Central Office

Jay Bagley, Sprague Technology Center

"Jay Bagley has gone above and beyond in his role at Desktop Management. This year, we are in a security enhanced environment, and Jay has helped us rapidly package software for teachers and students. He has spent hours (plenty were after hours) helping us get situated for the beginning of the year. Our Graphics Arts, Math and Engineering classes would not have been ready to go without his great work ethic and diligence in getting software ready and available in Software Center. Thanks for all your hard work, Jay!! The TSSpecs, SBTS, teachers and students at West Po appreciate all you do!"

Ebtesam (Sam) Ibrahim, Dranesville ES - View the Celebration!

"Ms. Sam, as my students call her, joined our school community full time post pandemic. She consistently goes above and beyond to help teachers in any way that she can even when she has a million things on her to do list. She will always offer to put her duties aside to help us get things done without hesitation. Not only is she such a tremendous part of why our building sparkles, but she is also a major reason why we all smile. Sam takes the time to get to know about us, our lives and our students. As part of a Positivity Project school and the Other People Matter Mindset, my students try very hard to impress Ms. Sam with their cleaning skills so that she doesn't have to do an ounce more. She consistently comes in to thank the students and explain just how much their kindness and responsibility means to her. They love the visits, and she knows their names! She is just a delight to be around. Her hardworking ethic is seen and appreciated by both staff and students!"

Katherine Zacur, Haycock ES - View the Celebration!

"Ms. Zacur is our daughter's special education teacher. She supported our daughter through an emotional time at school with her reading. That evening Ms. Zacur informed us as to what happened, how she supported our daughter, and some ideas of proactive strategies to implement. The days following, Ms. Zacur went out of her way to keep us abreast of our daughter's progress and well-being. We also know Ms. Zacur is covering two jobs and would like her to know we as a community, especially our family, are so grateful to have her as our child's teacher."

Annette Garrett and Kathryn DeVille, Woodley Hills ES

"Today, my wife and I attended the local screening meeting for our kindergartner. Ms. Garrett chaired the meeting, and from the very beginning, our minds were put at ease. We were incredibly impressed by the diligence, patience, and expertise shown by the team; certainly, this is a testament to the leadership of Ms. Garrett who did not make us feel rushed, listened attentively to our concerns, and reiterated that our voice mattered. We would like to express utmost gratitude to the school's LSC team for their attention to detail and level of cultural sensitivity. As older (and more experienced) parents, we felt extremely reassured that our student will be provided all services that are available to be able to meet her specific needs. Thank you, Ms. Garrett, for providing us with a thorough overview of the process!"

"Today, my wife and I attended the local screening meeting for our kindergartner. As parents with older children this was a new experience and came with great anxiety and additional stressors. We were incredibly impressed by the diligence, patience, and expertise shown by the team, and specifically in Mrs. DeVille's reassurances. Her narrative and feedback were thorough, she listened to our concerns and apprehensions, and shared her observations in a cohesive manner. We would like to express utmost gratitude to the school's LSC team for their attention to detail and level of cultural sensitivity and attention to detail."

Stephanie Broyles, Robinson SS - View the Celebration!

"During the first week of school, a student unexpectedly had two seizures on two different occasions. Ms. Broyles immediately took action, ensuring she cared for the student’s medical needs, communicated with the team to ensure next steps were in motion, and demonstrated genuine care for the student as an individual.   She approached the situation with such a sense of calm, she was a model for all staff supporting this student. It was abundantly clear Ms. Broyles had developed a relationship with the student, knew the student’s individual needs, and knew the appropriate course of action, and did not hesitate."

- Carly Zook, Robinson SS

Region 5

Jason Sachlis, Westfield HS - View the Celebration!

