FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Anh Phung, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Anh staffed a special welcome reception we held in honor of Dr. Brabrand. It was unusual to hold an event on a Sunday afternoon and we had a tight time-frame in which to set up for the reception for more than 100 PTA officers and elected officials. Anh became one of our team, and enhanced our event with suggestions for decorations, table placement, and music. She saved our volunteers work by washing their dishes so they could take them home. She stayed a step ahead of us and thought of additional ideas that would make the day special. I would love to work with her again."

Sharri Clifford, Rachel Carson MS (view a write-up from her celebration)

"Sharri Clifford is the exemplary teacher. She is a role model for all teachers. She is the department chair, mentor, colleague, and friend to all. Currently, she is yet again working many hours beyond her teaching responsibilities to plan and organize our school's Veteran's Day event, where veterans of all ages and experiences come to our school and share their experiences with the students. This event is a whole building affair and all students get a chance to hear from two or three veterans. Sharri is spearheading this event so that no are the veterans of our community honored and receive appreciation for their service, but to also bring the real world authentic experiences to our students. Sharri is definitely deserving of the FCPS Cares recognition because she cares for all our students, our school and staff, and the community. It is difficult to say thanks to someone who does so much and I hope the possibility of this award brings a smile to her face and so that she knows how much we love and appreciate her."

Becky Corallo, J.E.B. Stuart HS (Pictured)

"Mrs. Corallo is my daughter's Strategies teacher and I couldn't be more thankful to have her in that class. Mrs. Corallo goes beyond any call of duty and is always trying to help our population. Mrs. Corallo started a program that collects all the unwrapped food in the cafeteria, saves it in two refrigerators (that she got) and has it distributed to the students to take home on Friday. This not only allows most of their families to have food for the weekend but also prevents the amount of waste generated at the cafeteria. She also helped bring the MAP clinic (with the Nursing students from George Mason University) to Stuart, twice a year, so the students that can't afford physicals would be able to participate in the school sports. She helps to fill the free and reduced lunch forms and make sure that they have been sent to the Food and Nutrition Services. Mrs. Corallo makes her instruction time very accessible and engaging to all of her students, independently of where they come from. I would like to thank her for all her work with the Hispanic population, we all appreciate her patience and wisdom helping our students."

Tom Fitzpatrick, Fort Hunt ES

"I wanted to acknowledge Mr. Fitzpatrick and how he went out of his way to make our daughter feel special. On the evening of October 2nd our daughter Hayden, a third grader at Fort Hunt Elementary, was nervously preparing for her first surgery the following day. The Principal, Mr. Fitzpatrick, took time to call her and wish her well and reassured her that everything would turn out fine and that having your tonsils and adenoids removed is a good thing. Needless to say she was very excited that the Principal would call her and my husband and I were equally impressed. In addition, during her recovery, Mr. Fitzpatrick came to the house to visit and brought her the only thing she could eat – her favorite homemade chocolate frozen custard from The Dairy Godmother. Thank you for caring, Mr. Fitzpatrick!"

- Leslie Maniglia, Fort Hunt ES

Region 4

Bill Burke, Centreville HS

"My son is a former student of Bill Burke's and recently made this statement: "Music has been a huge influence in my life along with my mom and other family. But music takes me to my happy place and relaxes me and gets some pinned up anger out even sometimes. Learning how to play the guitar and a couple of other instruments was one of the greatest decisions I have ever made. When I had to drop my guitar class in school it was hard because of complications with my wrist. But I still play the guitar and listen to music all the time. One of the greatest things I learned in my 3.5 years of guitar was that music makes family and helps everyone in some way just not everyone knows it yet. MUSIC IS MY BEST FRIEND!!!!!!" Thanks, Bill, for helping my son feel welcome and that he has family in school as well. You rock ... in more ways than one!"

Region 5

Amielia Mitchell, Stone MS

"I am writing as both an FCPS employee and a FCPS parent in praise of Stone Middle School principal, Amielia Mitchell. She is creating a climate at Stone that not only encourages dreaming big, but also follows through on showing the way to achieving those dreams. In the past month, my 8th grade daughter has attended two extracurricular programs that Mrs. Mitchell sponsored. The first, was a professional conference about modern technology ideas and applications that included representatives from leading companies. The second one – today - is a workshop sponsored by Capital One in which students work with industry professionals to learn how to create apps. Through Mrs. Mitchell’s efforts, these conferences were free and open to any student. This morning Mrs. Mitchell was at Stone before sunup greeting each participant, who then boarded the FCPS bus that she provided so the kids could get to the workshop. She attended each conference  - both on Saturdays - with her students. As Stone’s leader, it’s clear that Mrs. Mitchell’s mission is for the students 100%. She seeks out situations that allow our kids to see what achievement in the real world looks like, and how to make it happen. I am extremely grateful for her leadership."

