Michele Arnold, Cindy Fitzgerald, Shawntal Miner, Delores Herndon, Sherri Burris, Toni Tate, Kevin Sills – Human Resources

"My HR colleagues in Equity and Employee Relations (EER–Michele Arnold, Brenda Bryant (family member), Cindy Fitzgerald, Shawntal Miner, Delores Herndon, Mansa Herndon (family member), Sherri Burris, Toni Tate, and Kevin Sills. On Sunday, September 10th a group of staff and family participated in the AARP Meal Pack Challenge on the National Mall.  AARP’s goal at the DC event was to pack 1.5 million meals for needy seniors across the country. The overall goal for the entire event was to pack 3 million meals. The Washington, DC event was the last of four held across the country. By the time EER had finished their shift at 1:00 pm, they had packed over 400,000 meals. What a wonderful way to support our community."

Region 1

Kyung Kim, Crossfield ES

"Kyung(Charlie) Kim always goes the extra mile at Crossfield because he really cares. This morning one of our kindergarten students was dropped off at our Kiss & Ride at least 15 minutes after school had already started. The parent dropped the student off to walk up the side walk alone. No one was outside of the building. Charlie was setting up in the cafeteria and noticed the student walking alone so he ran outside to escort the student in the building and check him safely in at our office. This is just one of many things Charlie does above and beyond his regular duties. He is one in a million and we are so lucky to have him as part of our school team."

- Janet George, Crossfield ES

---------

Region 2

Lauri Prather, Shrevewood ES

"Mrs. Prather is a new addition to the Shrevewood community this year...but has already gone out of her way to reach out to connect with parents and students at our school. During Back-to-School Night, she was circulating outside among the crowd and introducing herself as parents waited for the doors to open. And the following week, while I was in the copy room, I heard a friendly voice just outside the door greeting Kindergarten, first, and second-grade students by name as they entered their hall. I popped my head out of the room and saw that it was Mrs. Prather who was offering the cheerful greetings: "Welcome to school this morning," and "So good to see you!" It was only the second week of school and she was calling children by name and even asking students who she had not yet met to tell her their names so that she could address them personally the next time she saw them. What a special way to start the school morning and the school year! She clearly loves her job and is seeking to make a positive difference in the lives of our children! Thank you, Mrs. Prather!"

Region 3

Janet Dougherty, Garfield ES

"Janet extends above and beyond for students, staff, and families. She always puts others needs above her own.  Janet will drop whatever she might be doing to support students and staff in need. Making a visit to a home to support families, by delivering meals, holiday gifts, or just to check to see how a student is doing, is a common practice for Janet. She never seeks recognition, yet she is someone who deserves it the most! The kids always have a beaming smile across their face when they see her, and know she is a safe and welcoming person they can turn to. She is present at morning arrival and dismissal to greet students. We are quite a lucky school to have someone who cares so much about the Garfield community and staff. She is certainly, one of a kind!"

- Ashley Younger, Garfield ES

---------

Region 4 (Pictured)

Jane Gordon, Lake Braddock SS

"As a teacher of American history, Jane exemplifies what it means for educators to connect what is happening in the world outside of school to what happens in the classroom. She mobilized the Lake Braddock School community to donate their time and much-needed goods to help victims of the recent Hurricanes. At the same time, through service learning, her work taught students how their collective actions will make a meaningful difference to others in our nation during a period when the support is so very critical."

- Lisa Williams, Lake Braddock SS

---------

Region 5

Christine Kawchak, London Towne ES

"Mrs. Kawchak is an exceptional teacher that deserves recognition. She goes above and beyond for her students. She acquired a grant to purchase fish for her classroom, which she will be using to teach science. She constantly purchases things for her classroom (from her pocket) to enhance the learning experience. Through email and video, Mrs. K is in constant communication with the parents, keeping them in the loop with what she's teaching and how they're learning. She volunteers at school events, which makes children extra excited to go. I love that she challenges the children's minds, keeping them thinking and questioning. She also provides incentives to boost their effort. You can always tell she's happy to learn from, listen to and lead her students, which makes her an amazing teacher!"

