Central: Patricia Vannoy – Transportation – Stonecroft Transportation Center

  • "On April 30, 2018, the attendant of bus 384, Patricia Vannoy, prevented an almost certain tragedy. I was driving the bus, stopped at the light at the intersection of Braddock Rd. and Little Rocky Run Circle in the left turn lane. When the light turned green for me she shouted for me to wait. A split second later a woman passed the entrance door from behind carrying an infant and walking hand in hand with a second small child. She had crossed Braddock Rd. diagonally from the Bent Tree Apartments toward Little Rocky Run Circle. Her path made her invisible to me while I was waiting for the light: it was only Patricia’s attentiveness and quick response that kept me from proceeding."

- James Gustafson, Stonecroft Transportation

Region 1: Amy Rekas – Cunningham Park Elementary School

  • "Last night my daughter said that she wished she could have Ms. Rekas as her teacher forever! Her dad and I feel the same. We love seeing all the things she’s learning in Ms. Rekas's class and hearing about all the fun she’s having. The other night my daughter had a bit of a panic attack when she got shampoo in her eyes for the first time. I was telling her to take a deep breath, and she stuck her hand in the air and followed five deep breaths on her fingers. She said that Ms. Rekas taught her that. It's hard to believe that Ms. Rekas can keep up with the county's loaded pacing guides and still have time to show her students mental health tricks! Also, when I run into Ms. Rekas at school events, she often will tell me something specific that my daughter said or did in class. I appreciate that. It makes me feel like she is really paying attention to my child!"

Region 2: Tricia Wayland, Sleepy Hollow Elementary School

  • "Tricia Wayland is a kind, caring and considerate teacher who always puts her students first. Two of my children have been privileged to have her as their teacher and their champion. My student came home recently talking about how much she loves lunch now, and I asked what had changed and she said, “Ms. Wayland lets us eat lunch in the classroom with her almost every day if we want”. Who knew that a teacher giving up her lunch period could make such an impact on students?  Her classroom management is evident in the way that the students treat each other with dignity and respect. My child loves Ms. Wayland and loves going to school. She challenges my child while making learning and reading fun. No matter the day or time, Ms. Wayland is responsive to my emails and offers quick solutions to any situation. I have seen her on soccer, baseball, and football fields watching current and past students games and cheering them on. It amazes me how proud the kids are that she attends their games and they run to her with hugs and the same question – “Where’s Scotty (her dog), Ms. Wayland?” Her response is always the same, 'At home with mama Wayland playing with Bo.' My family is fortunate to have had Ms. Wayland not only once but twice, and hopefully a third time next year. We appreciate her genuine smile and effort to make a difference in the lives of all her students. She is a positive role model who values and respects her students."

Region 3: Brian Hannon, Hayfield Secondary School (Pictured)

  • "Brian Hannon is the silent Poetry Event Planner Guru. He has been for the last 7+ years a strong advocate for student voices. He has the poetry club at Hayfield, but he and Co-Coordinator, Joseph Green, have expanded poetry slam venues for not only all interested poetry clubs at FCPS schools through their November Invitational but schools in Maryland, DC and throughout Virginia in the largest Teen Poetry Slam in Virgina, hosted every year at GMU, The HyperBole. This kind of grassroots campaign for student voices has expanded over the years to align with the Chicago Teen Slam's incarnation in DC, Louder than a Bomb, which hosts its finals at the Kennedy Center this Sunday. I hope it continues to grow as a movement in and out of FCPS. They have given a stage to hope, not only for poets and students at Hayfield and FCPS, but to so many kids in the DMV. Brian's quiet, but resolute poetic advocacy, just shy of a decade of service to this cause has been Louder than a Bomb."

- Rachel Olarinde, Falls Church HS

Region 4: Lindsey Gera, Bull Run Elementary School

  • "For the past six years, Lindsey has been a special education teacher in non-cat, enhanced autism, and emotional disabilities classrooms. In addition to that, Lindsey is enrolled in the ABA consortium through George Mason University, a rigorous program which she is pursuing to further support her students. Her dedication to her students alone would qualify her for an FCPS cares award, but what makes Lindsey even more special is her creation of Toys For Teachers, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to collect and redistribute donated toys to teachers of students with disabilities in Fairfax County. Lindsey seeks out donations for gently used and/or new toys and then fills wish lists for special education teachers. Lindsey has been on a mission to ensure that our teachers have access to a greater variety of toys and other learning materials to better support their students in the classroom. Lindsey runs this organization almost single-handedly from her two-bedroom condo. She reads through wish lists, boxes up supplies for the teachers and ships them to a variety of schools. In one year, Lindsey has shipped over 150 boxes to schools all over Fairfax County. She recently sponsored a library drive which allowed Pimmit Hills to create their first ever library! As if that is not enough, Lindsey,  through Toys for Teachers has also partnered with the Key Center providing those students with significant disabilities the opportunity to develop important job skills such as sorting and packing. So many teachers and even more students have benefited from Lindsey's dedication and generosity. She deserves to be recognized for all she has done for the Special Education community."

