Coaches Education

Information for coaches about requirements, course dates, reimbursement, and more!

Virginia High School League (VHSL) Coaches in FCPS are required to complete 4 components of training within one year of their start date with a FCPS team.

Required Components:

1.) FCPS Athletics Orientation/FCPS Local

The orientation class is offered at the beginning of each season to cover policies and procedures specific to FCPS. This course should be completed PRIOR to their first day coaching.

The Coaches' Resource Guides (Part 1 and 2) will soon be available electronically! Current versions please email: FCPSSAAP@fcps.edu. Please review both before attending your orientation class.

2.) Concussion Education

All coaches must complete a Concussion Education course and present the completion certificate to activities office staff PRIOR to their first day coaching (VHSL Rule-2010; Virginia Student-Athlete Protection Act - SB652).

REMEMBER:
Concussion Education course MUST be completed EACH SCHOOL YEAR (After May 1st and before the first day of coaching).

Acceptable courses include (choose one!):

3.) NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching AND VHSL State component

  1. Complete the online NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching bundle
  2. Send in proof of completion to:

4.) Sports First Aid

** The  American Sport Education Program (ASEP)/American Red Cross Sports First Aid online course will NOT be accepted.

** The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Sports First Aid online course will NOT be accepted. You must complete the FCPS Sports First Aid course**

 

To access the FCPS Sports First Aid course you must:

  1. Be added to the local school coach education database by the Activities Office at your school
  2. Possess your FCPS network credentials (username and password). 

 

There are TWO components to Sports First Aid:

1.) Accessing FCPS online Sports First Aid

  • Login using your FCPS credentials 
    (Login is temporarily down until MyPDE Launch ~10/28/2019)
    "First Aid, CPR and AED Training"
  • Complete the course

The online portion must be completed first; once completed, you can register for an in-person session. You will NOT be able to complete the online course without your FCPS credentials!

Coaches MUST complete the online course AT LEAST 48 HOURS before the date of the in-person course.

 

2.) Registering for in-person Sports First Aid

  • Login using your FCPS credentials 
    (Login is temporarily down until MyPDE Launch ~10/28/2019)
  • Navigate to "Course Offerings"

  • Search for: Coaches' Education Sports First Aid

Coaches MUST complete the online course AT LEAST 48 HOURS before the date of the in-person course.

The in-person component includes a review of important skills and CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Please remember that BOTH portions (online AND in-person) MUST be completed before you will receive credit for Sports First Aid.

 

Courses: Sports First Aid

  • Online portion must be taken prior to taking the classroom portion.
  • Please plan ahead, these courses will fill and all have a limited capacity. If the courses scheduled do not appear when you attempt to register, they are currently at maximum capacity.
  • Wear comfortable clothes, active participation is required for CPR training and testing.
  • Due to limited enrollment, You must be registered for the class (on the date) that you attend which will be confirmed by a reminder email a few days before the class.
  • DO NOT attend the course in hopes that you can fill a no-show spot, you will not be permitted to attend the class unless you are registered or have email/voice confirmation from the Central Student Activities and Athletic Programs office. This applies to the SPORTS FIRST AID On-Site class only.

Please plan ahead, these courses will fill and all have a limited capacity.

Courses after July 2017 require completion of the online course before registering for the in-person courses below.

Reimbursement for Coaches

Reimbursement Information

Coaches are eligible for reimbursement of a portion of the fee required to complete the online NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching course. Upon completion of ALL components:

  1. Orientation/FCPS Local
  2. NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching w/VHSL State Component
  3. FCPS Sports First Aid online and classroom
  4. Concussion Education Course,

Please complete the reimbursement form and submit it to the Office of Student Activities & Athletics at the following address:

You MUST submit a copy of the transaction receipt (website receipt, credit card statement showing the transaction, etc.), along with your completed reimbursement form, to receive your reimbursement.

Note:

As of April 2010, the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching online course will include the VHSL State component, therefore after completing four courses (Orientation, NFHS Fundamentals, Concussion Education, and Sports First Aid) all components will be complete.
