Traveling Through Time at the Lorton Transportation Center
Earlier this month, I traveled to the Lorton Transportation Center to meet with Dereke Tapscott, a current FCPS bus driver and a former student of mine from Herndon HS.
Dereke is carrying on his family's proud public service, established by his great-grandmother in the 1950's. Mary Marshall (above, second from right) was the first in Dereke's family to drive an FCPS school bus. She was followed by Dereke's grandaunt Brenda, and his mother Michelle. Today, FCPS is committed to bringing an equity lens to both our instruction and our hiring practices. But, we know that simply wasn't the case years ago. Dereke shared some powerful stories that serve as an important reminder of the great strides we have made, but our work must continue.
It was a pleasure to meet Dereke and to hear about his family's commitment to FCPS, and his own love of being there for our students every day.
