FCPS CARES of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Carrie Sarsour, Gatehouse Admin Center

"It is difficult to pinpoint one specific experience that stands out with Carrie because every time we have asked for help from her, we have received excellent customer service and above/beyond attention to detail. Carrie has placed temporary subs to help us out when our regular shift was depleted. Carrie has also given us help with hiring hourly office staff. After Carrie sets you up, you are not forgotten. She updates and reminds you weekly, at least, to ensure you are carrying out the process as you should. Without her help, it would be easy to forget procedures you need to do. Carrie is also concerned about the employees she places with schools and advocates for the best situations for both the school and the temporary employee. She has helped us out in several jams and we appreciate her hard work, attention to detail, and follow-up all of the time."

Beth Schires, Carson MS (Pictured) - View the Celebration!

"It is an honor to recommend my club’s sponsor Ms. Elizabeth Schires, to receive the Cares Award. When the Fairfax Country Public School District transitioned to virtual classrooms during the Spring of 2020, there were many students who were concerned about the transition. I heard from students in my neighborhood about how they were nervous about conducting classes virtually and wanted to form study pods with their friends. This is when I came up with the idea of forming a tutoring club and reached out to some elementary school students who might want to connect with middle schoolers to help them with their math homework. The formation of the Helping Minds Club, which has become a very popular after-school program, would not have been possible without the incredible support and assistance of Ms. Schires. When I first discussed the idea, Ms. Schires was very open to my idea and suggestions, and she has been amazingly hands-on in helping me contact feeder elementary schools as well as helping me set up a strong foundation so that we can expand our club. She is kind, loving, fun, and caring and always offered encouragement during difficult times when we first tried to establish the club during the initial stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Without her, we would not have been able to properly setup our club’s FCPS Blackboard (which we used in 2019-20) as well as the FCPS Schoology page (which we are currently using for 2021-22).  More than anything, she is always there for us during our virtual club meetings and provides the leadership needed to strengthen our partnership with our feeder school, Coates Elementary. I cannot think of anyone more deserving to be recognized for the Cares Award, and I hope you will give her every consideration for this award."

Courtney Wolfson, McLean HS - View the Celebration!

"Courtney Wolfson is an unquestionable asset to the McLean Category B Special Education program. She is always responsive to requests for assistance in creating positive behavior programs for the students. She always bases intervention strategies on the strengths of the students and brings with her a wealth of knowledge  and experience of applied behavior analysis. She doesn't just give suggestions to staff, she rolls up her sleeves and demonstrates how the interactions / interventions should be implemented. She works with students with very challenging behavior and never has she balked at working directly with these students and helping staff implement effective behavior modification strategies. She has attended our CT meetings offering her incredible knowledge about IEP goal writing and effective classroom programming. The Category B Special Education Program at McLean functions much more effectively having Courtney Wolfson as a member of the team.  She works with us to implement strategies and interventions that provide the students with opportunities to achieve to their greatest potential. The date of the experience is not actually truthful, Courtney did not just start being an asset to the program, she was an asset the first day she started working with us many years ago! Thank you Courtney from the entire CAT B Program at McLean!"

Peter Beczkiewicz, Hayfield SS - View the Celebration

"During a busy middle school tech ed. class, Mr. B. was walking around assisting students when he noticed one student get weak in the legs and start slumping over. The student lost consciousness while he was standing up at a machine. Mr. B. quickly sprang into action, caught the student, carefully brought him to the floor, all at the same time keeping his 29 other students calm. He was able to direct a student to get help. His quick thinking, calm demeanor, professionalism, and sincere concern not only kept the student with the medical concern safe, but also kept his entire class safe. EMS arrived quickly and Mr. B. was able to give important details of everything the young student had experienced. We couldn't be more grateful for having a caring citizen and critical thinker at our school like Mr. B."

Jamie Whilden, Graham Road Community Center

"Mrs. Whilden, a visual impairment teacher, took time out of her busy day to speak to my class about Braille. She had a fantastic lesson in which she explained her job, how to read and write Braille, and how to use Braillers. My 1st and 2nd graders were captivated with her lesson! Thank you Mrs. Whilden for making the time in your busy day to squeeze in the lesson for us!"

