Education for Employment Opportunities (EFEO) (Career and Transition Services)

Students build self-awareness, self-advocacy, self-determination, and customer-service skills through a comprehensive transition curriculum and an exploration of the 16 Career Clusters.

Course Description

Education for Employment Opportunities (EFEO) is an elective course located at four different school sites serving the entire county. Students travel from their base school by Fairfax County Public School (FCPS) buses. Students are taught ethical behaviors, career-research and job-acquisition methods, and workplace-communication strategies with a focus on the 22 Workplace Readiness Skills as identified by Virginia employers. As part of the course, students will have the opportunity to participate in community work experiences related to various career pathways. This course can be taken for more than one year. 

Instruction

EFEO modifies curriculum from Virginia’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Career Connections course Education for Employment, Level I – Development. Students get opportunities to develop skills and achieve competencies in the areas of:

  • Career awareness
  • Career exploration and research
  • Career preparation
  • Career training 
  • Communication skills
  • Customer service
  • Self-advocacy and self-determination skills 
  • Workplace readiness skills 

Most EFEO students take part in a community work experience as part of this class.

What supports are available in EFEO?

EFEO teachers provide individual and small group instruction aligned with students’ IEPs. Job coaches sometimes help students transition from the classroom to the business site. EFEO staff and Employment and Transition Representatives (ETRs):

  • Track student progress
  • Communicate with job coaches and employers
