The “can do” attitude he brings to his colleagues is contagious and I have never heard him complain about anything he is asked to do. His smile is shared with every staff member he meets during the afternoon and evening shift, and he embodies the Riverside motto of “Effort and Attitude” every day."

Ana Chavez, Riverside ES

"Ana Chavez has been my administrative assistant now for almost a year. She hit the ground running when she received the promotion by attending various trainings, taking meticulous notes to be able to effectively navigate the many new systems and software, and asking the right questions when she needed additional support. Ana was tasked with the responsibilities of a finance technician before we eased her into the roles of office manager and the administrative assistant to the principal. She took these responsibilities in stride and worked incredibly hard to overcome the learning curve in a short period of time so that she could be the person to lead the office staff, manage a backlog of financial statements and reconciliations, and support me as the building principal. Ana is still found at her desk long after she should be, as she prioritizes and executes tasks in support of sound organizational management. She has been successful in this role because she spends time building quality relationships with her peers and colleagues, she communicates with clarity and respect, and she positions herself to be the tremendous support for the many factions that exist within the school building. Ana is a kind and genuine person, whose influence extends well beyond her office walls and we greatly appreciate her contributions to supporting the Caring Culture that Riverside is known for today."

"Thank you Patti & Courtney! You have both helped maintain our front office while we had a staff vacancy among office staff. Patti and Courtney kept our office running smoothly while the position was vacant. Both ladies have helped by picking up a few extra tasks, and Patti has worked with the new staff member to learn about mutual office tasks and to review skills which all office staff needs to help us run smoothly every day. In addition, both Patti and Courtney have maintained a positive attitude and giving spirit. Thank you Patti & Courtney for going over and beyond the usual duties to help our office continue to work efficiently as you maintained a positive and supportive personality in our office. "Ms. Klibansky showed unconditional positive regard towards a parent in a situation that was both complex and very challenging. She placed the needs of the student first and she invited the parent to be a part of that child's learning process. She did whatever it took to build a bridge for that relationship to occur and she allowed herself to be vulnerable thru the experience which took great courage, professional maturity and integrity. Her passion and commitment to children is seen everyday. I had an opportunity to witness it through her words & her actions on November 26th. Thank you for that opportunity."

"As a newer teacher, Amanda’s dedication to educating her students and meeting their behavioral needs is truly remarkable. "Riverside Elementary School’s 2nd Grade Team has shown commitment to providing meaningful learning experiences for our 2nd grade students. As a team, they have made it a goal to provide rigorous learning experiences for all students and engage students in higher level thinking. This quarter, they taught measurement using the advanced academic curriculum resource, M2: Mentoring Young Mathematicians. They collaborated and committed to taking an instructional risk by trying something new with their students. As a result of their dedication, our students were able to participate in a meaningful learning experience that helped them to learn about measurement. "This year, one of the 1st grade teachers took a new position after the school year started. After intensely searching for an appropriate candidate, we were fortunate enough to find and hire Jessica Szumlicz. Ms. Szumlicz has been an AMAZING asset to our Riverside School Community. She immediately jumped in and began building relationships with her students. She regularly collaborates with her colleagues and coaches to better support her in planning and delivering engaging instruction. Ms. Szumlicz is a true professional as she works diligently to consistently meet deadlines and expectations. We are so thankful to have found Ms. Szumlicz and are so grateful that she chose to work at Riverside ES!"

Her strong leadership skills combined with her passion for teaching makes her an excellent educator! "As the yearbook adviser, Adrienne has gone above and beyond to help the class of 2020 with some of our initiatives this year. She took the time to go through previous yearbooks to grab pictures of Robinson Alumni who are current staff members. She went searching through several to find pictures from their senior year in high school so we could include them in our "Guess that Senior? - Staffulty Edition" display. Additionally, she has been working with the family of a class of 2020 student to include a tribute page for him in the yearbook so his classmates will be able to remember their peer whom they lost."