Rosaleen Sypher, Laurel Hill ES

------

Daniel Freeman, Spring Hill ES

"Mr. Freeman leads the Spring Hill Conservatory, Select Band and through the pandemic has continued to make music a priority keeping the band together (even playing outdoors in the cold following COVID protocols) to honor veterans and for other special occasions. Not only has music been a healing force though the pandemic but his passion, humor and love of his students is inspiring. My son says he LOVES Mr. Freeman. He went out of his comfort zone when asked to try a brand new instrument and now loves playing the tuba. Mr. Freeman brought together students across 4th-6th grade in a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem for the Fairfax County School Board on March 24th. For all these reasons, Mr. Freeman, Conservatory, Select Band Director at Spring Hill Elementary is worthy of FCPS 'CARES' Recognition."

Richard Arthur, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"When our bus had some trouble getting to WSHS to pick us up and take us back to school, Mr. Arthur jumped in to help. First, he reached out to his supervisors to figure out what was going on, then he went into problem solving mode and figured out a plan to get us back to school before the lunch block ended. Ultimately, Mr. Arthur drove us back to school, but not before he checked in with the teacher from his original school to let them know what was going on and make sure they knew they would have a bus waiting when they were ready. Mr. Arthur did not need to help us, but went way above and beyond to do it. He saw a problem, knew he could help figure out a solution, and made it work for everyone. We are so appreciative of him!"

In a year where everyone is tasked beyond their usual role, it has been invaluable to be able to count on Tracy to give me time for feedback, input, planning, co-coaching, and some good belly laughs as well. She fully embodies the mission of the Office of School Support and without our partnership I would be less effective as an instructional coach. Thank you, Tracy, for making me better with every interaction--you're amazing!!"

Andrei Turets, Merrifield Support Center

"Andrei is an FCPS employee who has gone above and beyond at Columbia ES and shows that he cares about making connections with Columbia staff.  Andrei has been to Columbia many times to support plumbing work orders. Often, he is tasked with fixing a plumbing work order, in the middle of a class full of students, or in the hallways during transitions. Andrei ensures that his work is done in an efficient way, without disrupting classroom instruction. He consults with the Columbia staff whose room may have been impacted by the repair regarding how long a repair should take and what impact it may have during the repair. One example of a time Andrei went above and beyond was during a formal recording of a lesson. Andrei ensured that his work would not interfere video recording and took extra steps to work around camera footage. After recording, Andrei connected with staff about what great things he saw during the lesson and showed an interest in building connections in the Columbia community. Columbia ES recognizes Andrei for being an FCPS employee who has gone above and beyond at Columbia."

Lorelei Hills, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"I have a student who has been on homebound services for almost two years. At the beginning of this school year, we went through several teachers before Lorelei Hills started working with the student. She did an amazing job getting to know the student, helping me determine his present levels, and working with the student.  Due to the student being out of school so long, Ms. Hills needed to do some adjustments and supplementing to the lessons provided. She did an amazing job of working with the student and the family. She also was an incredible communicator and gave me timely feedback so that I could make adjustments as well as track progress. When the student returned to school this month, he was ready to reenter the classroom in thanks in large part to Ms. Hills efforts with him over the past year."

"Allison is a treasured addition to the Kings Park ES family. In just her first year at Kings Park, she has shown herself to be easily approachable and reliable to both our students and staff. Daily, I see her floating through the halls, always willing to offer a helping hand in her rare spare time. She fills a vital role as our second counselor, providing support to everyone who needs it, and serves as a welcoming, safe presence for all. Allison radiates a sense of calm and safety, and I hope she knows the impact she has had on my mental health, and on our young students. It is a joy for me to see a novice who enthusiastically loves her job and wants to continue to grow within her role as a school counselor. "Mr. Schulze is a special teacher to me because of how different he is, normally a teacher would joke around a little before focusing on their lesson. However, Mr. Schulze is different, he has a way to catch your attention and keep it. On the first day of school, Mr. Schulze gave us a fun weird lesson about our own mortality, but it was both crazy to experience and enlightening yet fun. Reading is an important part about his class but he doesn't ask us specific things just to make sure we read it, he asks us to explain our thoughts on the book to make sure we understood it. Mr. Schulze is a great teacher and I just wanted to get this out there."

