The outstanding school-based support employees recognized at 2017 FCPS Honors

Rosemary Barry, Administrative Assistant, Frost Middle School, Region 5

Rosemary is often called the “Oracle of Frost,” because she knows everything and if she doesn’t have the answer, she’ll have it soon. As a PTA parent tells it: “There is no school policy or initiative about which Rosemary isn’t knowledgeable, no job title she doesn’t understand, no employee she doesn’t personally know. There isn’t even a copier she can’t fix.” In nearly two decades at Frost, Rosemary has become vital to the school, colleagues say, the consummate professional known for her intelligence, humility, and commitment to always put students first. “There are days when Frost is completely reliant on Ms. Barry to keep everything moving along smoothly,” said an assistant principal. “We call those days, weekdays.”

Russel Wade, Building Supervisor, West Springfield High School, Region 4

When there was a water main break recently at West Springfield, Russel ran around the school delivering bottles of drinking water and hauling buckets of water to flush the toilets. To Russel, who has a reputation as a problem solver who doesn’t mind getting dirty, this was just part of the job. Colleagues describe the air force veteran as a professional who’s been a calming influence since he came to the school five years ago. He’s currently dealing with a major renovation, which involved relocating 70 classrooms, but coworkers aren’t worried. “With his leadership skills,” said one, “there’s no question Russel will provide an environment for teachers to educate and students to learn, no matter what the challenges are during the school’s transformation.”

Laurie Chuslo, Instructional Assistant, Wolftrap Elementary School, Region 1

Laurie doesn’t sit down. At least that’s what it seems like to coworkers who say she’s always on the move helping children. In 13 years at Wolftrap Elementary, she’s  become the go-to instructional assistant due to her knowledge, ability to problem solve, and her incredible rapport with kids. “Whether she’s working with one child or six, Laurie will always have the attention of every child in the room,” said a colleague. She’s also remarkably flexible in what she can teach and always ready to step in and help. Laurie comfortably works with five different grade levels and is often simultaneously teaching three grade levels of math. One mother said math problems used to reduce her son to tears until Laurie began working with him. “Ms. Chuslo made him believe in himself,” she said, “and for that, am forever grateful.”

Jose Moreno, Building Supervisor, Holmes Middle School, Region 2

Jose goes above and beyond in his job as building supervisor. Not only does he ensure that the school is maintained and that community needs are met, he also serves as an inspiration to students because of all that he’s accomplished. Supervisors praise him as reliable, caring and detail oriented – someone who came mid-year and jumped right in. Jose often shares the story of his journey to the U.S. and his struggles as an immigrant with students either through an AVID or regular class. One eight grader said Jose’s story was so touching it made her cry, “He works so hard in our school,” she said. “He is so nice and kind. But he gave us really good advice: He didn’t let anyone or anything bring him down, and look where he is now.”

Gertrud Roeseler, Office Assistant, Riverside Elementary School, Region 3

For Veterans Day last November, Gertrud recorded video snippets with local military about what it was like to be a veteran in the present. Students were “entranced.” “They could see their parents and loved ones in the video, figuratively if not literally,” said a teacher. The video had kids rushing to the library to find other sources and maps about recent wars. It was an example of what colleagues say is one of Gertrud’s top skills: finding ways to use existing materials to promote learning—without additional funds. Since coming to Riverside, Gertrud has also beefed up use of technology by primary students in the media center and earned high marks for her adaptability and good nature. ”She can switch roles on a dime and is able to work with anyone on anything at any time,” said a colleague.