"Mr. Budimir is a huge asset to our Riverside School Community. He is one of our most beloved Special Education teachers. He works hard every day to ensure that all of his students are not only working to meet their academic and social goals but that they feel loved and safe to take risks. Mr. Budimir comes to work every day full of positivity, flexibility, and with a solution-based approach to all problems. Last Friday, we were short several substitute teachers. Mr. Budimir walked into the office, saw that we had a problem, and immediately asked how he could help. He openly volunteered to support one of our 4th-grade classes who was without a teacher for that day. This has happened on more than one occasion. We are so grateful for Mr. Budimir and thank him for always being so flexible and willing to help!"

"Being a parent of a child with behavioral and emotional difficulties is an unbelievably scary and isolating experience. You fear that your child will be labeled just a “Bad Kid” instead of being seen as a child that needs help. As a family, we struggled to find a path to help our child, till our child started Ms. Carbonara’s Class. Going above and beyond her job as a teacher, she has helped this struggling family to find the right path and provided so much support to our child. She ensured we have the right support, contacts, communication needed to kick start his path for improvement and growth. She has been his structure and provided help whenever he needed it. either by her or finding the right person to help. There are many involved in his recovery process at the school, teachers, and admins that care. I no longer spend my mornings crying in my car, thinking there is nothing I can do to help him. She and the Lees Corner family truly care about the children at this school."

I was surprised as I hadn't called it in yet and he mentioned that I said I would have more so he thought he would stop and check on his way to Wilton Woods. Now that's customer service! He remembered our conversation and decided to be proactive and just check. Thanks, Chris, for going above and beyond! We appreciate all of you shred guys!!!!"

Noel Miller, Centreville HS

Noel serves as the Head Librarian at CVHS but she wears many hats! Not only does she write an inspirational quote out each day to welcome students into the library, but she hosts hundreds of students before and after school each day and during lunches as well. Noel has created a welcoming atmosphere for students who need to work as well as students who need a break. She has set up a relaxation corner in the library with ongoing puzzles and relaxing coloring pages for students to work on as a way to unwind from the stresses of the day. She is in charge of the daily school news program and a sponsor for the National Honor Society. On top of everything else, she is always helpful when staff is in need of a cd player or a technology cart setup. Noel is an invaluable member of the CVHS staff and her efforts are greatly appreciated!

"Ms. Downing is a bus driver supervisor for Mount Vernon team 14. We have been very short-handed on the road and in the office this year and she has risen to every challenge with a smile on her face. Kathy had been my mentor in year's past. She has been an amazing mentor ever since. "This morning, when I was driving past Herndon High School, there was a group of students up ahead who were waiting and waiting to cross the street. No one was stopping. Bus #1887, driven by Cynthia Thompson, stopped and put on the bus lights to stop all traffic. I followed the bus, knocked on the door, and thanked her. She said that she loves being a bus driver and she and the kids lift each other up. She has so much respect for all of the kids whether they are on the bus or not. Thank you, Ms. Thompson!"