- Kristine Rosario, London Towne ES

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jose Rios, Sideburn Support Center

"Mr. Rios came to my room to help with a temperature issue. He took the time to explain the system and how it was adversely affecting my room. He also looked deeper and checked what the temperature of my room was set to in the computer system and was able to troubleshoot so that we could lower the temperature that activates the heat. Jose also helped my colleague in the room next door and fixed a vent that was falling off of her ceiling without even being asked. He was very patient, professional, and kind. Thank you!"

- Tracy Cousino, London Towne ES

---------

Sarah Lung, Canterbury Woods ES

"I would like to recognize Mrs. Lung for all her efforts with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at Barnsley Elementary School. When my son first attended Barnsley as a transfer in the fourth grade, Mrs. Lung made him feel welcome and at home from day one, which is hard for any student that young switching schools, let alone a deaf student.  Mrs. Lung's interaction with all her students shows that she cares for them above all else, and commits herself to helping them however she can."

Words can't express my gratitude towards Mr. Curtis.  This is just a quick note to thank him  for his extra efforts and for going above and beyond the call of duty. He is efficient, professional, and responds timely in his interactions with me and with everybody that calls him. It's always tough to respond and complete all warehouse projects, but whatever he does it's done with a smile and extra care. Employees like Mr. Curtis are rare to find and are the ones making FCPS shine! Thank you, Mr. Curtis, for a job well done!!

- Joanna Copeland, West Potomac HS

---------

Bridget Healey, Frost MS

"Bridget has gone above and beyond this year by leading one of our School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) subcommittees. She helped guide our staff in refining our approach to school-wide literacy. The shift from content literacy to disciplinary literacy could have been quite difficult, but because of her leadership, open-mindedness, relationship with staff, effective communication skills, and passion for doing what's right for kids it has been a smooth transition."

- Melanie Porter, Frost MS

---------

Matthew Bower, Frost MS

"Mr. Bower goes above and beyond for his students, families, and colleagues. He has influenced our entire school in a positive way as a member of the Frost Middle School Counsel. Because of a standing practice his team has of sending positive emails to parents about students, all members of Frost interdisciplinary teams have committed to recognizing students in a meaningful way this school year. He is an asset to his CLT (Collaborative Learning Team) by helping to focus their conversations on Best Practices and what is best for kids. Additionally, he provides fun and engaging learning opportunities for students through authentic academic tasks that reflect how experts in the discipline actually read, write, discuss, and think."

- Melanie Porter, Frost MS

---------

Tori Meleski, Colvin Run ES

"Tori is amazing! She is an amazing mentor that just never quits. This is my third year as an SBTS and I can still count on her to answer questions and advise me on just about anything. She has particularly busy helping me this week, and I just want everyone to know how much I appreciate her support."

- Emily Phelan, Flint Hill ES

---------

Ryan Richardson, Centreville HS

"Ryan is always finding ways to help me help the department.  He is doing a wonderful job as CLT lead for World History II HN, and is a huge asset on the AP Psychology team. He also led a school-wide professional development session on Google Classrooms."

- Anthony Hanrahan, Centreville HS

---------

Bridget Lynch, TSRC Fairfax

"Bridget continually goes above and beyond for the students assigned to TSRC Fairfax. She has taken on the role of confidant and support and is regularly named as an ACE for our students. She is a caring adult who has high expectations for our learners and helps get them ready to learn."

- David Penland, TSRC Fairfax

---------

- Joe Berret, Frost MS

---------

Cosette Loach, Frost MS

"Cosette is in charge of our morning news program and always goes out of her way to assist staff members with announcements or special events, even when it's an inconvenience to her (and of course she never complains!)."