"Mr. Sachlis goes above and beyond for his students. As a history teacher, he is known for his challenging but interesting classes. My daughter still shares stories of things she learned in his classes, and his approach for challenging his students to learn and really develop their abilities to think. For students who know him, he's a trusted member of the Westfield HS staff, whom they can go to, to share stories and ask for advice. When other staff at Westfield sometimes struggled to recognize, respect, and honor the diversity of our student body, Mr. Sachlis reinforced to his students that all are welcome, and if turned away elsewhere in the school, his room will always be a safe space for them to visit for reflection, silence, or prayer, whichever they want or need. When he's not in the classroom, he spends a great deal of time encouraging and coaching students on the football field as well. We really appreciate all he's done for our own daughter as well as the Westfield student body."

James Bensinger, Franconia ES

"Mr. Bensinger took time on a Sunday afternoon to stop by Clermont Park and root on some of his students who play on the same baseball team. As I understand it, he had watched another student's sporting event BEFORE this game and he had plans to attend a sporting event of yet another student AFTER the baseball game. My son, who played in the game, reminded me all week that his teacher was going to be there. He was really excited and I was really impressed to see him sitting in the stands and talking to the boys afterwards. It meant a lot to us for Mr. Bensinger to go out of his way to take an interest in the things that his students do when they're not being students."

Kerri Hutchins and Kathi Sheffel, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"I am a foster parent in Fairfax County and recently received a set of 4 and 5 year old sisters into my home. I received generous guidance and support for their school enrollment from Kerri Hutchins and Kathi Sheffel in the FCPS Foster Care Liaison's Office. Their compassionate demeanor and thorough knowledge of the system was reassuring and helped me understand the process. They advocated for my foster daughters' unique needs, including a streamlined kindergarten enrollment for the older child at my son's school and an application for HeadStart for her younger sister. I am deeply grateful to the expertise and emotional support that I received from this important, but often unrecognized office. Thank you for your tireless support of these vulnerable children!"

"I can’t think of a person more deserving of this award than Jen Vieco. While I have worked with Jen for five years now, I feel so privileged to be able to see her in action on a daily basis this year. She is so attentive to the needs of the students on her caseload and they have already grown so much this year because of Jen’s guidance. Not only is she a support academically for these lucky students, she is also an emotional support to them as well. Her calming and loving demeanor are the reasons her students thrive day in and day out. She is also a fantastic sounding board and I appreciate her insights and recommendations to help meet the needs of our students. Thank you Jen for everything. The students and I appreciate you more than you know. As a student told you this morning, “you definitely deserve this.”

Cali Loewenberg, Fort Hunt ES

Jamiah Harrison, Maria Pezzuti, and Ashley Ireland, Annandale Terrace ES

"Ms. Harrison, Ms. Pezzuti and Ms. Ireland are the three AMAZING teachers that lead the ATTV (Annandale Terrace TV) morning news live each day. They work with a group of 4th and 5th graders that rotate their jobs to run the program each morning by being the anchors or the tech support. These group of students are not only successful with the support of these teachers but also teaching them to be the leaders of the student body with their special responsibilities.  ATTV news is the best way to start off each morning with the live weather report, lunch menu announcements, birthday recognitions, and any important school wide announcements. This month, as we’re celebrating the Spanish Heritage Month, Ms. Harrison has been recording short video clips of the students and staff from their Spanish speaking heritage to show on the morning news where they are from, what they love and why they are proud of their culture. As many of the students at ATES are non English Language speakers, this extra step makes students and staff excited to see who will be the special speaker that will share their culture each morning. Thank you Ms. Harrison, Ms. Pezzuti and Ms. Ireland for your dedication and celebrating the Spanish Heritage Month in a very special way! You three truly demonstrate how you deserve to be recognized for the FCPS CARES by being responsive to Culture, promoting excellence in Academics, demonstrating positive Relationships, and Enriching Experiences for ALL STUDENTS (and staff!)"