Emily Geary, McLean HS

"My daughter has been lucky enough to be on the McLean High School varsity lacrosse team this year with Coach Geary as the head coach. Coach Geary knew she was going to miss being at a game, and she took the time to write a personal postcard to each player on the team to pass out via the assistant coach prior to the game. This gesture was above and beyond and really meant a lot to the team to hear her thoughtful words as well as a few personal game reminders before hitting the field. We are grateful that Coach Geary and the athletic staff at McLean continue to invest in the players and want the best for them, both on and off the field.  Coach Geary exemplifies attributes of effective coaching, one that promotes growth, focuses on each player's contributions to the team, and is a positive leader for her players."

Mario Portales-Martinez, Lorton Center

"Mario turned a potentially confrontational encounter on an already-stressful Friday, into a pleasant exchange & day-brightener. I was cruising the bus loop waiting for my kid to get the laptop she forgot that morning. I parked in front of the trailers, intending to exit my vehicle to find her. While I parked, I noticed a man discreetly watching me across the bus loop, trying hard to appear disinterested while he monitored my actions. I hollered over a greeting, showed him the device & indicated my intent. He offered the office as a drop spot, I explained she indicated she would come out of her class to grab it. I started walking toward the trailers, and pointed her out to him as she approached, his scrutiny increased, but still he said nothing. After, he said he feels a responsibility for the kids' safety, all day long, and wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I told him I appreciated his efforts both on and off the bus, to help all the kids have better experiences. He didn't think anyone noticed anything but an anonymous driver, schlepping kids around. Obvious he cares about the kids, their safety, and takes pride in a job well done, and I appreciate that you have folks like him looking out for all the kids in our community. Please - let's get Mario noticed!"

Michael Edwards, Lake Braddock SS

"I feel like his teaching is more so involved with students fully understanding the content and he really tries his best to do that. Instead of having a very strict and set curriculum he allows for further progression if they're interested in more math or maybe letting students who fell behind a bit and catch up one on one. Whether it be at the end of each unit or end of each quarter, every student gets through and gets their own share of the positivity that he brings to the classroom everyday."

She has been our son’s teacher for four years, and because of her, our son with significant disabilities loves being in school and is learning how to build his work skills, tolerance, and productivity. Mrs. Rembisz always has a positive, caring attitude, and she works tirelessly to bring out the best in all her students. Throughout the pandemic and online learning, Mrs. Rembisz kept the classes engaging and always made herself available to students and parents for thoughtful feedback and encouragement. We are thankful for and appreciate how Mrs. Rembisz has made such a positive impact on our son’s high school experience. Thank you, Mrs. R.!"

Erin Rinker, Spring Hill ES

"Ms. Rinker makes everyone feel like they are the most special student at Spring Hill Elementary. My early elementary-aged son had a tough time with the transition from virtual to in-person school since he had started kindergarten just months before the pandemic hit and, thus, had spent most of his early education learning at home. Ms. Rinker was the key to helping him have a successful transition back to in-person school. It started with her being the first friendly smile he saw each day, as she greeted the students each morning. Then, one day, she saw that in my son was holding back tears and having a tough time transitioning from home to school.  She brought him to her office, listened to him, and gave him strategies he could understand and implement. He would continue to come talk to her on occasion after that. He found her to be helpful because she displayed such kindness and warmth. He trusted her because she found a way to speak to him in a language that he could understand but also made him feel he was being spoken to as a person and not just a child; she respected him. His favorite strategy was one she taught him to help him worry less and stay in the moment more. "Think of what IS, not what IF." Her small interventions have helped him feel like he is seen and understood; like he has an advocate at school who "gets" him; like he has within himself the strength and resources he needs to succeed. Additionally, as a parent, I've found her to be collaborative and communicative in helping us reinforce these strategies at home. Her interventions (which my son calls "Ms Rinkering" instead of counseling) have turned him around into this confident kid who loves school, is succeeding in the classroom, and making lots of friends. As my son says, sometimes everyone just needs a little bit of "Ms. Rinkering" to feel better! I can think of no better person for the FCPS Cares award than Ms. Rinker."