- Joe Berret, Frost MS

---------

James Stickley, Sprague Technology Center

"Jim Stickley is a Senior TSPEC charged with, among other responsibilities, finding the best and brightest technology specialists for schools. He did just that for South County High School - but much more. South County lost our long serving and very talented TSPEC to a promotion (we were very excited for him). But, that left a very big hole. From the time we learned of the vacancy, Jim was on the case and he kept us informed the whole way. Because of his dedication and hard work, Jim was able to find us a superstar TSPEC, just as talented and dedicated as the guy we lost, within just two days. Our faculty and staff has seen no decrease in service. The transition has been seamless. Further, Jim created a transition plan for the school our new TSPEC came from, so they aren't losing any service either. Clearly, Jim's eye for recruiting and training talented TSPECs has made this entire process go smoothly for all involved."

- Matthew Ragone, South County HS

---------

Justina Copeland, TSRC Bryant

"Justina has gone above and beyond to create an environment where a particular student with significant challenges will feel comfortable attending school. From her frequent 1:1 interaction with this student both last year and this year to her exceptional communication, collaboration, and partnership with the student's mother to her reflections about ways to engage and re-engage, Justina is a model for the power of non-traditional environments and stellar teaching."

- Jennifer Knox, Willow Oaks

---------

Sally Smallwood, Willow Oaks

"Sally, What an amazing person you are!  Thank you for taking the time to help five of our colleagues. Three of them had never ridden a bike and you taught them how to ride a bicycle. The other two were hesitant on a bike and you helped to strengthen their bicycle skills. You were patient and showed kindness to each one of them. Thank you for taking the time and for your willingness to teach them. YOU ROCK!"

Thank you so much for helping FCPS to serve all of our students more successfully!"

- Tiffany Hagen, Terra Centre ES

---------

Christina Nunez, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Christina is always quick to respond and always positive even when there is change. When booking a room at Gatehouse for mid-April, I noticed that Christina had an hour booked for another meeting. When I reached out to her and asked if she was able to move her meeting to a different room, she was quick to respond with yes! She acted quickly making the entire experience seem seamless. Once she had her confirmation from property management, she followed up with me a 2nd time to reconfirm. Christina always goes above and beyond with a smile!"

- Nancy Bloomfield, Sunrise Valley ES

---------

Mike Elion, Annandale HS

"Mike is our go-to guy for tech solutions. Our printers are reliable, our Smartboards are fixed quickly, and our accounts are managed flawlessly. But he goes beyond the regular duties of a Tech Specialist. Mike goes out of his way to make sure people are comfortable with their technology, and this includes the 2,200 students he has supplied with a computer. But most of all, he laughs with you and not at you, when you make a mistake. This relaxed, friendly attitude is what helps to make everyone comfortable as we integrate more and more technology into our classrooms."

- Jennifer Cory, Annandale HS

---------

Silverbrook ES Staff

"There is a Silverbrook family in which the father has been battling cancer for two years. The family has 5 children, 3 of which are at Silverbrook. The Sunday before school started, Dr. Macken sent an email to her staff asking them to all wear their Team A shirts to support the family. The support was overwhelming. The father passed that morning just after his youngest went off to pre-school. The tremendous support the Silverbrook family has shown for this family makes me proud that my son is to a SeaHawk!"

- Brittany Owens, Woodson HS

---------

Ellie Kirschenbaum, TSRC South Lakes

"Ellie has gone above and beyond this year to build a warm, welcoming, academically engaging environment for her students. She and her teammate have been relentless when it comes to parent contact and showing concern for students in their program. She knows that all students are capable of success and her determination to tailor instruction to meet individual student needs is unsurpassed."

- Carey Williams, Willow Oaks

---------

Lisa Nobles, South Lakes HS

"I don't know how Lisa has time to prep and teach her own classes because she is tirelessly helping others during the school day. She drops everything any time a teacher, student or parent needs her. She has called home to reach parents in Spanish for other teachers, sat in on meetings to help translate and assists in registering new students. She works to find solutions to students' problems getting services they could use and teachers' trouble accessing and implementing technology. She is a sounding board with an endless array of helpful advice for any teacher working with ELs in their classes. Parents seek her out, students sing her praises even years later and, for every teacher in her department, she is a leader and a friend. She delivers all this with a smile each and everyday. Lisa is a real treasure in the South Lakes community."