Essel Linton, Annandale Terrace ES

Brandon Robertson, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"I know you all have heard from me before regarding Brandon Robertson in OAR but I wanted to send you another email containing a reason why he is awesome. Last week, we were administering VGAs to our grade 3-6 students. Brandon and I often collaborate on testing and he gives me excellent feedback every time I have a question. Brandon made it a point to come out and visit our school to observe how we administer VGAs. He commended us on our efficiency and planning but also stepped in to help students navigate the testing platform when they were having difficulties. He also sought our feedback regarding data distribution. I am consistently impressed with his efforts (and calm demeanor) when so many schools are calling for help during these testing windows. I know you all are extremely busy so thank you for taking the time to read this. Brandon and the rest of the OAR team have empowered me to help my fellow STCs in the Langley Pyramid."

Marissa affirmed, assessed and advanced the school team's thinking around their data collection, analysis, and documentation for a strong MTSS. Thank you, Marissa, for being so inclusive and solution oriented."

He handed me a pile of Reese’s (thank you!) and was full of praise and “I love math now!” and “I’m staying after every week with Ms. Easton!” I have tears in my eyes right now. Hank Garrett, Virginia Hills Center

"Hank is incredible! He is always there with a smile and a kind word and will drop everything to help when he is needed. Today, he impressed me even more than he has already in my two months since joining the staff at Virginia Hills. I have been suffering from painful migraines over the past month and realized that the fluorescent lighting overhead is likely one of my triggers in my new office space. After sending an email to him, I was shocked to see Hank show up at my desk within minutes to assist. He quickly assessed that one of the bulbs over my desk had burnt out and required replacing, and he helped me install a blue light blocking device that is already making a difference. There is nothing better than coming to work migraine free and knowing that I will likely stay that way and be able to do the work that I love doing. Some superheroes carry ladders instead of wearing capes. Thank you, Hank Garrett!"

On our open house at the start of the school year, she lead students creating welcome signs and once again greeting new Stone families. Ms. Neun sends two to three students daily for the building wide announcements. Those students are poised and professional due to Ms. Neun's leadership. She has taken this leadership group challenge and run with it. Back to School night she was here with 30 student leaders who were wearing leadership gear, smiling and offering assistance to our parents navigating the hallways. With Ms. Neun's guidance, the students in leadership are already preparing for various activities in the building and community that foster a caring culture."

Michelle Campbell, Lorton Transportation Center

"My son is in Kindergarten and rides bus #2 with Ms. Campbell. I just wanted to thank her because I believe she is an amazing bus driver. First of all, my son was in Preschool starting in fall of 2019. Ms. Campbell would wave at my son every morning. When the pandemic hit and school continued in person again she continued to wave at him as usual. On his first day of Kindergarten, she recognized him! I find her firm but very fair putting the children's safety first! She got the kids to line up away from the curb for their safety and had Kindergarten line up first. Children need structure and organization and she is just that! I cannot thank her enough and just wanted to let her know how much my son and I appreciate her. Thank you Ms. Campbell!"

"Tracey is an amazing colleague. She is always willing to lend a hand, no matter what the task. We have seen her jump in on several initiatives lately and take on additional roles and responsibilities and she never complains, never says "it can't be done." If you ask her for assistance, she will 100% drop what she is doing to help you. Her attitude reflects her commitment and dedication to FCPS and to a job well-done. She is a terrific teammate and we are very grateful to work alongside her."

"Do you need something built? Something moved?" She's on it! She never complains about pitching in and is constantly asking what else she can do to help. That doesn't even include how she maintains the cafeteria! She keeps the students safe and happy while they're with her during her lunch break. Ms. Angie has been an amazing addition to Great Falls ES and we are so fortunate to have somebody like her on our staff."