Diana Fuentes, Forbes Place

"I would like to recognize Diana Fuentes, retirement counselor for ERFC, as an outstanding employee who went above and beyond to assist me with my retirement process. I am retiring the end of this school year and a bit anxious as to making sure I knew, understood, and followed the process for retirement. Let me tell you, there are several steps involved. I had an online appointment with Diana. I rushed home for the meeting, as I thought I had misplaced my paper work folder, which I did end up finding at the start of the meeting. Diana ever so patiently waited for me and calmed me down stating that she would take me through each step of the process. She very clearly went through the step by step processes and cheerfully answered my many questions along the way. She not only assisted me with the ERFC paper work, but also helped with the health insurance information and questions I had about the VRS online forms. I left the meeting feeling happy and grateful for such a patient, caring counselor! Diana made sure I knew she would continue to be available to me, and I had to submit something to her the next day. I tend to over think things, so naturally I had more questions for her. I ended up sending her additional emails where she responded line by line with detail to my redundant questions making sure I had clear answers. She did not once make me feel like I was bothering her and got back to me immediately. She is the ultimate professional, and we are very fortunate to have her work for FCPS!"

Gabrielle Anders, Halley ES

"I want to thank Ms. Anders for her extraordinary work as a teacher who cares not just about academic success but also about social/emotional development. As an example, last night she called home to let me know that a classmate shared a Google Slide file with my son that included mean comments about classmates. Though my son did not participate in the meanness, the document was shared with him and he missed an opportunity to be an upstander to defend others who were targeted. This information allowed me to coach him through situations that were difficult for him, like speaking up and telling a classmate to knock it off when they are being mean. It also gave me a window into some struggles with friendships in class that I hadn't known about, helping me to support my child emotionally. I have an idea how busy Ms. Anders is and how many other parents she chose to call last night. Most teachers wouldn’t take time to loop in a parent about a child's passive role in a conflict, as there are bigger fires to put out and only so many hours in a day. The fact that she invested her own time well beyond the school day allowed me to be more aware of what is going on in my child's social-emotional landscape and created an opportunity for us to support him and encourage his growth in character and integrity. After so much isolation during COVID, living in a neighborhood with no kids his age to play with, my son is struggling more socially than he is academically.  I am so grateful that Ms. Anders is leading her students through difficult social interactions and taking the time to care for their social/emotional growth as well as academics. Thank you, Ms. Anders!"

Beth Schires, Carson MS

Marsha Bliss, Stonecroft Transportation Center

"Ms. Bliss is the most wonderful bus driver who has had our daughters' run for the past five years. She is thoughtful and has circled back with my daughters when we weren't at the bus stop one day. They were old enough to be dropped off, but they were too nervous and Ms. Bliss knew immediately what to do. When Ms. Bliss has to be absent, she always alerts my kids ahead of time so they know when a substitute will be there. She even wrote a special note to one of my daughters when the absence was longer than a day or two. This is invaluable to my kids who thrive on consistency and just love to have Ms. Bliss around.  Today one of my daughters said, "Ms. Bliss is just the best bus driver! I feel bad for other students who are on a different bus." Ms. Bliss, we thank you for your kindness, thoughtfulness and cheerfulness."

"Brian is a wealth of information and took the time to walk me through multiple parts of the EL Portfolio. He answered every question I had and followed up with me to share additional resources. In a time when we can easily communicate by email, it was refreshing to have Brian reach out for a phone call. I greatly appreciate his time and expertise."

Pam Lieber, Kings Park ES

"Pam Lieber is an amazing Instructional Assistant. I have worked with her at Kings Park Elementary for over 20 years and she has supported students in so many ways. During our STEAM/Lab special, she helps every student in my room with enthusiasm! She has coded, build structures, and most recently help our 3rd graders create moving vehicles using simple machines. Thank you Pam for your continued support over the years and especially this year!"

