FCPS uses a balanced literacy approach at the elementary level that includes a reading workshop, writing workshop, a balance of direct instruction, guided practice, and independent practice, and instruction that meet students' specific learning needs.
At the secondary level, FCPS has a focus on disciplinary reading and writing across the curriculum. Explicit reading instruction and frequent opportunities to engage with authentic texts allow students to deepen their understanding of the discipline and its specific reading demands. Explicit writing instruction and frequent opportunities for practice allow students to develop critical thinking skills and apply knowledge in specific disciplinary settings.