- Susan Holland, Pimmit Hills Early Childhood Center

Region 5: Sean Kenney, Greenbriar East Elementary School

  • "Sean has been spending his lunch time once a week to mentor five of my third grade boys. He shares a meal with them, talks to them about making good choices and offers great, motivational advice. He stops by the classroom to touch base with the boys daily for a quick check in/pep talk. The boys can earn some basketball time if they spend the week making good choices. The results of these chats have been amazing. Two of the boys who had been teasing another student have become that students' advocates. Another boy in the group has changed his attitude and become much more positive. I attribute the boys' progress to the time, enthusiasm and dedication Sean shares with them each week. He is going above and beyond to help these students."

Other FCPS Cares of the Month Submissions for May 2018

Laure Grove, Eagle View ES

"Ms. Laure's EXEMPLARY service as a Resource Teacher to my 4-year old daughter has changed our daughter's life and our family's life forever!  My daughter—lovingly nicknamed “Cupcake" by Ms. Laure—was diagnosed with a mild Social/Emotional delay and assigned an IEP in the Fall of 2017. As luck would have it, our case was assigned to Ms. Laure—new to FCPS at the time. Now, just 6 months after the fact, Ms. Laure’s genius intuition, brilliant proficiency and natural command of Early Childhood Education and Development have triggered a tsunami of enlightenment to ALL who have witnessed the amazing impact she has had on our daughter. Through example and guided practice, Ms. Laure has dissolved every stereotype and preconceived notion my husband and I, our community of family, friends and our regular preschool teachers had about “Cupcake’s” presentation of social/emotional delays. Through passion, talent and dedication, Ms. Laure has swiftly excavated the magic key to "Cupcake's" mysterious mind, and unlocked her special music for ALL OF US TO WITNESS and celebrate!  It has been such a sweet story of what happens to a seed of hope when nurtured through love and dedication.  To witness Ms. Laure's commitment to what she does, along with her insightful and masterful teaching technique is an encouragement and absolutely enlightening experience! It’s leaders like Ms. Laure that we all need to watch and learn from because she is an authentic and captivating teacher on SO MANY, MANY levels. She is humble, wonderful, grounded and talented, and is on a path of doing GREAT THINGS in this world and in the MINDS of all of the lucky kiddos who have the privilege of being taught by her (and yes, I am one of them).  Ms. Laure’s capacity to teach and change this world for the better is clearly infinite and unstoppable. Thank you to all of you at FCPS that were/are responsible for recognizing her talent and bringing her to the wonderful Team at FCPS.  We are so lucky to have her!  She’s clearly an ace up our/your sleeve.  And, suspecting that you are already well aware of this, I just wanted to say it again.  Because she’s that good.  And deserves to be called out for her amazingness and all that it is. Thank you for your time.  And thank you for acquiring and nurturing her talent.
My Very Best To You and Your FCPS Team."

Chrissy Roehm, Cardinal Forest ES

"I have had many positive interactions with Chrissy throughout the year, but she has gone above and beyond in this last quarter of the 2017-2018 school year. Despite it being the craziest time of year for all of us teachers, Chrissy has been such a pleasant and responsive colleague to collaborate with on proper placement proposals for our preschool students. Despite us being based out of different school sites (she is Cardinal Forest and I am a resource teacher based out of Forestdale), I never hesitate to reach out to her when appropriate because I know interacting with her will always be a positive experience."

- Liz Busch, Virginia Hills Early Childhood Center

-------

Nicole Tempesta, Sprague Technology Center

"Nicole designed and produced a beautiful concert program for the Lake Braddock Band. It was a special concert and she did a terrific job with design, layout, and presentation. She was professional, helpful, and extremely willing to work with my many edits for my own content portions. I am very appreciative of the program she put together and sharing it with my students, Colleagues and dignitaries present. Thank you Nicole for a wonderful experience!"

- Michael Luley, Lake Braddock Secondary

-------

Mike McGuinness, Kilmer Center

"At the Kilmer Cafe, a school-based enterprise, Mike works every morning with students whose job is to identify potential customers, greet them, and ask them what they would like to order. Under Mike's supervision and encouragement, one student in particular has notably increased the speed, accuracy, and independence of his communication on the job. Mike has encouraged without overprompting, allowing the student enough space and time to interact with potential customers while subtly conveying to passerby that the student might have something to say to them. As a result, people linger longer, and the student has had more opportunities for successful interactions. And since foot traffic may be light during some of the Kilmer Cafe's opening times, Mike creatively began to incorporate a free option at the ordering space to make a wish on the tiger mascot. This has encouraged more people, both staff and students, to approach the table and interact--so the student workers have yet more opportunities to communicate with customers. Thank you, Mike, for your patience, dedication, and creativity!"

- Heather Frei, Kilmer Center

-------

Betsy Chaykin, Twain MS

"Betsy is a vital member of the testing team who works hard to support multiple testing assignments including set up, take down, bucket making, and examining.  She always has a positive attitude about testing even when given the longest sessions including overflow!  When it comes to checking buckets for accommodations Betsy is a champ constantly making sure all our students receive the appropriate tickets and accommodations!"

- Ashley Moeller, Twain MS

Carrie Holmes, Forbes Place

"As I began the new year of 2018 with my decision to retire and scheduling an ERFC Meeting with Carrie was the best extreme experience ever. Her outstanding understanding of all the procedures and commitment to process my retirement documents were beyond amazing. Her kindness, being patient, and a great listener is priceless. As I leave this coming month, Carrie will forever be part of my adventure with FCPS. I am honored to have met such a reliable, awesome lady. WE thank you, my husband and I appreciate all you have done and continue to do for all the FCPS retirees. WE THANK YOU SO MUCH."