Weris Jama, Johnson MS

"Jama has been helping ESOL department with her Arabic language expertise. She understands the students, families, and their culture really well. She not only helps with reaching out to the parents by making personal phone calls, arranging meetings but also connecting with the students one on one to help them around school. Even with her busy schedule managing the front office, she has gone above and beyond that students, teachers, and parents feel comfortable sharing their concerns with her and she has always made herself available to provide the support needed. Thank you so much, Jama!"

"Ms. Horn joined FCPS and Key Center School for the 2021-2022 school year. This is the first year we have had a Music Teacher at our school. Ms. Horn works tirelessly to meet the needs of our students who have medical and behavioral challenges. She sings, plays many musical instruments, plans school social events, participates in schoolwide assemblies and is always helping to transport students during the day at arrival and dismissal. Ms. Horn has brought a musical curriculum  to our program and the staff and students benefit greatly from her well planned and engaging lessons. Thank you Johanna!"

Josh Douds, Centreville ES

"Mr. Douds CARES. Each and every student's success and well-being matters to him. He is always willing to meet with parents and listen to parent perspectives.  They might walk in with worries and concerns but they always walk out with a brighter perspective and hope for their child at Centreville Elementary. He stays after school hours to attend Community Conversations, a program at Centreville for our Korean parents, to provide information in their home language. This is also a platform for parents to ask questions and get answers to those questions on the spot. He goes above and beyond in all areas for his students. Thank you Mr. Douds!"

Tiffany Haffner, Franconia ES

"We are so grateful for my daughter's 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Haffner. This year has been challenging, but she has created a safe, welcoming, fun and exciting environment in which to learn. This particular class has run into hurdle after hurdle and Mrs. Haffner has handled each day with grace, kindness and patience, not to mention absolute competence. She is teaching the kids so much academically, but even more in her excellent example of making the best out of every day and meeting the needs of her students exactly where they are. On top of it all, she is constantly communicating with parents and families above and beyond what is required, making us all partners in our kid's education. This is especially important this year as physical and safety restrictions have limited how much contact parents have with the school. She takes the time to make sure we are not just informed, but engaged and equipped through instructional videos she records for kids to use at home (the math videos have been crucial in helping understand concepts) and providing regular snapshots from classroom activities that bring a smile to the parent's faces. I know she makes learning fun, but it's amazing to actually SEE the kids interacting and learning. I can't thank her enough for making this year exceptional."

Cristy Luksik, Mantua ES

"Looking back at COVID and the impact it had on my school-aged children, I am even more sure now that Cristy Luksik is flat out amazing and we are lucky to have (had) her as a 1st grade teacher! She already stood out as being smart, kind, organized, and truly passionate about teaching, but in March, when COVID shut down the schools, Mrs. Luksik rallied so fast and so well and her students benefited greatly! Whereas my older children waited weeks to have any communication or schooling, my first grader had a teacher who jumped right in. She recorded daily videos of herself which she emailed to the parents. She read to them daily and gave them a few optional mini assignments. Some of them were "pencil and paper", like writing a few sentences about something they had read or done. Others were activities, like the day she showed herself building a fort in her home and climbing in it to read a book, then encouraged the students to build a fort in their homes and read a book. Another day she built an obstacle course in her home and asked the children to build one for themselves and send her a video of it (to which she responded and commented) and she made it clear to the parents that they should do as little or as much as they could manage. I still wonder if she realized how much she impacted her students, she continued the students' education but she did SO much more. She showed (continued to show because she was of course already a wonderful teacher) her students how important and fun learning is; she provided the children with something to do while their parents "figured" things out but understood if they couldn't always do it; she maintained some "normalcy" in a time of unsurity;  and she showed the children how much she cared about their education. Most importantly, though, Mrs. Luksik showed the children how much she cared about them. Just being able to see and hear their teacher when they weren't able to see most other people in their life was huge! I hope she knows that, while the school year of 2019-20 had its rockiness, Mrs. Luksik was the boulder that stood firm for her students!"

