AIM Program (Achievement, Integrity, and Maturity)

Serving students who have been referred by the Division Superintendent due to serious violations of the code of conduct outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R)

What Are Achievement, Integrity, Maturity (AIM) Programs?

The AIM program exclusively serves students (grades 7-12) who have been referred by:

  • the Hearings Office.
  • the School Board.
  • an individualized education program team.

These students, who have been deemed a safety and security risk to other students, might otherwise have been unable to continue to work toward graduation.

Program Overview

AIM stands for “Achievement, Integrity, and Maturity.” The AIM program is a small setting to ensure student safety. This setting also allows staff and students to build positive relationships. These relationships help students achieve success.

Achievement

  • AIM staff designs instruction to meet the needs of each student.
  • AIM staff promotes learning as a lifelong process.

Integrity

  • Being ethical positively impacts the school and community.
  • The concepts of honesty, trustworthiness, and respect are essential elements of our community.

Maturity

  • Respecting oneself and others as diverse members of society leads to greater appreciation for the contributions of others.
  • Honest self-reflection allows self-growth to occur.

Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)

AIM uses an MTSS framework in order to support student outcomes through continuous data-driven decision making. AIM provides equitable student academic opportunities, a positive school climate, and promotes social-emotional wellness through a culture of shared responsibility and collaboration among staff members and parents.

Curriculum and Instruction

Core courses in science, math, social studies, and English are offered. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), health and physical education, and some elective courses are available.

Middle school students complete their four core course requirement for promotion. High school students take three (or four depending on ability) courses per semester. Students are expected to work an additional 2.5 hours per day at home. All students will take Standards of Learning (SOL) tests and other required assessments.

The AIM program uses a blended model of instruction. Teachers supplement lessons with a Virginia Department of Education approved digital curriculum. The curriculum is aligned with Virginia SOL requirements.

Student Achievement Goals

  • Essential Life Skills: All students will demonstrate the aptitude, attitude, and skills to lead responsible, fulfilling, and respectful lives.
  • Academics: All students will obtain, understand, analyze, communicate, and apply knowledge and skills to achieve success in school and life.
  • Responsibility to the Community: All students will understand and model the important attributes that people must have to contribute to an effective and productive community and the common good for all.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

AIM uses a PBIS framework to set clear expectations for behavior. With clear expectations, a positive setting is created. The expectations are the same as those needed in a work environment.