- Jennifer Burns, South Lakes HS

---------

Matt Satchell, Oakton HS

"Matt Satchell can be seen taking time out of his day to go above and beyond to help the staff and students at Oakton High School at any given day. As our Building Supervisor he is often the first one in the building at the last one to leave, 6 days a week. As a manager, Matt values and respects all of his staff and promotes fairness and equality. He makes connections with students and making people feel welcome comes naturally to him. Any request made of him, he responds immediately and if he doesn't have an answer, he always seeks out a solution. There is absolutely no doubt that Oakton High School would not run the way it does with out Matt! Thank you for everything you do and always putting a smile on my face!"

- Sascha Reed, Oakton HS

---------

Tina Skorski, Weyanoke ES

"In her time at Weyanoke, Tina has consistently gone above and beyond her calling as a counselor. This month she has proven that she cares about the most marginalized and disenfranchised students at Weyanoke through her personal and consistent outreach to one of the first grade students whose family situation has turned dire. She is not only a model counselor, Tina is also an impressive human being that challenges us to go beyond our calling as educators to care for those who are in desperate need of advocacy."

Lake Braddock is lucky to have her!"

- Tony DiBari, Lake Braddock SS

---------

Meghan Ehrman, Terraset ES

"We are so pleased to see how enthusiastic our son has been about his class this year. He talks daily about how enjoyable school is for him, of which we know Mrs. Ehrman has played a significant part. This afternoon, out of the blue, he told us that he really enjoys Mrs. Erhman because she makes "learning fun with lots of interesting projects", and he proceeded to talk about what he has been learning in class (metric Olympics with awards, floating bears, lizard slinging contest, time capsules, student presentations with powerpoint). We have not seen this type of enthusiasm out of our son for some time, and feel so grateful to Mrs. Erhman for re-igniting this fire of excitement in our child. Furthermore, as parents, we have enjoyed getting periodic class updates from Mrs. Erhman on what the class has been doing as this has helped us have meaningful discussions with our child about his class. Thank you so much for your outstanding work!"

- A Terraset ES parent

---------

She shows an interest in their lives and families and is a positive adult presence in the building as well as the lives of our students. Sofia demonstrates every day that FCPS Cares.

"Even though I am a new staff member, I can honestly say that I'm grateful to come to the music classes that both Mrs. Shealy and Mrs. Hibbitts have for our Enhanced Autism program at Fort Hunt. We have music three days a week, and in those three days, it's so priceless to see the kids' faces lit up and smile with joy every time they go to music class. I can never stop smiling because seeing the kids so happy and excited about music gives me joy. Mrs. Shealy and Mrs. Hibbitts are wonderful with the kids, and I am forever grateful for meeting them and seeing the wonders they've done for these kids, because they have so much potentials and I can see that every time we go to music."

Robin Jackson, Gatehouse Administration Center

"I have been trying for more than a month to get copies of specific documents. I had contacted multiple people in both salary services and HR on several occasions, but had been told the documents were not able to be obtained. I called HR once again on 9/11/17, and spoke with Robin Jackson who took it upon herself to find a solution where no one else could.  She kept in contact with me over the next couple of says while she worked whatever magic was necessary to be able to produce the documents I needed. Late yesterday, Robin emailed me with the exact information I had been working for weeks to get. I *so* appreciate that Robin took the time and put in the effort to help me in this situation.  I am so grateful for her willingness to 'think outside the box,' look for new and different alternatives, and work diligently to come up with a workable solution on my behalf."