Amanda Morrow Badar, Gatehouse Administration Center

"I first met Amanda back in May of this year when she invited our company to participate in the Pilot Financial Wellness Seminar on 6/13/17.  From the very beginning, I gleaned her dedication and excitement about helping as many FCPS employees as possible in many ways, and specifically through this first seminar and hopefully others. It was my joy and privilege to participate in that first Financial Wellness Seminar.  Amanda did an awesome job then and at the Retirement Planning one held on 10/30/2017. I want to recognize her here for all that she did logistically to promote both, to make them happen, to kick them off with her introductory remarks; and for all of her astute interjections during the discussions. It was awesome to see the level of participation and both sessions were very interactive and engaging with the employees asking so many insightful and earnest questions. I could see how the attendees reacted positively and gratefully to Amanda's recommendations and responses to their questions as they presented their specific challenges or difficulties that prevent them from focusing on budgeting, saving and financial wellness as a whole. Amanda's coordination and leadership, pre-planning, etc. and very helpful moderation throughout both these sessions are acknowledged and so very appreciated. She demonstrates that she totally subscribes to the "FCPS Cares" mantra. Both of these seminars and the EAP as a whole are evidence that FCPS cares and wants to support their employees with resources and solutions that are readily available to them. We have Amanda to thank for getting this message out loud and clearly as she epitomizes it through her sincere efforts and her effectiveness in her role. I know I as an outsider was not aware of how the EAP functioned at FCPS and what a great benefit it is. Thank you, Amanda for all you do as EAP Specialist "par excellence". I know this is long and it was my pleasure to spend a moment to post this. Amanda deserves it!"

Eric Shaver, Juvenile Detention Center

"It takes that special leader and the right person to light that fire and lead the staff members at JDC, and that is Eric Shaver. You inspire teachers and students to raise expectations for themselves and never give up on them, no matter how challenging it might be. As I have worked with you and your teachers, I have learned a lot from our reflective conversations. You have created an air of connectedness that any visitor can sense immediately. I refer JDC as “a community of caring.” You are accessible, you listen, reflect, and you continue to strive to want JDC to be a better place. Thank you for all you do and I enjoy working with the JDC staff."

Sean McCormally, South County HS

"I truly wish to nominate my co-worker of almost 14 years who, as an IA, I have worked. I have worked with good and even great teachers but, none to his caliber. As an Exceptional Ed Chemistry teacher he goes out of his way to not only understand every child's disability but also help in other courses, he is there for counseling, and has a knack for teaching in a way individuals can learn. Today I saw him do something that made me remember the nominations, he was breaking down the atom to a student and explained the different parts as vocals in choir. The Protons as sopranos that always sing the high notes so they can never change. The Altos as electrons and Tenors as neutrons. It was incredible how the student understood and how much he understood the student."

- anonymous co-worker

---------

Alicia Grande, Stuart HS

"College application season is stressful for both parents and students! Ms. Grande consistently has gone above and beyond to support our student and us, to ensure we have the information to successfully complete (admissions & aid) applications fully and on time. She responds to late night cries for help (often within minutes), stays late/meets early, and calls college admissions reps to investigate questions and unusual situations. Each student, college, and circumstance is unique; Ms. Grande handles them all with compassion, honesty, and speed! Thank you!"

- Tara Rethore, Stuart HS

---------

Jaimee Brown, Kings Park ES

"From the moment we met her at Open House, I knew there was something special about Mrs. Brown. She sent each student home with a special envelope that they were instructed not to open until the night before school. When we opened it, there was a poem and some special magic glitter to help ease back-to-school worries - something that my child really appreciated. The first day, my child announced that she “loved 1st grade,” and has maintained that attitude since then. She excitedly talks about the projects they work on, from exploring nature to writing lab to math boxes. I think I heard more about the first week’s activities in 1st grade than I did for all of preschool and kindergarten combined. This level of enthusiasm is new for my child and I attribute it to Mrs. Brown. Her caring nature, love for reading, and level of communication has impressed me. Thank you, Mrs. Brown!"

- A Kings Park ES parent

---------

Kara Anderson, Stratford Landing ES

"Mrs. Anderson works daily to make sure the needs of all students and staff are met. From shopping for shoes and clothes for those in need in the school community to hosting social gatherings for staff to build camaraderie, Mrs. Anderson always tirelessly works to give 100% of herself 100% of the time."

"Thank you Ms. Gaston for presenting for Career and Transition Services (CTS) at our post-secondary coffee and at FCPS college night. We are grateful for your willingness to share your time and expertise on post secondary education for students with disabilities. - Sarah Blake, Willow Oaks

---------

Erin Azero, Colin Powell ES

"Mrs. Azero has given my child enough confidence to present to the class about himself (being the MVP of the week).  He originally said he didn't want to do it, probably because he has a low self-esteem. However, he agreed to present because Mrs. Azero has made him feel "at home" in class.  She has gone out of her way to be sure he is happy. Thank you, Mrs. Azero!"

