FCPS ACE Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship classes compliment employer on the job training in the VA Apprenticeship Program. Classes are offered in electricity, HVAC and Plumbing. Trades classes provide career exploration in the trades or cross-training with related tasks.

ACE Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship programs train participants in a skilled trade profession. Apprentices work as full-time paid employees of a registered training sponsor company. Programs include hands-on workplace training and related instruction in a classroom setting. Successful completion of each four-level program culminates in a portable, nationally recognized NCCER credential. ACE Apprenticeship classes are approved by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) standards for apprenticeship related technical instruction.

  • As a full-time employee of the sponsoring employer, a Registered Apprentice completes a minimum of 2,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training and 144 hours of related technical instruction during each year of the apprenticeship
  • ACE apprenticeship programs offer a four-level comprehensive curriculum aligned to the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) standards
  • Each ACE class meets the annual DOLI related instruction requirement
  • Students who earn an apprenticeship certificate are eligible to sit for the corresponding journeyman licensure exam
  • Classes meet twice weekly, once online and once in person
  • The tuition fee includes an online textbook; hard copy textbook available for purchase from NCCER

Types of Apprenticeship Classes

Electrical

Students develop skills in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems. They also study electrical theory, navigate the National Electrical Code Book, select and install conductors, and work with panelboards, switchboards, and generators.

HVAC

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are integral parts of commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. Students learn techniques and skills needed to install, diagnose, repair, and maintain these increasingly complex systems. NCCER curriculum prepares students for success in this in-demand industry.

Plumbing

Plumbers do much more than unclog drains and run pipes. Plumbers design, install, and maintain water systems that move through municipal treatment plants before serving residential, commercial, and public buildings. Students are introduced to the plumbing profession as they learn to install heating, water, and drainage systems as well as safely assemble, install, and repair pipes and fittings according to specification and plumbing codes.

NCCER Core Construction Skills

NCCER Core Construction Skills is designed as a rigorous, competency-based, industry-recognized introduction to construction skills. Modules cover topics such as Basic Safety, Communication Skills, Introduction to Construction Drawings, and Construction Careers. Core is required to complete the NCCER training program and earn the credential. The Core Constructions Skills Bootcamp offers an accelerated course through a two-week full-time opportunity scheduled every June.

National Center for Construction Education and Research

Apprenticeship classes offer instruction based on the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) curriculum. NCCER provides standardized training and industry-recognized credentials via a system of assessment and certification. The NCCER registry allows craft professionals to create and maintain their records while employers can access and verify the credentials of current and potential employees. Students who pass the four-level trade curriculum as well as the Core Construction Skills class will earn an NCCER credential.