Michael Dobbs, South Lakes HS

"During the busy week before school started, Michael devoted hours of time and effort to solving the problem of installing the new versions of ESRI ArcGIS software at our school. Over summer 2017 ESRI switched licensing from Virginia state based, to school based. Complete confusion, from James Madison University's Geospatial Semester program directors to the teachers at every high school in Virginia ensued. Michael remained calm, cool, and cordial throughout his communications with Charlie Fitzpatrick, Education Director for ESRI and with ESRI's technical and licensing support personnel. At the end of it all Michael completely solved the software licensing and installation challenges for everyone - for educators and school districts across the entire state of Virginia (though most will never know). Just last night a JMU professor who visits schools to support Geospatial Semester teachers and students asked me to forward Michael's email with the instructions he documented and shared within our district, to JMU, and to Charlie Fitzpatrick. Michael's talents and dedication were demonstrated by going so far beyond what is expected. He literally saved the Geospatial Analysis classes / Geospatial Semester program. We and schools across Virginia would likely still be trying to solve the software installation and licensing issue if not for Michael."

Terri Pendleton, Sprague Center

"Since I started in Field Services as a supervisor back in March, Terri has been wonderful in assisting to create an automated PDF report in Remedy that is emailed to me daily with the previous day's count on closed tickets by my field technicians. This has reduced a lot of manual time it would take me to pull individual reports each day on my techs. She worked on this and made time in her schedule to test this out and after a few weeks provided a finished report that all the supervisors in Field Services can access for their team's daily data. Terri also came out on site to personally test and assist me when my techs were experiencing an issue on their new laptops with the Remedy application and the Win10 OS. After some data collecting, testing, and working with some other colleagues, it was determined that the browser version for Internet Explorer needed to be updated in the image package for Win10. She communicated and followed up with me along the way to advise what the fix was so I could share with me team.  She is a pleasure to work with and has gone above and beyond here on multiple occasions. She is very deserving of an FCPS Cares award and recognition. Thank you Terri!"

Katy Harvey, Cherry Run ES

"Katy is the part-time SBTS at our school. She always does amazing things to support classroom teachers and our school with technology. However, these first few weeks of school she has truly gone above and beyond! We were not a pilot school for the Universal Screener, so this is our first experience with the entire system. Katy was able to get all of our grade levels up and running and we have already begun having our students work on the diagnostic assessments. Having the data this early is beyond beneficial for instructional planning! While I am sure many other SBTS have done the same and have supported their teachers with the initial set up, I am certain most if not all have done so under the same circumstances that Katy has. At Cherry Run, we are mid-way through a full renovation. Between when we all returned and the end of August, Katy needed to create and set up 2 computer labs from scratch. She was trained on IReady basics, and trained the staff. She was then able to ensure all students had set and tested their new passwords and were completely prepared to begin the diagnostic assessments by September 11 (for those of us who teach primary, just helping the students with the new password creation alone was a full task)! She showed us how to prepare students, and has been in the computer labs to support the teachers as we have the students take the assessments. She truly is our own Wonder Woman! The teachers, staff, and students are so unbelievably fortunate to have her!"

Additionally, the budget document is submitted to an awards program to recognize school districts that demonstrate proficiency in creating clear, sound budgets. Julie was instrumental in assisting budget staff with the publication of the budget document which allowed the document to be posted for our stakeholders and submitted for the budget awards program. She was incredibly helpful and willing to assist in any way possible. I cannot thank her enough for her time and support during a critical time in the Budget Office."

Jeanne Kelly, Falls Church HS

"Jeanne Kelly is such an amazing activities director. She is someone who always goes above and beyond for us coaches and our athletes. It is always nice when she is able to take time out of her busy schedule to come to a cheerleading practice and every competition and always give the athletes encouraging words. We thank you for everything you do for the Falls Church High School cheerleading program."

Brian Shields, Cardinal Forest ES

"Brian is an amazing and supportive Lead Mentor at Cardinal Forest.  He hand wrote invitations to the School Orientation to each new staff member. He planned a productive agenda that allowed for new staff members to begin to learn about the culture of CFES. Brian has worked with Admin to carefully match the teachers with Mentors or Buddies that will support personnel throughout the year. Brian is dedicated to ensuring that these new staff members know his door is open. Thank you, Brian!"