- Hiyam Alzer, Alan Leis Center

Kin Chow, Lorton Center

"I have had the privilege of working with Mr. Chow since November of 2017 during this time frame his position has been a School bus attendant. Shannon DiGuadio and Linda Shannon, Frost MS

"My child is in the CSS program at Frost and I wanted to call out and thank the incredible support my child received this week after a tough time he had at school. They were able to listen to my child, find out the root cause of the issue, and help him problem solve a better way next time. These two professionals embodied what it means to provide individualized instruction that works for the child. I am very grateful to have their support and want to publicly give praise to both."

Laura Organek, Sprague Technology Center

"Laura is a highly responsive, knowledgeable and thorough support for our schools with SIS. I have been in the SBTS role for 8 years and she has never failed to follow through on any question that I may have regarding our online grade books. She has a sound understanding of the urgency that SBTS can feel as they support the staff in their buildings. The ultimate effect of this is that our TEACHERS feel supported as a result of her diligent work. Thank you for being who you are, Laura!"

- Pamela Galietta, Rocky Run MS

-------

Janice Pritchett, Falls Church HS

"You guys will not even believe how amazingly awesome this teacher is. Like for example, she is very easy to talk to and makes the environment VERY COMFORTABLE!  She always pushes me to do my best, even when I think I cant. Honestly, I think you should definitely recognize this teacher, because she makes school worth attending. Thank you, yours truly."

Mary Handlon, Daniels Run ES

"I would like to recognize Mary Handlon. She works in the front office of my school and is AMAZING! Her desk is strategically located to the right as you enter the office. For most visitors and staff, she is the first point of contact. Mary's welcoming presence, her wealth of knowledge and her caring and patient nature help set the climate of our school. Anyone (whether it be a visitor, staff member or student) who interacts with Mary receives outstanding service. Mary you are a reflection of the positivity character traits of integrity, kindness, gratitude, hope, enthusiasm and more and every hour, every day, everyone who has the pleasure of interacting with you knows that FCPS CARES. Thank you for being an indelible representation of our school values and those of FCPS."

-------

Lawrence Veasley and Kyle Irvine, Daniels Run ES

"I would like to give a huge shout out to the technology specialists at my school. Every day they go above and beyond to prevent technical glitches and promptly resolve any that develop. Both of them have plunged in to ensure that SOL testing runs smoothly. On any given day, they may have to explain the same thing to multiple staff members or even to the same staff members over and over. Yet, these two do not skip a beat. They meet everyone where they are with technology and patiently and respectfully interact with each customer (whether it be a student or staff member) they serve to explain, guide and/or advise. Thank you for everything you do Lawrence and Kyle! Thanks to the two of you, we are all plugged in with no 404's!"

- Stacy Greene, Daniels Run ES

Thank you and I still owe you."

Bryan Kirby, Twain ES

-------

Jennifer Jewell, Rose Hill ES

"I can't recognize Ms. Jewell for just one day. Her role as an educator goes above and beyond one day and covers an entire school year. My son entered her fourth-grade class a damaged student. He had many behavioral challenges that led me to have him medically evaluated where I learned he had ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder. The RHES staff promptly placed him on a 504 program and began assessments to determine if he would benefit from an IEP. The team worked diligently throughout the fall and created an IEP tailored for my son. The progress he's made this past school year has been amazing. I respect the work the entire IEP team has done in helping my son, but Ms. Jewell has been the central figure that held him together and kept him on track. The extra work she does to help him learn, the extra materials and online resources she supplies to me to help him at home, and the extra focus he receives from her in school goes over and above any expectation of an educator. She's not only his educator, she's his only parent/admin-approved recess soccer referee and one of his greatest cheerleaders. And as you may infer from that special nomination, Ms. Jewell is the one educator who recognizes the enormous challenges my son presents in recess soccer because he's an elite player who requires extraordinary intervention so he doesn't overwhelm recreational players or misinterpret their novice mistakes as deliberate aggression. But more than any of this, Ms. Jewell will be the one teacher he remembers the rest of his life as his favorite. I know this because he tells me so nearly every day."

Miranda Lojek, White Oaks ES

"We have had such an amazing year with Ms. Lojek as our teacher! She seems to genuinely care about her students. We were very impressed with all the wonderful experiences that she facilitated for our son. He enjoyed the “Measurement Olympics”, and felt the “brain breaks” that they were given really helped him focus. She went above and beyond all expectations. She communicated effectively when we had issues and helped resolve them in a timely manner."

- a White Oaks ES community member

-------

Shannon Hoff, Colvin Run ES

"I became ill while teaching my Literacy lesson. Ms. Hoff immediately came to assist me by asking if I needed medical assistance or just someone to be by side at the time.  She stayed by side until the sickness passed. She made sure I had water, assisted me with cleaning up, and accompanied me to ensure I was stable enough to walk up the hallway.  Shannon is definitely someone cares. Thank you, Shannon!"