Lou Bean, Lake Braddock SS

"I have had the pleasure to observe Lou Bean teach band every day for the last 15 years. Lou develops an outstanding rapport with his students. He builds trust through engaging in one on one relationships with his students. He speaks to them before, during, and after class about their daily lives, playing their instruments, and how they are doing in classes. He is slow and patient with his students. He ensures every student is successful in every exercise, skill set, and performance. He breaks down concepts into small pieces creating building blocks of knowledge to scaffold student success. With this approach, Lou has an extraordinary talent in bringing together students from over 7 different elementary schools and creating an outstanding ensemble in just a year. By 8th grade, they are performing well above many high school bands from across the state of Virginia. Lou Bean’s students love working with him. He has an endearing personality that his students gravitate toward. His intelligent and humorous demeanor engages the students and they respond quickly to him. They appreciate him being fun and helpful. They know he will push them to be their best, and they respect him for it. This cooperative learning environment has helped the ensemble receive consistent superior ratings at concert assessments, competitions, and solo and ensemble festivals. They have been awarded numerous “Esprit de Corps” awards at competitions for their discipline, performance level, and desire to be great. This is a direct result of his leadership. Lou Bean is arguably one of the best middle school band directors in the nation. His experience brings students the knowledge and pedagogical skills which develop great young musicians. These musicians are not only talented but excited to come to class and work together with their peers. They create outstanding group projects through performance collaborations. Each year Lou has more students audition into the district honor band than any other school. Normally over 50% of the honor band is comprised of Lake Braddock Middle School band students. Lou is also a committee chair for the John Philip Sousa Association’s “Sudler Cup.” The award is considered the top distinction a middle school band can receive in the nation. Lou received his with the Lake Braddock Middle School Band in 2001. Lou Bean hosts multiple community events for his students. He hosts the District Middle School State Concert Band Assessment, arguably one of the best events in the area. His colleagues always feel comfortable bringing their ensembles to Lake Braddock and participating in our state testing. He collaborates with directors to create schedules, works with adjudicators to bring the best educators into critic our students, and works with his students and parents to run the event. Lou also leads a large community band camp every summer for students from elementary school through high school for a summer band camp. He assembles a staff to provide outstanding educational opportunities for the students and they present a terrific concert for the community at the end of the camp. Lou also assists with the high school recruitment trip for the middle school band. Together we organize a joint trip with the 8th graders, traveling to a high school competition for them to observe the roles of the high school band outside of football games. He was instrumental in implementing this new venture that helps encourage, recruit, and retain lifetime musicians from middle to high school. Lou Bean also organizes a large community service project with his students. Every winter he does a canned food drive with the Middle School Bands to provide support to our local community. Students and families bring in donations to the winter concert and fill so many large boxes that they require a truck to come pick them up. The students feel a great sense of pride for helping the community and working together. Lou Bean provides outstanding mentorship in our department. He works with his colleagues helping prepare them for their performances and developing their students’ skills. He does sectionals for both the high school band and orchestra. Lou travels with the high school marching band to football games and marching competitions to help prepare the students for their performances. He is also a great resource for the department for generating ideas to grow and build programs. Many of our department members have modeled aspects of their program after his curriculum, recruitment, and performance procedures. Lou is always available to share best practices in music education and is willing to visit classrooms to help colleagues with their instruction and students. One of my favorite experiences with Lou Bean is his spring performance trip and competition. He travels to Richmond every spring to have all the middle school bands evaluated. He is well organized, and his students are well prepared. The competition hosts are always overwhelmed by the group’s demeanor and maturity. We bring over 250 middle school students to the site each year. They always compliment Lou on the group being the best behaved, best trained, and quietest group in attendance. However, my most memorable experiences come after the competition is over. Lou takes his students to Kings Dominion. There, Lou loves to go to the Log Flume where he spends quarter after quarter on the water blasters to soak people on the ride. Lou lights up when people shriek with joy as they get hit with water. The best moments are when he gets his students. They scream and then cheer when they realize it was him behind the water canon. They come running to find him after the ride, ecstatic about the exchange. It is a true love his students have for him. After all the work and time spent together crafting their trade, they can break loose and enjoy some fun together. When other students see what is going on, they run to get in line so that they can get sprayed by “Mr. Bean!” Another amazing experience happens every year at the District Middle School Concert Assessment. Lou Bean’s band always performs last because he always has the largest band. Each year, directors from around the region come just to hear his ensemble play. Afterward, the directors and adjudicators swarm him. They are always blown away by the work he does with his students and the level of maturity the students play with. While they complement the students’ abilities, they are more impressed with how much joy they see in the students when they play for Lou. Each year directors come to me saying, “You are so lucky to have Lou” to which I always say, “Yes I am!” Lou Bean has been an unsung hero at Lake Braddock for 28 years. The high school program would not have the successes it enjoys if it were not for Lou. His love for teaching, love for students, and love for music inspire all. It is infectious. He is the “pied piper” of band. He deserves a moment of recognition for all his work, all the success of his students, and many years of gratitude we all feel for his involvement in our programs and school. "Raquel Joyner is the Behavior Specialist at Quander Road School. It’s an extremely demanding job. She deals with behaviors daily but has a way of making every student feel valued while helping them to problem-solve. Due to a serious foot injury, our Special Education Department chair at Quander Road School has been out on leave for a few months. Every student at Quander has an IEP which means there are numerous addendums and IEP changes happening on a frequent basis. Raquel Joyner has taken on all the duties of the Department Chair. That includes scheduling meetings, monitoring IEP workflow, and acting as principal designee. All of this is in addition to her regular position as our Behavior Specialist. Regardless of the demands, Raquel is always the calm in the storm and I’ve never heard her complain. She deserves a huge thank you!"