They are all hard working, care deeply for the content and ALL the students, are willing to try anything, and work together incredibly well. It is so comforting to work with a group of people who are just as passionate about kids learning as they are about math! She goes above and beyond to make everyone at KP feel supported every day, not only with urgent matters, but also with guidance and advice for teachers. Although I know she is always busy, she has the ability to make you feel like you're the most important person when you're with her. Over the two-day event, more than 150 seniors registered to vote. Pat’s efforts exemplify his emphasis on the real world application of our curriculum and instilling civic duty within our students. Susan Song, Mantua ES

"My son was having a VERY difficult morning, conflicts with peers and anxiety about school and his medical conditions were getting him down, so much that he couldn't step into the school for morning SACC without becoming very emotional. While I was sitting in the car with him to help him find a bit of peace, I emailed Ms. Song to let her know what was going on and request that my son be pulled at some point in the school day to chat. It was early when I sent that email. And no more than 10 minutes later from my hitting 'send', Ms. Song was waiting at the SACC door for my son. After walking him to class and chatting with him a bit, which really helped to lower his anxiety level and boost his confidence, she emailed me back right as school started to let me know how he was doing. The kindness she shows my son each time she interacts with him contributes greatly to the loving environment Mantua ES provides and it makes me happy to know that he has the support of such a caring and kind person. Ms. Song is a great asset to the Mantua ES community and we can't express enough how much we appreciate her."

Richard Hang, Mantua ES

"My son has had trouble adjusting to the hierarchy amongst the 5th graders this year and was hesitant to speak up for himself. Mr. Hang quickly stepped in to assess the situation and immediately setup one-on-one lunch bunches with my son and each of the children he was having difficulty interacting with. These lunch bunches have benefitted my son in huge ways, he's more confident in sharing information about conflicts so that adults can help when needed, more confident in speaking to his peers that he has conflict with, more confident in being his own champion and dealing with conflict with his peers on his own, and more confident in speaking to his peers about a major medical condition that he has. In addition to fostering better peer relationships for my son, these sessions have also created a very noticeable reduction in anxiety for my son, so much so that he's expressed it to me on his own. Mantua is blessed to have Mr. Hang as a counselor - he's a gem!! Really, we appreciate him so much!"

"Margarita is the bus driver for Bus 6 Fairhill Elementary and she stops at Hargrove Court and Hunter Road. On this particular day, the bus came to a stop at Hargrove court and the unbelievable happened. A sinkhole literally formed and caused one side of the bus, one tire, to sink into it. Margarita quickly gathered all the students off the bus and got them to safety. She was so amazing in that she stayed calm and helped the little ones stay safe. The children, especially the little ones, were visibly worried but she helped them so much. She literally got down to their level to talk to them and tell them everything was going to be ok. She was calming them down, and making sure each child was ok. I would never want such an incident to happen, but I am so thankful that we had the best bus driver to handle the situation. Margarita  stayed on the scene until 7pm or later, until the bus was hauled away. "The teachers at my building were suddenly unable to use a technology tool. This tool was particularly important as it allows students with disabilities to access instruction. I had completed an IT ticket and sent multiple additional pieces of information in attempt to resolve the issues. Several days passed without resolution.  When I called the service desk on 2.28.22 to follow up, I was lucky to have my call picked up by Vince. He took the time to review all ticket information and determine the actions taken to date. Vince assured me that he would work to connect me to others who could help with the resolution. He called back multiple times to keep me apprised of status and made sure that the issue was picked up by those who did ultimately resolve it. Vince's customer service was greatly appreciated. He went above and beyond to understand a complex issue and make sure that it was resolved ASAP, assuring student access to instruction. Thanks so much, Vince!"

Hy Au, Terre Centre ES

"Mr. Au is a school hero. The preschoolers love watching him in his many roles. One day he is a plumber, another a builder, and this week a farmer in their eyes. They were amazed every time he shows up to help us fix a “problem”. We love him for all he does and the extra mile he always goes. Thank you Mr. Au for always coming to the rescue! TC is so lucky to have you!"

Jon Mitchell, South County MS

"Mr. Mitchell is a SCMS mustang, through and through. He is always willing to help students, staff and myself. We've had an increase of student misbehavior lately, and while these students did not fall into Mr. Mitchell's grade level responsibilities, he quickly addressed behavior concerns and investigated incidents when I was unavailable. On a regular basis, he also documents everything and notifies all stakeholders in a timely manner which completes the whole process. Mr. Mitchell is such an asset to our school and I'm thankful to work with him."