- Tawanya M Scarboro, Colvin Run ES

-------

Kate Gray, Laurel Ridge ES

"Ms. Gray is such a thoughtful and compassionate educator. She learned some former students were in need of reassurance and support and she was able to squeeze in a visit posthaste to comfort and care for former students. Kudos, Kate. #yourock"

- Marybeth McDermott, Parklawn ES

-------

Sarah Fuller, Fairview ES

"Mrs. Fuller is a kind, positive person who always greets everyone entering the school with a smile. She always makes time to answer questions and to treat everyone around her with respect and patience. She displays an attitude of caring and a calm demeanor every day, even when others might seem overwhelmed or frazzled. She is truly a treasure to have as a part of Fairview Elementary School and I appreciate her dedication and compassion."

- Laurie O'Neill, Fairview ES

-------

Loren Brower, Haycock ES

"Loren is constantly working above and beyond for the students and teachers here at Haycock Elementary. She serves many roles as an AART. She grown students with high expectations and rigorous curriculum implementation, communicates with parents efficiently, kindly, and effectively,  supports teachers through AAP processes, understanding curriculum, identifying areas to extend and enrich students, serves as a mentor to first-year teachers, and helps mobilize the school towards initiatives that would benefit all students. She is a flexible, professional, hard working FCPS employee who is trusted by all. She is someone that you can constantly count on to do what is best for students, and who follows through on everything she is asked to do and anything she sets her mind to. Haycock Elementary School benefits profoundly by her service."

-------

Jennifer Hertzberg, Flint Hill ES

"Ms. Hertzberg is our new principal and she has been a tremendous asset to our school. Ms. Hertzberg has such a gracious way of communicating with staff and supports her staff in so many ways to reach children academically, while also holding such a high regard for social-emotional learning. She brings her professional knowledge to every situation and is so helpful and really cares about her staff and the community.  Ms. Hertzberg has really shown up for her new role as principal, which is such an incredible feat, in of itself. Ms. Hertzberg is so approachable and relatable. I feel really connected to my work while I am at school and I feel really supported in an environment where I can fully engage in my role as a counselor and as an educator. Thank you, Ms. Hertzberg, for everything you have done for education and for our school; you are really chartering new territory!  We are so grateful for you and what you bring to the table. Thank you!"

- Lauren Lipton, Flint Hill ES

-------

Dolores Malloy, Robinson SS

"Mrs. Malloy has been a shining example of someone who supports students. In this day and age, our children are faced with emotional stress and strain more intense than we ever could have imagined.  It seems like every other week we hear about a horrible and traumatic event -- a teen suicide, a school shooting, a tragic accident.  For many students, these causes depression, anxiety, and a fear that if they go to school they may not make it home that day.  Mrs. Malloy is doing a fantastic job helping those students overcome their fear and focus on what they need to.  She provides supports and strategies for them to be able to feel safe and know that she truly has their back.  She is not only helping the students be academically successful, she is truly helping them become successful at navigating these very complicated social and emotional waters.  She is a God-send and FCPS is beyond fortunate to have her working with our children."

- Amy Beck, Cherry Run ES

-------

Warren Jeffries, Woodson-IT

"Warren provided excellent service to resolve a phone problem we were experiencing at Fort Belvoir Primary School."

- Pam Day, Fort Belvoir Primary

Sandra Meador, Rose Hill ES

"This is Sandra's first year at RH as our Math Coach. I am blown away at her immense knowledge in the area of math & also her ability to be a highly effective coach. To be a highly effective coach, you not only need the training & practice but you also need the personal skills to connect with colleagues. Trust & commitment need to be evident in the coaching relationship. Sandra builds trust with ease & there are several examples of her high commitment to student and teacher learning. Sandra has taught me so many things. She has co-taught with me, modeled lessons, & worked along side me in my classroom. Sandra knows my students by name & also knows their academic strengths/weaknesses. She is invested in their learning. Sandra is also invested in me. She has worked hard with me & put a lot of time aside (before/after school) to plan with me or coach me. We are able to have reflective conversations after lessons and we challenge each others thinking as we unpack or plan new lessons. I have become a stronger math teacher because of her. I have more confidence going into the math lesson & have a deeper understanding of the mathematical content. I am so grateful to have Sandra as a math coach. She is an integral part of my success AND my student's success. Thank you, Sandra, for everything you have done this year!"

Gail Heidt, Floris ES

"Mrs. Heidt has truly made my daughter’s kindergarten year wonderful! She understands the importance of all the “firsts” the students are experiencing as kindergartners—and makes them super fun for the kids!  She communicates often with the parents and knows my daughter so well-she can easily talk about her strengths and areas of growth. She works tirelessly to ensure my daughter is progressing and makes me feel better when I worry. I am so thankful she was my daughter’s teacher this year! The best testament to her teaching is that my daughter has a countdown at my house right now—not of how many days until summer but instead how many days my daughter has remaining with Mrs. Heidt. She cries when I tell her summer is coming soon!"

- a Floris ES parent

-------

Katy Saini, Canterbury Woods ES

"Katy goes above and beyond her job as a PHTA in our classroom. She truly cares for our students, their current well-being, and their future. She supports our students in being consistent in using ABA methodologies, modifying materials to support their access to learning, and consistently attends training available for CAT B/enhanced Autism staff. She spends time outside of her work hours finding and making learning materials for our students. I look at Katy as a co-teacher. I would not be able to do my job without her. She is able to quickly take over in running the classroom if I am out of the classroom for meetings, etc. She supports me in collecting data and consistently reflects on student progress and the ways we instruct students. She asks for feedback and implements that feedback. Katy is a tremendous asset to our program and I don't know what I or our students would do without her!"