Kori Coleman, Laurel Hill ES

"Kori Coleman is one of the guidance counselors at our school and every single day she makes herself available to support every teacher, parents and child in need. Her calm and friendly demeanor and listening attitude makes her one of the best employees at Laurel Hill. Mrs. Coleman hears and handles many difficult situations during the day and she does it all with an encouraging, positive smile on her face. Mrs. Coleman has been in my classroom several days in the past two weeks. She has pulled students to talk to them when they are upset or anxious, dealing with peer disagreements, and guiding and helping students navigate difficult situations. She came in to do a whole class lesson on respect for each other in my classroom after seeing a need with these 6th graders. She then met with several different students in groups and individually to hear what they were experiencing and coach them through their problems using reflective, nonjudgmental conversations. It is not just what she does, but HOW she does it. Whether supporting a colleague, myself, or a student, she makes you feel like the most important person in the room. It is truly a unique skill to show how much you truly CARE and she demonstrates it every single day."

- Marissa Williamson, Laurel Hill ES

---------

Amy Lee, Lee HS

"Amy Lee is our SOSA and deals a lot with our students who have attendance/behavior issues.  Amy is an advocate for these students and gives these kids an ally at the school.  Many times instead of skipping, they will talk to Amy first and she will help them put a plan in place regarding academics, etc. Amy goes above and beyond for many of her students but one in particular.  This particular student is an unaccompanied youth and Amy has been a support for her while the student has been at Lee. Amy continuously checks in on her and even assists her outside of school if necessary.  She contacts outside resources, makes sure she is attending school every day and is in constant contact with her teachers to ensure she is staying on track. This student has some medical issues and Amy is adamant that the student keep up with her doctor's appointments. This student considers Amy as a family member and has really blossomed since Amy has been a part of her life. I feel Amy deserves recognition for her continuous work with the challenging group of students she works with. She does a great job and truly cares for our students."

- Lisa Ingrasci-Hakim, Lee HS

Dawn Ruffner-Tillerson, Stonecroft Transportation

"Yesterday our club took a field trip to from Fairfax High to George Mason Manassas campus and we had the best bus driver I have ever met in my 17 years in FCPS.  Ms. Dawn – “Sunshine” was the friendliest person who just made us all happy to smile along with her.  She recognized four of my students and said hello to them all by name and she even remembered one from when he was in Middle School.  My kids cheered that she remembered them. She drove us to Manassas and she chatted with the students and me the whole long way.  She even gave me a text message saying what time she would be back since she had to go and make the elementary school run in the middle of our times.  She was also an extremely safe and cautious driver and that put me to ease. As a bus driver, I am sure that parents and teachers do not always say thank you or give a shout out of a job well done however I could not go without giving her praise.  I teach Business and my students are in the Future Business Leaders of America and I want them to know what makes a great employee and that we are only as good as those we work with."

- Melanie West, Fairfax HS

---------

Sharon Iacangelo, Oak Hill ES

"Our son had Mrs. I for kindergarten last year, and she was the one who helped pull out his tooth when it was very loose. This year, even though Mrs. I is in a different class, he would only let Mrs. I wiggle his tooth (neither of his parents were allowed, even when the tooth was hanging by a thread). He made us wait until he saw Mrs. I, who gamely walked him to the clinic and gently pulled out his tooth. Tooth-pulling obviously is not in her job description, but she didn't complain or seem bothered by it at all. It was so sweet."

- Elana Natker, Oak Hill ES

Audrey Breeden, Instructional Warehouse

"When traveling to different work locations, one may think they have everything they need, but inevitably that is not always the case. If you happen to be at the instructional warehouse building when this happens, you will look around for someone to help you and will probably see Audrey working at her desk. You will tell her what you need and she will do her best to help out.  On a recent visit, I saw a welcome desk set up for all who visit this location. The desk contains all one may need doing their visit; pens, stapler, scissor, folders, post-its, etc.  I asked around to see who had this great idea and discovered it was Audrey.  Thank you Audrey of making all who enter the instructional warehouse feel welcomed!  Thanks too for seeing a need and taking action to help others."

Ines Gianella, Dunn Loring Childhood Education

"I am an Educational Diagnostician for Early Childhood at Dunn Loring. On Saturday, 10/21/2017, I received an email that my Spanish interpreter had been hospitalized and would not be able to interpret for an assessment that was scheduled for Monday 10/23. I contacted 11 different interpreters but as would be expected they were all scheduled for that day. I had Ines Gianella’s cell phone number so I contacted her to see if she would be available but she also busy. That could have been the end of my contact with Ines but I asked if she would be able to contact this parent and tell them that the assessment would have to be cancelled and rescheduled and of course she immediately responded that she would help me out. I have worked with Ines many times over my years at ECAT and have found her not only very professional and knowledgeable but also so caring and kind to our Spanish speaking families. FCPS should be proud to have an employee who would take time from her weekend to help an FCPS family."

- Janice Call, Dunn Loring Childhood Education