"Our cafeteria staff is the best in FCPS. Every Veteran's Day, we have our community Thanksgiving Luncheon as well as celebrating our Veterans. This means a huge increase in volume from daily lunch, but also a longer serving time from beginning to end. Starting lunch at 10:45 makes getting all the morning paperwork from breakfast a little more urgent to get through, but Sally and her crew manage to do it perfectly every time. Our Thanksgiving Lunch service went off without a hitch, smoothly, with no delays. Most of all, the whole cafeteria staff showed the excitement of the day by having big smiles for everyone. The pride these ladies take in their work is a wonderful lesson for our students, that every adult in the building does their best work as an example, and works hard for the students. I’ve spoken a lot about their effort on the day of the Luncheon, but please understand; this is not just on special days, this is every day. Our school motto is Effort and Attitude, and these ladies have both with tons to spare! We are so proud of them, and thankful for them, not just on special days, but every day."

The Lynbrook Elementary Staff, Lynbrook ES

"I have worked in four schools in the county and have taught abroad. Never before have I experienced a workplace where the entire staff is as caring and as hard-working as the staff at Lynbrook Elementary School. The majority of the students at Lynbrook are second language learners, many of whom have experienced trauma in their life. These students face challenges beyond learning in a new language and have to navigate their culture with a foreign one. Despite these obstacles, our students succeed because our staff holds them to high expectations and knows that each one can be successful if we provide them with sound instruction. Teachers collaborate and plan instruction that encourages students to ask questions and have conversations with each other. They believe learning is social and the ability to communicate and collaborate are essential life skills. Not only does our staff plan and implement instruction that both challenges students and considers the individual learner, but they also care deeply for our students. Teachers spend precious moments building trust with their students through morning meetings, mentor programs, before and after school activities, and at lunch. Students’ needs are considered in each situation, in order to facilitate their success. The most challenging students are sought out by teachers who spend valuable time getting to know them to find out what motivates and drives them to be successful. Students who need extra practice frequently meet with teachers during lunch and work in small intervention groups. The work teachers do is built on strong leaders who guide staff members into being the best they can be. Our administrative team nurtures the skill sets each teacher has, develops those skills, and fosters growth for learning. In addition to valued leadership skills, our administrative team genuinely cares for its staff members. They are supportive when emergencies happen and when teachers need to take time for themselves. Complementing our teachers and administration is the office staff, the custodial staff, and cafeteria workers. Our school runs like clockwork because of the organization and planning done in the office. They are the first to greet parents and families and they are always eager to help. Our office team even invests time to get to know our students, support and mentor them. The custodians make our school welcoming with the simplest of smiles. They work tirelessly to maintain our school grounds and keep our facilities running smoothly. Maintenance requests are completed with swift precision. The students at Lynbrook Elementary rely on nutritious meals throughout the day. Thankfully, our cafeteria staff is on the job bright and early, carefully organizing the breakfast bags, making sure to serve our students a healthy meal. Once breakfast is over, they prepare lunch, including the popular salad bar filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, and protein, vital to our students’ health.
Lynbrook Elementary School is a special place. The moment you step into the building, you are greeted with a smile and a feeling that you belong. All the staff creates a caring environment for students and each other. Our community supports each other in the common goal to guide and support our students to achieve academically and socially. "Mme Jugnet has been my French teacher for the past four years (9-12). Before that, I was an average student in French, getting B grades in grades 7 and 8, without any exposure to the language outside of school. Since the first class with Mme Jugnet, I realized that the way she teaches the language is engaging the whole class and motivates us to put additional effort in preparation for each class. Her active teaching style supported by vivid life stories from francophone societies that were particularly appealing to me. Even though I did not have any exposure to the French language and culture before her class, she broadened my horizons to immerse in the profound francophone world. Encouraged by her classes, I started watching French movies, listening to French radio, and establishing pen pals in France. By the end of the first year of Mme Jugnet's class, I became proficient in French. Thanks to Mme Jugnet's initiative, I hosted an exchange student from France, starting a friendship that lasts till today. In June 2018, I sat for the official language proficiency examination organized by the French Ministry of Education in New York City, Diplôme d'Etudes en Langue Française (DELF). Even though I have never had any extracurricular French instruction, nor exposure to the language in my family, beside the standard FCPS coursework, I managed to achieve a score of 70 percent, substantially above the passing mark of 50 percent. The results of the exam are sufficient to meet official French proficiency requirements for study and work in France (and in other francophone countries). Proficiency in French obtained in Mme Jugnet's class created opportunities that I would have never thought about. This would not have been possible without extensive personal efforts by Mme Jugnet, who was always available even outside the regular class schedule to help explain and provide guidance. As I am in my senior year now, with focus on Higher Level IB Courses in Math and Physics, I am seriously considering to apply to highly competitive international engineering programs in Francophone countries besides top colleges in the US. I am extremely grateful to Mme Jugnet for her outstanding commitment and passion to provide the highest level of instruction at FCPS."

