Early Identification Program (EIP)

Early Identification Program (EIP) is a multiyear college preparatory program for first generation, college bound middle and high school students who will be the first in their family to attend college.

The EIP represents a collaborative effort between Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), George Mason University, and other neighboring school divisions (Alexandria City, Arlington, Prince William County, Falls Church City, Manassas City, and Manassas Park).

During the school year, EIP students enjoy:

  • Math and science review days.
  • On and off-campus cultural events and experiences.
  • Tutoring sessions with university students and community volunteers.
  • A retreat to acquire leadership skills.

During the summer, students attend a three-week academic enrichment program in which they work on special projects in Science, Mathematics, English, and Technology.

Students apply to the EIP at the end of the seventh grade and enter the program in the eighth grade. To apply, students must first be recommended by a school counselors, teacher, or other caring adult. Once nominated, students and their parents are invited to attend an information meeting where program specifics are explained and applications are distributed. Should students decide to participate, they are responsible for completing and submitting the application by the specified deadline.

The EIP guarantees admission to George Mason University for those students who follow a precollege curriculum, successfully complete the program in good academic standing, and meet George Mason University’s admission requirements. Need-based financial aid is available to program participants. Whether students choose to attend George Mason University or not, the skills acquired in the program help students succeed in postsecondary education as well as in the world of work.