She knows all of our 5th graders & frequently visits the classroom. Ms. Edwards is always on board to help or try something new. "Mrs. McCormick has done an amazing job of filling in for Mrs. Gigliotti this year. We would like to specifically thank her for her support and flexibility with our daughter who is dealing with a debilitating medical condition that has significantly impacted her ability to attend school consistently. Mrs. McCormick continued with Mrs. Gigliotti's willingness to allow our daughter to participate as she was able to this year. Chorus has become our daughter's only true connection to school and has allowed her to continue to feel part of her peer group. For this, we are truly thankful."

The welcoming environment she creates is beyond compare. Our school has a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. Veronica is now learning American Sign Language to better communicate with students she serves. She is a gift to our school community and we are grateful!"

"Robin Ward, Ammar Attar, Thuyanh Pham from IT and Tina Lao, Blair Robertson and Yuhan Cai from OST worked whole day Sunday till 11:11pm to resolve some glitches in the system and make sure Friday SOL testing results are updated in our FCPS EDSL system for school users to consume. They are the behind-the-scene heroes who commit this effort every Sunday throughout the testing window. Hats-off to them and thank you for all you've done for our schools and students!"

Katie Looney, Union Mill ES

"Katie has gone above and beyond this past school year. On top of her classroom and school duties, Katie has worked hard to build relationships with students and frequently works into the evening to help both students and colleagues.  She happily fields evening phone calls helping her peers navigate language and procedures for IEPs.  Additionally, Katie is very popular for her culinary craftsmanship, often feeding her colleagues at Union Mill ES, as well as her husband’s colleagues at Centreville HS."

Jennifer Reed, Colvin Run ES

"Mrs. Reed has been the most amazing kindergarten teacher that I could ever hope to have for my child! There are so many reasons why she is fantastic, but I wanted to recognize her for one situation in particular. I emailed her to let her know about a change in our after-school care situation that was beyond our control. I was really just telling her to give her a heads up. She ended up giving me some very thoughtful and heartfelt advice, suggesting an option that I had not considered. This ended up being a wonderful experience for our child and we would have never thought of it if Mrs. Reed hadn't gone out of her way to weigh in and brainstorm options. Her compassion and concern turned a situation we weren't thrilled about into one that was fantastic. It's so clear that she knows every child inside and out and genuinely cares about their well being. I feel so lucky that my child was able to have such a positive introduction to school in her classroom, and we will miss her so much next year!"

Jill Moore, Hunters Woods ES

"I am writing to acknowledge Mrs. Jill Moore, a second grade teacher at Hunters Woods Elementary School. I first met Mrs. Moore when she was a student teacher in 2012 in my older son’s second grade classroom. All of the students really enjoyed her warmth and enthusiasm. I was thrilled when I found out that my younger son would be in her second grade class this year. When you walk into Mrs. Moore’s classroom the students are engaged and having fun. My son especially likes how she incorporates music into the daily routine to transition between activities. She clearly understands the learning differences and needs of behaviorally challenged students like my son. I’ve been so impressed with her patience and positive attitude. Mrs. Moore always takes the time to contact me when my son is having a rough day in the classroom. She helps him navigate peer disputes and gives him techniques to learn how to manage his feelings. She does all of this without judgement. Mrs. Moore always makes the time to give individual attention to any student in need, not just my child. With the current educational emphasis on test scores and standards of learning, it is so refreshing to meet a teacher who will take the time to teach other important life skills. Mrs. Moore exemplifies caring and positivity, and is an exceptional role model for all students."

Jennifer Kalletta, Riverside ES

"Ms. Kalletta is the best! My students love going to library because of Ms. Kalletta. Preschoolers can be difficult to teach but she always engages them and encourages them to really think and appreciate books. During SOL testing, Ms. Kalletta comes to our classroom each Friday and even brings books for them to choose from to check out. She truly goes above and beyond and we are so appreciative. My class LOVES books and Ms. Kalletta has a lot to do with it. Thank you so much!"

Kelley Rhodes, Sprague Technology Center

"Kelley has gone above and beyond helping me solve a problem that was 25 years in the making. Without Kelley's help and guidance I would have been so overwhelmed. Together, were able to look at the problem and actually fix it instead of just applying a band-aid. This will improve the library for all of my students and staff.  Thank you Kelley!"

Melissa Graves and Georgia Walsh, Lorton Center

"Melissa and Georgia are amazing heroes of the FCPS transportation team! They work tirelessly with our homeless students to help them remain in school during housing upheaval and crisis. In addition to the countless families that they have served, I want to highlight a particular, unique case where they went above and beyond.
We were supporting a homeless student and parent who needed transportation to school for the student's IEP Eligibility process. The family had no way to get to the school, and the IEP 60-day window was about to expire, meaning that this was an urgent situation. Georgia and Melissa worked together to identify an FCPS van that would be available at the scheduled time and location to transport the family to the school. Furthermore, there were unexpected complications on the morning of the testing, which Georgia and Melissa maneuvered with professionalism, an eye on safety, and respect for the family. I am constantly awed by the commitment of the entire transportation team - from routers, to van drivers, to management - in supporting the right of FCPS's homeless students to remain in their school during a period of homelessness. Thank you for your dedication and collaboration. We appreciate you!"