Debra Trotto and Daniel Drickey, Hayfield SS

"Ms. Trotto and Mr. Drickey are absolutely to be commended. My understanding from speaking with my student is that they are preparing a second long term substitute teacher this year to teach for a teacher out on disability. From talking to my student, these two have not only gotten these teachers ready to teach the class but provided lessons, support and in some cases maintained a gradebook for classes of students that aren't their own. I have received communication from them regarding the changes and when asking my student who they were, my student shared with me that Mr. Drickey and Ms. Trotto also covered the classes for the first two months of the school year while the search for the original substitute was being conducted. They both gave up planning periods to teach these classes but as my student noted, they did it with a smile on their face and energetic attitude. With everything going on in the world, we consider ourselves blessed to have teachers like these two in our student's educational journey. I can only imagine what my student's experience would have been without these two amazing educators and I hope they are recognized for their selfless and amazing work at Hayfield! I know that we appreciate them in our home."

Erin Buhl, Wakefield Forest ES

"In a year full of change, constantly evolving transitions, and uncertainty, Mrs. Buhl has gone above and beyond to support her classroom of learners. She is a warm, nurturing person who also holds high expectations for her students and is exactly who I would want working with and influencing my first grader. She values classroom community and kindness and has worked tirelessly to build this in her classroom. She also takes the time to truly get to know her students and form a close bond. For my sometimes timid child, Mrs. Buhl has truly been her role model and a person on whom she knows she can depend. Mrs. Buhl creates positive and creative opportunities for learning and makes school a fun place for her students. My daughter is consistently coming home with wonderful stories about what she is learning in school and unique work that goes well beyond worksheets. It is clear that Mrs. Buhl puts her heart and soul into her classroom and work. I have also been repeatedly impressed with Mrs. Buhl's desire and willingness to partner with our family in an effort to work together to help my child reach her full potential. She is always happy to discuss any questions or concerns that I have and I am continually impressed with her humble demeanor and openness. It is clear that she wants what is best for her students and as a parent, I feel so fortunate to know that each day my child is at school, she is supported and valued. My child's world and Wakefield Forest Elementary school are a better place because of Mrs. Buhl and we are incredibly grateful!"

This sort of support from Mr. Sterling (and others) helps to give me confidence to in turn help others without stress. I am very grateful."

What a spectacular educator and advocate!"

Karen Robinson, Forestville ES

"Karen is a dedicated ESOL teacher who also teaches computer lab. She kindly took the time to meet with a brand new STC from another school (me!) who was feeling overwhelmed, walked me through WIDA testing procedures, patiently and thoroughly answered all of my questions on multiple questions, and continues to be available for support. Her kind and patient demeanor quieted my self-doubt and helped me support my ESOL team. I know that she instills the same level of confidence in her students at Forestville."

She went out of her way and was so kind the entire time. Thank you for making our school a great caring place!"

Jessica Scharpf, Ravensworth ES

"Mrs. Scharpf, 1st grade teacher at Ravensworth elementary school. She is caring and dedicated. My son was recently paused from instruction for 10 days. He was the only student on pause during this time. Mrs. Scharpf had virtual learning for him every morning. She, herself, had just returned from her own extended leave; so she had to catch up the entire class while giving virtual instruction too. I appreciated her extra time to make sure my son felt included each day. My son was sad about not being in school; she had a few kids say hello on zoom. She also had small group reading circles that he participated in. Once he returned she checked in to review the topics he missed. He felt welcomed and cared for during this time. Thank you Mrs. Scharpf."

Janet Babic, West Potomac HS

"As the school SBTS, Janet has gone beyond the "call of duty" in helping me connect 2021 to 2022. Of the many programs I relied on last year for developing curriculum in SPED that were easily available in the old system, I had great difficulty in finding how to access these within Schoology. In addition to the standard training available in MyPDE, Janet spent extra hours with me showing me where "Everything" was, especially eCart. Where this may seem obvious to others, I worked with other County personnel to find these links for weeks, unsuccessfully. THANK YOU JANET."
