I recently visited with Holly DeVore, principal of Oak Hill ES, to observe how they have been closing the achievement gap for students with disabilities. We talked about the value of targeted professional development such as math lab sites and working with the Office of School Support. I was especially excited to hear about their new teacher mentoring program. Principal DeVore explained that once a month on Mondays, first and second year teachers work with more experienced teachers to observe and get feedback on ways to improve instruction. Leasley Alvarado talked about a time when she observed her mentor, Heidi Bowers, in the classroom and what she learned about guided discovery.