Jane Brill, Oakton ES

"My son was lucky enough to get Ms. Brill as his third grade teacher this year. My son has been a decent student, but has never really took a huge interest in his school work. This fall, he fell off the jungle gym at school and broke his arm. Ms. Brill sat with him calming him until the ambulance and parents arrived. When he arrived back at school after surgery days later, Ms. Brill went above and beyond to ensure that he was always engaged (even though his writing arm was casted). He never sat bored and knew that she was there to help him if he was unable to do something. This is just one story, but I have found she does this for each and every one of her students. As a member of the PTA, I have never been at the school before or after regular school hours that she doesn't have several students in her room whom she is providing extra help to. She finds a way to reach every child in her classroom and makes it fun to learn for everyone. At the end of the school year, my son is now motivated and challenged in a way that he has never been in the classroom. He is striving to do his best work on every test and is reading books as fast as he can get his hands on them. Ms. Brill takes an active interest in each child and has attended extra-curricular activities that her students are involved in. Her students respect her, trust her, and generally look forward to being in her classroom every day. I can honestly say that this is one teacher that my son will never forget. He has had a great third grade year because of her!"

Erin Zurbuchen, Great Falls ES

"During this teacher appreciation week, I wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to Erin!  She went way beyond the call of duty to help my daughter this week.  My daughter had missed the deadline to submit her “audition” video to Cooper’s orchestra instructor.  Given the time constraints, we did not have time to have her home bass (she plays the bass) properly tuned.  I could have taken it back to the music store for tuning, but that would have further delayed her submission.  As such, Erin kindly and generously offered to come to our home during her lunch hour to tune my daughter's bass!!  This kind extraordinary gesture is a testament to the amazing teachers and staff at GFES!  It meant a lot to my daughter as she was very upset about missing the deadline in the first place!  Erin helped her with a solution that allowed her to stay on track for orchestra next year. Thanks again to Erin and the entire teaching staff at GFES!"

Karen Baxter, Lynbrook ES

"Not only does Karen far exceed expectations in her role as our SBTS (which is greatly appreciated by us all) but she treats us to treats regularly. Karen is a phenomenal baker and will, sometimes randomly, sometimes at points of great need (like in the midst of WIDA or SOL testing), bring in volumes of baked goods. This morning our staff lounge has peanut butter Butterfinger cookies, chocolate chip pecan cookies, lemon sandwich cookies, brownies, Andes mint brownies, and rice Krispie bars. It is astounding what a lift it is to have a little treat like this when things are feeling overwhelming. It truly lifts morale individually and of us as a school."

Julie Rosenau, Sprague Center

"Small acts can mean a lot!  They have reverberations which impact people you may not have expected.  Julie's offer to deliver a National History Day board to the base school is an example of such a simple, powerful act.  After hosting student work in the lobby for a month and making the set-up a breeze, Julie then offered to return a  project to Mt. Vernon.  Her offer was unsolicited.  Here is who it impacted: the teacher who was asking for it; the student who was proud of her work and wanted to share it with others; the social studies department whose faith that projects wouldn't be lost if put on display in our offices; and me.  I am grateful for Julie's awareness and effort. It saved me time and supported the advocacy of student project-based learning and inquiry in high school social studies. For this,I am very grateful."

The student returned to school with a vision impairment that she had to learn to work with. Ms. Boyer is so caring and thoughtful of her and spends significant time reflecting on ways to support her needs. In the morning before school starts, Ms. Boyer can be found waiting for the student’s bus to help her off. Ms. Boyer spends her planning time working with the student and walking her around the building. She works to ensure that the student and her family understand her needs better. She’s gone above and beyond to support the student."

Ray Hanson, Sideburn Support Center

"Ray has shown amazing perseverance in figuring out the cooling system in the front office and in specific rooms at Cardinal Forest.  As the temperatures have been rising, Ray has checked in with the school each day. Once there was a pattern that the front office was not cooling well, he dedicated the time to be on the phone with Energy Management to determine the problem.  He found that there were some sensors that needed to be replaced. When he found that he needed parts, he went to the warehouse and quickly returned to install the needed sensor.  He stayed with the job until our office was operating in the cool zone.  It is Ray's dedication to his schools that sets him apart.  He is appreciated for his attention to detail and providing excellent service."

"Throughout the year Ms. Bolton always demonstrated kindness and diligence with her students and families. She would spend as much time as needed during meetings or phone calls to make sure everything was covered and understood. When my son broke his arm and was recovering in the hospital and home she checked in regularly. And before his return to school and even before I asked, Ms. Bolton assured me that we didn't have to worry about how my son would manage without his dominant arm/hand. She already had a plan in place for the different parts of his day and already communicated with other teachers about his temporary accommodations. Ms. Bolton, our family is deeply grateful for the education and care you gave to our son and all the first grade students day in and day out!"