She brings a “can do” attitude and consistently creates engaging lessons that motivate kids---especially those who didn’t know they loved learning Spanish. I am not only impressed with Willa’s collaborative attitude and willingness to share new ideas with colleagues, but her poise and patience with her students, even "Los chicos locos." She greets her students at the door, welcomes them with a smile, and unifies them around the day’s lesson. She also is receptive to new ideas and constantly is finding ways to refine her craft in classroom management and instructional delivery. Each of her classes is an example of a mini-family, within the extended FamiLee. Great job, Willa---we’re all so proud of you."

"I thank and commend Paul for his extraordinarily hard work and for always going above and beyond to make sure things run smoothly when we have big events here at Laurel Ridge. I have had the privilege of working with Paul for many special events at Laurel Ridge, and whenever I see him walk through the door, I know we are in good hands. He arrived two hours early for the final setup for our Veterans Day ceremony this morning. Once everything was set up and we tested the music coming from the laptop, we were getting a high level of buzzing from our school's sound system. Paul and I tried a few different approaches to troubleshooting, but the buzzing was still present. All of the cables had already been gaffered down and everything was in place, and Paul could have sat back with the less than perfect conditions, but he immediately went out to his truck to find a whole different set of cables to try, which worked perfectly. He worked quickly to run and tape down all the new cables before the audience arrived. It means a lot to get to work with someone who doesn’t settle for “good enough” and who goes that extra step to make sure everything is the best possible. Thank you for sending Paul to us and for all he did to make this morning's ceremony memorable and meaningful for all of our veteran guests."

"DJ Hemsley did an Amazing job supporting Stone Middle School this past weekend. Our PA system which controls our bells and all communications with staff and students went down after hours on Friday. We put a work order in and contacted a few people who were supportive. However, DJ worked with us, contacted others, and was in constant communication with our staff at Stone. We had some anxiety with the thought of having to wait until Monday to have this fixed. Because of DJ’s support not only is it working but he contacted us back to let us know. I know this may not sound like much but to me (school-based administrator) he really did a great job!! Thanks again to DJ and your department for doing the work behind the scenes to help keep our schools running!!"