Rosina Donaldson, West Springfield HS

"Rosie Donaldson, ADSA extraordinaire, shows that FCPS cares by being an amazing support for the Great Beginnings Summer Institute for the special education cohorts. Rosie helped us find the best rooms in the school, coordinate easy and secure access to the building, ensured that technology worked, and that ADA accommodations were easily made. Rosie generously allowed us to book many rooms at WSHS which allowed for most of the special education cohorts to be located in one place, this meant that teachers that were hired later on were able to get into the correct Summer Institute sessions more quickly and efficiently than in the past.  We couldn't have done it without you Rosie! Thank you again!"

Mark Luther, Fairfax HS

"On the first day of school, August 22, I unfortunately broke my ankle. This meant I would be out of commission for 4-6 weeks. I am nominating my ADSA, Mark Luther for the FCPS CARES award because of his hard work and leadership that he has displayed over the last 4 weeks. My accident happened at the worst possible time of the year for me but Mark immediately took the reins of the Activities Office. His leadership, ability to stay calm and level-headed, and his positive attitude allowed me to not stress about work and to spend time healing. Mark was able to immediately help coaches and teachers because of the positive relationships he had already formed with the FHS teachers and coaches. A specific example of Mark's ability to lead was this past Friday night, September 16th was our football home opener at FHS. Mark took on double duty because of my injury. He worked with coaches, students, administrators, and community members to make this event extremely successful and this was comforting for me!"

Michael Davis, Frost MS

"On August 22, the first day of school, Frost Middle School experienced an actual fire in the main office during lunch time. While others were helping to evacuate the building, Mr. Michael Davis, our Safety and Security Specialist, moved quickly to extinguish the fire. Not knowing if there were fire extinguishers in the electrical closet where the fire originated, he ran to another room and grabbed two extinguishers. He then entered the smoke-filled main office and discharged both extinguishers.  Unsure if that was enough, he found two more extinguishers, re-entered the closet and discharged those, ensuring the fire was out. Mr. Davis had to go to the hallway between emptying each of the four extinguishers, because the smoke in the main office was so heavy, it was very difficult to breathe. Mr. Davis’ quick thinking and brave actions are the reason that the fire was contained to the electrical closet and that more damage was not done to the building. He acted without pause in a dangerous situation and is surely a hero at Frost Middle School!"

Heidi Flanagan, Gatehouse Admin Center

"It is not an easy task to highlight a specific experience that stands out with Heidi because she provides excellent services every time when we asked for support. Transitioning to the central office, after spending years with schools, Heidi capitalized on her school knowledge, and supported the Office of Auditor General (OAG) with a spectrum of variety of initiatives, administering the fraud, waste, and abuse hotline, facilitating the OAG-led training opportunities for the entire FCPS (which is a major under-taking from cradle to grave. OAG provided almost 10 trainings in the past three years!), just to name a few. Heidi ensures everything happens at the right time, and the right place. Without her help, it would be easy to forget all the procedures that we need to do!  Heidi is also an employee of integrity and passion to support the mission of OAG. To encourage a caring culture, Heidi will think of a creative welcoming questions, every time at our staff meeting, "Which of the five senses would  you say is your strongest?" "What has someone borrowed but never given back?" "Words can't express how grateful we are for Jen's support as we started the school year. Jen jumped in immediately and shared her expertise to prepare materials, connect new teachers to resources, organize classrooms, and coach the members of our team. Not only did she work  with one particular classroom until the teacher came on board, but she also participated in our school-wide training and team-building opportunities. I know it wasn't easy to step away from her current job responsibilities to help us get started, but she did so with a ready smile and a "can-do" attitude. Our students and staff are off to a great start because Jen gave so much of her time, energy, and encouragement."

Troy Newlon, Graham Road ES

"I reached out to Troy, Student Information Assistant, this past summer to ask for his help in supporting a family dealing with complex stressors getting two children enrolled. His caring, expertise, and warmth made all the difference. I am beyond grateful for the kindness he brings to his job and the sensitivity he has toward all families. In addition, I had just started my own job, so he took time to explain the process of registration to me and walk me through how he could help the family. Thank you, Troy!"