Andrea Jones, Willow Oaks

"Our World Languages Department has been anxious about our upcoming Final Exam assessments on eCart. Looking for feedback from other SBTS on how they were handling this at their school, I posted a question on our SBTS Google+ Community page. Within the hour, Andrea reached out to me by email, letting me know of all the resources she has created to support this assessment for secondary World Language teachers. She has really gone above and beyond for support. She came to our World Language Department meeting yesterday afternoon and showed the teachers how to access the assessment and what the student-view looks like. She patiently answered all of their questions and provided step-by-step handouts to prepare for the assessment. Andrea also created a Herndon HS specific Google folder of shared resources for those teachers. Andrea created a Secondary World Languages Google Classroom for all FCPS secondary teachers, which is filled with situational tutorials for teacher support in setting up eCart. Today, Andrea followed-up with our Department Chair and myself, thanking us for the opportunity yesterday. This is the reason I work for FCPS. The support we receive at all levels is paramount to our success. Thank you, Andrea!"

Miranda Lojek, White Oaks ES

"Miranda Lojek is a patient and understanding responsive classroom teacher at White Oaks ES. She understands the power of her words as she speaks to her first-grade students. She is always focused on her language with her class and instills concert activities with her interactions and the students' environment. When students were not lining up she took pictures in her classroom of the students when they had a line that was disheveled and then took pictures as they improved, until she got the line that she wanted, which was single, straight, all students looking forward, and silent. She not only told them what was expected, but posted the pictures, and every time she is picking them up from specials she uses her fingers to indicted where the class is, and what she expects. The amazing part of this is now she just holds up her fingers and the students respond. She never raises her voice and does this with a kind and friendly face. Ms. Lojek is able to translate the abstract into concrete actions.  She then, in turn, teaches this to specialists. What an amazing teacher FCPS has in Ms. Lojek."

Pamela Laing, Lake Braddock SS

"Ms. Laing is so much more to Lake Braddock than just her title and role. She runs everything in the cafeteria and helps with anything food related to the building. Most recently, she was vital in pulling off a faculty appreciation BBQ, while prepping her own staff for an enormous walk-through the following day. Simply put, the event could not have been pulled off without her help.  We are beyond lucky to have Pam at Lake Braddock and are extremely appreciative!"

- Tony DiBari, Lake Braddock SS

---------

Mel Morgan, Lake Braddock SS

"Mr. Morgan is constantly helping out, both with students and with his colleagues. While there are many examples, the most recent was his help in organizing and carrying out a faculty appreciation BBQ. Mel donated his experience, as well as 4 hours manning a grill to make sure that his colleagues could enjoy an appreciation luncheon. We're fortunate to have somebody like Mel here at Lake Braddock!"

- Tony DiBari, Lake Braddock SS

---------

David Plum, Lake Braddock SS

"Mr. Plum works hard for students and has a close bond with his colleagues. An example of this was today when he stepped in to help out with our faculty BBQ. Mr. Plum volunteered 4 hours today, manning the grill to make sure that all faculty was fed, even though it was an event to appreciate him as well! We're very fortunate to have him with us at LB!"

- Tony DiBari, Lake Braddock SS

---------

Johnny Moore, Lake Braddock SS

"Mr. Moore helps in many capacities at Lake Braddock.  He helps with field and facility maintenance, and can always be counted on when needed. Today, Mr. Moore helped set up a Faculty Appreciation BBQ and helped man the grill for 4 hours to make sure that everybody was fed. This is just another example of Mr. Moore being ready to jump in and help at a moment's notice. We're fortunate to have Johnny at Lake Braddock Secondary School!"

Dominic Prakash, Lake Braddock SS

"Mr. Prakash is constantly working hard, not just for his students, but also for his colleagues.  In this specific incident, Mr. Prakash helped organize a staff cookout for Teacher Appreciation Week, and then manned the grill for 4 hours to make sure everybody was fed.  This is just one of many examples where Mr. Prakash asserts himself as a team player and puts others ahead of himself.  We are fortunate to have Mr. Prakash at Lake Braddock!"

Tina Sedghi, Greenbriar East ES

"Tina is the PHTA assigned to our Enhanced Autism Class. In the past year, she has worked with 2 teachers and 3 IA--becoming the consistent instructional presence for "our boys." She has participated in classroom-based professional development to become more and more involved in the instructional process: learning to take data, reinforce positive behavior, and supporting transitions to and from inclusive settings. When parents ask, "Who is my child's best friend in class?" I always answer "Ms. Tina" because she greets every student with structure, discipline, and love. Thank you, Ms. Tina, for being a huge part of our students' success."

- Sabra Lowery, Greenbriar East ES

Day Leary, Danielle Leach, and Kristen Cunningham, Falls Church HS

"Day, Danielle, and Kristen spent over 20 hours reviewing qualitative and quantitative data in EDSL on each student to determine if more data was necessary and if an intervention class for next year was appropriate. I sat in for the first few and listened as each asked questions and checked different sources to identify by name and need. Their dedication is honorable and I’m excited to see the output in the fall."

- Jessica Grenfell, Falls Church HS

---------

Gabi Ritchey, Falls Church HS

"On short notice, I asked Ms. Ritchey to help me determine decisions based on a group of students. She quickly jumped at the chance and was positive through the experience, which was not a given for the work we were doing. This is the norm for her. She’s always smiling. She truly knows students by name and by need and that’s impressive as the SOSA, that’s nearly 2100 students. What’s more is her passion is contagious and she makes colleagues go above and beyond because they see the connection their efforts make on improving student lives on a daily basis. Lastly, she has a love for growing, improving, and learning and takes on any challenge or new idea that comes her way, or she’ll seek them out. I’m so glad to work with someone that makes me better at my job and reminds us all that we are there for the students."