Merari Zemany and the Field Custodial Staff, Sideburn Support Center

"Merari and her custodial team were instrumental in making certain that Cardinal Forest ES was ready for teachers and students who returned.  There was a team of custodians there were temporarily assigned to CFES to help get the classrooms clean and floors waxed. We only had one custodian for the summer and the field custodians helped fill in for day shift and night shift to keep the cleaning process going.  We made it to the finish line. Thank you, Merari, for sending your team to help!"

Jorge Gamarra, Sideburn Support Center

"The super service Jorge Gamarra has provided to Cardinal Forest ES began in late June, however it has continued to date.  Jorge has been an outstanding collaborator with administration when faced with summer cleaning Cardinal Forest ES  with only one custodian.  He coordinated a plan with Field Custodial Services to schedule a team to staff morning and evening shifts. In order to begin to create a new team, Jorge reviewed resumes, conducted interviews with Admin and made recommendations as new staff was hired.  Jorge has worked with the new leadership team, provided training, monitored the cleaning outcomes with inspections, and has continuously communicated the progress towards the goal of preparing the school to welcome Teachers on August 21, 2017 and the students and families for Open House on August 25, 2017.  Mission accomplished!  Jorge continues to support the new team with training about work efficiency and FCPS cleaning expectations. Jorge Gamarra is a consummate professional and has been able to connect with our custodial team in ways that help them know that they have a caring, knowledgeable Monitor who is willing to do what it takes to make FCPS schools the cleanest, most beautiful spaces in the community. Thank you, Jorge Gamarra, for your commitment to helping CFES build a new custodial team and for creating a plan for the team to be on a path for delivering a consistently clean and healthy school for students, staff, and the community."

Judd Quinio, Willow Oaks

"Judd has been essential to the roll out of our full school one-to-one program. In addition to the behind the scenes planning and support. He arrived early Monday morning to help distribute 1,300 laptops. Thanks to his support, every single AHS student started their first day of school with their own laptop!"

Laurie Armstrong, Centreville HS

Laurie Armstrong is an invaluable asset to Centreville High School. She is the first person I think to ask when I have any kind of question about how our high school runs, and she always knows the answer. She is kind, thoughtful, and generous with her time and her energy.  Our library wouldn't run without her brilliant attention to detail, and students adore her. Centreville is a better place because she's part of it!

- Sarah Pevner, Centreville HS

Holly Patrick, Centreville HS

"Holly Patrick is a thoughtful, committed and responsive SBTS. Working with her has given me an even greater appreciation for those people in education who have job responsibilities that almost entirely fall under the "other duties as assigned" category. Our school wouldn't run nearly as smoothly without her, and we're all so thankful for her tireless work and her generous good nature."

Dwayne Beaty, Woodson Annex

"Dwayne has been and continues to be, a stellar example of what an FCPS employee should be.  He has a positive attitude, is always able to help or solve a problem, and is a willing and able to lend a hand whenever asked. He was able to procure and solve a power problem that I have been puzzling over for more than 1 year.  We worked together to spec out what was needed, he worked with his supervisor, Matt Fry, to procure what was needed.  With but a moments notice, helped me lift a 200 pound UPS into place without batting an eye.  I will strive in my daily dealings with other in FCPS staff to emulate Dwayne Beaty's attitude."

Katie Wigenton, Stonecroft Transportation

"Mrs. Wigenton has met and collaborated with Liberty administrators to provide a workable, safe schedule for students to disembark from buses. Students have a good start to their day by not having to wait an inordinate time in buses in morning. They also have a safe beginning to the day because she has worked with the school to drop off students once teachers have arrived. Students will have just the right amount of time to safely get to their first period class. Thank you, Mrs. Wigenton! Liberty Middle School appreciates you!"