While he finds some days challenging, he is committed to changing his students lives for the better. He will accept nothing short of them becoming the best version of themselves. Not only is Mr. Harris teaching core values, he requires his students to show how these impact their own day to day lives. Mr. Harris not only spends GOLD afternoons with his class, he seeks them out individually EVERY morning either before school or during 1st or 2nd period. Arman Nikmorad and Philippe Cloutier, Sprague Technology Center

"Thank you Arman Nikmorad and Philippe Cloutier from Integrated Digital Technology Services (IDTS) as you worked incredibly hard to ensure FCPS offered an excellent experience for one of the first Community Conversation with Dr. Reid! This was a cutting edge opportunity as we had a hybrid format, it was critical that the sound and virtual experience would be as strong as possible. Both Arman and Philippe went to great length to cover all the details. It was also noted that both gentleman had to wrap up the equipment in about 80 heat as the AC went off at our facility, then they loaded their truck and had to get back to 'the shop' to ensure the material was properly returned. Thank you both for your positive attitude and clever and quick thinking to ensure this was a top-notch experience for everyone!"

Additionally, Ms. Curtis helped problem solve the school community so that everything was in place for the event, including materials to help with child care. "Ms. Holloway is a SPED teacher and Case Manager that normally has a full load. In spite of this, she stepped up to organize and administer the Math Inventory to her students as well as another teacher's. Her positive attitude and willingness to cover another class during a time of need shows she cares."

Carolina Dotel, Falls Church HS

"Carolina and I just became suit mates; her office is directly across from mine. Carolina is our parent Liaison.   She answered a call one day and it was a student who was belligerent, loud, rude, and offensive. Carolina handled the call with the upmost grace, love, and attention despite how she was being talked too. I never knew how much her job involved, but I do have a newly found respect for her! She is a saint!"

"While many children are fortunate to have Mrs. Kurtz as a classroom teacher at Lynbrook Elementary, my daughter is blessed to have her as a reading tutor. Mrs. Kurtz goes above and beyond to get to know my child’s interests, strengths, and needs. She plans engaging and responsive lessons that meet my daughter where she is and take her the next step forward. Mrs. Kurtz has helped her build confidence, discover favorite characters and books, and make progress in both reading and writing. Going to read with “Ms. Nanci” is a time she looks forward to, and for that I am eternally grateful!"

Scott Dreier, Nick See, and Semeul Hackett, Sprague Technology Center

"The beginning of the year can be a stressful technology experience in general. Add to that new laptops for teachers at a giant Secondary School, plus network challenges, and it's overwhelming. Our TSPECs are amazing. They are always calm, polite, explain things extremely well and are always patient with all students and staff. They never seem bothered when we interrupt them a million times a day. We could not function without you all!"

Karla Santos and Juanita Rogers, Twain MS

"Karla Santos and Juanita Rogers joined the Twain family in December 2021, and quickly became the dynamic duo. They strive daily to the meet the demanding needs of a busy office, triaging everyone’s needs on the phone and in person, while following safety protocols. The myriad of tasks they complete includes greeting visitors, checking in/out students, answering phones, helping teachers, and filling in when called upon. They have a can do and will attitude and get it all done with a calm and gentle demeanor. Recently, they both helped our families that were not able to attend our Tiger Fest event (Orientation) fill out forms to ensure our students would have a schedule and locker. Even with the high volume of families coming in, they made sure each visitor got the quality of care and attention needed to feel valued and included in the process. Overall, Karla and Juanita's positive attitudes, helpful approach, and ability to take on new challenges serves as the catalyst that creates a vibrant and welcoming environment that permeates the entire Twain community. They have formed and maintained warm, respectful, relationship with students, staff, families, and other members of the Twain community. Twain is very fortunate to have Karla and Juanita as the faces of Twain, always ready to extend a friendly warm welcome to FCPS students and families!"