Dr. Texdahl is a treasure and our family truly appreciates her guidance and care during this school year."

Beth Spille, Lake Braddock SS

"Ms. Spille is a middle school AVID teacher at Lake Braddock who does amazing things for students, while also helping to build a great program. Most recently, she put together a great recertification presentation while her partner teacher was out on maternity.  It was a big undertaking and the first time that Beth had taken this on, and she knocked it out of the park. We are very lucky to have Ms. Spille who goes to great lengths for kids!"

Diane Trabucco, Gatehouse Administration Center

"Diane Trabucco facilitated the processing and distribution of 2,600 renewal pcards in the month of April, 2018 by pre-ordering the necessary supplies, typing and printing mailing labels and attaching them to the envelopes we use to pony the renewal pcards to the appropriate destination, running PaymentNet reports and creating spreadsheets so the renewal pcards could be logged in and working diligently until all of the April renewals had been activated in PaymentNet. Although this is part of her job, she took on a huge amount of extra work to make sure this process ran smoothly and correctly.  I could not have completed this project on time without her excellent planning and execution."

Jaimelee Delgrosso, Coates ES

"Ms. Delgrosso (Ms. Del) has been a wonderful teacher and encourager for our super sensitive and very outgoing daughter. Ms. Del has maintained open lines of communication with me throughout the school year, going above and beyond what I would expect of a teacher. When meeting with her to discuss special circumstances around my daughter's educational needs, it is clear that Ms. Del knows my daughter well...both her challenges and strengths and moreover, it is abundantly clear that Ms. Del cares deeply for my daughter and her ability to succeed and be happy in the classroom. I feel like I have a true parent/teacher partnership with Ms. Del and am so grateful for the additional time and attention she spends with her students to ensure that each of them gets what they need so that they can be successful in her classroom.
Ms. Del is both firm and caring, a combination that makes my daughter feel safe with her as a teacher and makes her eager to go to school each day and learn from Ms. Del. I'm so thankful to have her looking out for my 1st grader this year."

Leonardo Saa, Walt Whitman MS

"On May 3rd, an oven in the Home Economics classroom at Walt Whitman Middle School was turned on, to preheat, for a cooking project. The oven had been used to store pots and pans with plastic handles which, unfortunately, at the time the oven was turned on, were still inside the oven, causing the handles to melt onto the open flame below. The fire alarm was quickly activated and all occupants were safely evacuated. Leonardo (Leo) Saa, Operating Engineer for the Office of Facilities Management (OFM) rapidly utilized his safety training skills and expertise to extinguish the fire and isolate the gas supply to the oven. Once the fire was contained and occupants were allowed back into the school, Leo made adjustments to the ventilation equipment, allowing more outside air to be circulated throughout the building and maximized the exhaust, to rid the building of the burnt plastic smell caused by the fire. Leo is also changing the air filters on rooftop equipment that service the area to ensure the best indoor air quality possible for students and staff. Leo’s quick thinking and swift action prevented this incident from becoming a major disaster. Thank you, Leo, for all you do every day! You are an asset to OFM and FCPS!"

Leslie Kotecki, Bull Run Early Childhood Program

"Leslie is a colleague in the Early Childhood Special Education Preschool Program. If you looked up the definition of a team player, Leslie more than exemplifies the meaning of this. As busy as teaching becomes throughout the year, Leslie always takes the time from her caseload to help others and goes beyond what is asked of her. When working with children with varying levels of delays, Leslie not only offers a positive perception to the problem, but then goes beyond what is asked by providing examples, instruction, and materials. She takes the time to write detailed notes to assure there is clarity and a mutual understanding, as well as keeping the lines of communication open to assure success with the teacher and student. Leslie's willingness to always be positive and share her wisdom creates a collaboration amongst the team that benefits not only the student but the teacher."

"I had a hard time putting in a date because it's been the length of the time I've known Chandi. Chandi has had my youngest two kids in kindergarten. And I have said repeatedly to people that why I have liked and appreciated all of my kid's teachers, Chandi is the cream of the crop. She's the type of teacher you pray and hope your child gets, especially in kindergarten which can be such a scary new beginning for kids. My children have thrived in her class. She is the perfect mix of warm but firm and helps kids become the best version of themselves. She sees the potential in everyone, her class always seems organized but like kids are having fun and loving learning, and I can't imagine my kids having a better start to their elementary years with anyone other than Chandi. She rocks!!"

Russel Wade, West Springfield HS

"Mr. Wade came to the rescue with his golf cart when I accidentally brought the wrong lesson to teach a group of students in Sparta (what we call the set of trailers by the baseball field while under construction). It's a 10-minute walk from my room to Sparta, and he saw I was distressed and immediately offered to drive me up to get the correct lesson, waited for me, and drove me back down. Because of his kindness, I was able to teach the correct lesson to the students and did not lose 20-minutes of instructional time going to retrieve it. Mr. Wade always goes above and beyond the call of duty, and this is just one example of how he helps teachers and students."