"Career and Transition Services (CTS) cares about Neva Apsche!!!! During the summer, Ms. Apsche supported two CTS curriculum projects: (1) Tools for Self-Advocacy and (2) Community Work Experience Safety. She provided resources, information on copyright rules, and published the lessons in eCart. In August, Ms. Apsche facilitated a back-to-school workshop with Microsoft Office consultants for two hundred (plus) CTS teachers on accessibility and learning features available on student laptops. In September, Ms. Apsche entered the new work place readiness skills (WRS) competencies into Horizon for CTS (WAT and EFE) teachers. In October, she
contributed in a training for academy support teachers on OneNote, Office 365, and WRS resources in eCart. Last week, Ms. Apsche assisted in training CTS evaluators at the Microsoft Office Store on Windows 10. Thank you Ms. Neva Apsche for providing CTS staff with tools to be a premier workforce and resources to promote student success!"

She has an incredible way of balancing a difficult and stressful job with being a thoughtful and nurturing role model for our children. From the first day of school, she has displayed a necessary command over her bus and quickly earned the respect of her passengers. This has enabled her to both keep the children safe and to do her job most effectively. She is EXTREMELY punctual. She has meticulously studied the traffic patterns in our area so that she can navigate the flow of vehicles and many traffic signals in such a way to ensure the timely arrivals of our children both to and from Willow Springs. Additionally, she genuinely cares about her passengers. Is your child apprehensive about riding the bus on the first day of school? Ms.
Susan has coloring books! Is your child having a bad day? Ms. Susan has stickers! Did your child forget their water bottle on the bus for the third time? Ms. Susan finds it and returns it with a smile on her face. She and her husband also support Willow Springs by attending school fundraisers and events. Whenever my children see her - either on the bus or at a school activity - they are sure to greet her with smiles and hugs. She goes 'above and beyond' her job description and gets to know each child. We are so thankful that Ms. Susan serves as a beacon of light for them at the beginning, during and at the end of their school days!"

"Aaron Curtis has been incredibly responsive to requests for warehouse pickups and deliveries to Weyanoke. He is consistently prompt in answering emails and/or phone calls, and is always upbeat and positive. Recently, he and his team helped me to find and select replacement office furniture, schedule a delivery within a few days of our initial conversation, took away the old furniture and installed the new furniture. The team was friendly, efficient, and were clearly experts in their jobs. Each time I have interacted with Aaron, whether in person or over the phone, he exceeds my expectations for personal service and professionalism. Tina Brown, Little Run ES

"Tina Brown is an exceptional teacher. She teaches students (and staff) the joy of movement and play. Her connections do not end after spending seven years teaching students in her PE classes. She has spent her entire career at Little Run (more than 20 years) and is now beginning to teach the children of her first students. Her commute to Maryland is often more than an hour each way—and she has three school-aged boys who are active in sports. Even though she has little “free” time, she keeps staff (current and former) updated on successes of former students—most recently the first basketball game in college for one of our Roadrunners. Last year she reached out to former staff to create a video for the 6th-grade sendoff—ensuring that students and families knew they were loved (even if from afar). This year she shared the news that a former student was in a life-changing accident on the first day of school. Mrs. Brown sprang into action—making sure former staff members were aware and keeping the family in their thoughts. Not only did she visit the family in the hospital, but she also collected cards, notes, and stories to deliver. But the most memorable act was the creation of a video for the family with staff members recounting their favorite memories of the family and wishes for a speedy recovery. The video ended with a song that all Little Runners know. Mrs. Brown plays the song “Low Rider” every year as one of her warm-up songs due to its steady beat. Imagine the joy as I watched this young man (who graduated from her program 5 years prior!) recognize and respond to her voice and the song. She has a tremendous heart, and this action was so far above and beyond. She is a treasure."
