The outstanding school-based hourly employees recognized at 2017 FCPS Honors

2017 Outstanding School-based Hourly Employee

Tony LaRe, Dining Room Host, Dranesville Elementary School, Region 1a picture of Tony LaRe

Anthony, or Mr. Tony as he is known to the kids and staff at Dranesville Elementary, is much more than a Cafeteria Host; he’s a trusted member of the school’s community. Mr. Tony oversees more than 100 students at any given time in the cafeteria. He understands that lunchtime is a time for students to socialize with their friends, as well as eat their lunch, and ensures they have time to do both in a safe and clean environment. Mr. Tony is a consistent and supportive presence at Dranesville who is ready to take on any task. From helping custodians clean up spills to mentoring students in his free time, Mr. Tony is an integral member of the Dranesville family.

2017 Outstanding School-based Hourly Employee Finalist

Kirsten Buchner, Spanish-Language Parent Liaison, Lanier Middle School, Region 5a picture of kristen buchner

Kirsten is a master at coordinating resources and services to assist the at-risk families at Lanier Middle School. She coordinates free dental and health care for students in need, arranges food and clothing donations and helps families apply for assistance so that students don’t go hungry or cold. She has initiated projects such as the Family Reunification Group, a six-week support program for students who immigrate to the area to live with parents they barely know, and a Café Latino night where parents can meet with school administrators and counselors and where they are encouraged to become involved in the Lanier community. Because Kirsten is a dedicated student advocate, students know they have an ally who will help them over any hurdle that impedes their success.

2017 Outstanding School-based Hourly Employee Finalist

Melanie Crosby Hardy, Parent Liaison, Lane Elementary School, Region 3a picture of melanie crosby hardy

Melanie’s supervisor says she is a one of a kind parent liaison. Melanie is open and responsive, making it possible for her to adapt to anything that might happen in a school day. She puts families at ease, especially first-time Kindergarten parents, and ensures they have the resources they need, including translators for parent-teacher conferences. But, Melanie is much more than a Lane parent liaison. She is a Yearbook Club volunteer, the school’s website curator, event organizer – including Lane’s 20th Anniversary celebration - school journalist, newsletter editor and sponsor of the Roots and Shoots Club. Melanie’s efforts go a long way to creating community at Lane. “She truly makes Lane a better place for everyone,” said one colleague.

2017 Outstanding School-based Hourly Employee Finalist

Aleida Goetchius, Spanish-Language Parent Liaison, West Springfield High School, Region 4a picture of aleida goetchius

Aleida is West Springfield’s bridge to its Spanish-speaking families. She hosts the school’s quarterly Hablemos meetings, ensuring students and their families are aware of school events and programs. Aleida invites alumni from her programs to speak to the families and inspire students to strive for success and pursue their postsecondary dreams. She is also a reliable resource for families in need or experiencing crises. “For many of our families, she provides stability, an ear to listen, and the skills to help provide support,” says one colleague. Her dedication and care make Aleida an integral member of the West Springfield community. It’s no wonder she was named FCPS Family and School Partnership Liaison of the Month in 2015.

2017 Outstanding School-based Hourly Employee Finalist

Miriam Pitchford, Parent Liaison, Annandale Terrace Elementary School, Region 2a picture of mariam pitchford

Mariam is a model of empathy and compassion. She will go to great lengths to help students and families at Annandale Terrace. One family, who arrived from Peru four years ago, credits Miriam for their son being accepted into Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Not only did Miriam help them understand the school system and how their children could benefit, she explained the Advanced Academics program to them. From working with colleagues and the Salvation Army to distribute more than 135 backpacks with school supplies, to keeping staff apprised of the Hispanic community’s needs, the Annandale Terrace community knows that Mariam is always in their corner.
