2021 Outstanding Secondary School New Teacher

Spanish Language Teacher
McLean High School, Region 2

Empowering Latino students to take advanced Spanish courses at McLean was Melissa’s initial goal. Her actions resulted in higher academic achievement for all McLean students across demographics and a true sense of community among students in the spirit of achievement. Through her dedication to an inclusive environment, she fosters an atmosphere in which students gain academic confidence. For them, it’s a gateway to enrollment in AP courses in addition to AP Spanish. She’s held in high esteem among her colleagues for her leadership of Spanish teams, the Equity Committee, and “Conversations.” Melissa fosters collaboration a sense of belonging among students and staff, and from this mutually beneficial relationship stems the understanding that we all play a vital role in the future of humankind.

Walking into Mr. Edwards’ classroom is an uplifting and affirming experience for both students and colleagues. Joe consistently displays a positive attitude and humorous disposition while working to create a welcoming environment where every person feels included. While many students at TSRC Alexandria enter the classroom facing numerous challenges, Mr. Edwards gives students a clean slate - treating each child with positivity, optimism, and enthusiasm. Joe works not only to cultivate positive and meaningful relationships with students, but with colleagues as well. He is always willing to lend a hand and is the first to accept advice and feedback as he continues his journey to be the most effective educator he can be.

Wherever you encounter Carli engaging her students, she is utilizing their strengths to address their individualized goals to become more independent citizens. One of Carli’s colleagues shared, “Although Carli works tirelessly to plan and implement curriculum specific to her students' needs, she makes the process seem so effortless and natural.” She demonstrates patience for giving students the space they need to experience real-world challenges in the community, while staying just close enough to support them and celebrate their successes. Another colleague added, “Carli honors all the stakeholder input when planning and delivering individualized and tailored student instruction.” She is passionate about empowering students and their families as they transition into life after FCPS.

Angela M. Perez

Angela approaches teaching with a tenacious drive for equity and inclusion. She is committed to building relationships with all of her students as individuals and knows that learning often begins after students know she cares and is invested in their success. Angela believes in making the curriculum accessible to all students while maintaining rigor and holding high expectations for learning outcomes. As a committed lifetime learner, she has embraced the challenges of the changing academic environment this year and successfully integrated new technologies and tools to adapt to virtual and hybrid instruction. Angela is devoted to contributing to and developing her collaborative team and consistently seeks opportunities for both collaboration and professional development.

Mathematics Teacher

Sarah Temple

How does a mathematics teacher become a vibrant and innovative standout to her school, her peers, and her students? This is the energy that Ms. Temple brings to her classroom every day. Her passion for math creates a world where everyone can gain an understanding of the true workings of math and move forward with a renewed idea that they can be “math people” too. Charismatic and funny, Sarah provides her students with a safe and trusted environment where math is connected to real world experiences, pushing students to think critically. In just her second year of teaching Sarah teaches honors level Precalculus and AP Statistics, as well as mentors the Math Honors Society and Math Lab.

Anson Yan
History & Social Studies Teacher
Stone Middle School, Region 5

Anson Yan

Anson begins every class by teaching the national days for that day and discussing with his students the importance of each, no matter how insignificant they might seem. He focuses his students’ learning more about the world than just what they read in history books and that the small things in life can make a big difference. Anson works to make his classroom inclusive and acknowledges the unique qualities each student brings to his class. He also leads an after school hip hop dance program to teach students about self-expression and movement, along with hip hop culture and history. It is through these endeavors that Anson strives to create a community of inclusion and growth both in and outside of the classroom.
