FCPS Cares of the Month Recipients

Central Office: Mark Hyer, Sprague Technology Center

  • "Mark Hyer went above and beyond to assist me with setup and breakdown for the vendors at the 2018 Great Beginnings Summer Institute that took place on August 13 and 14. In a brief conversation, when picking up materials at TMPC for the event, we spoke about logistics and how and who transforms the school into a "one-stop shop" for new teachers. On the morning of the August 10th, Mark surprised me and was at South County HS (he even beat me there) to assist me with lugging the tables and chairs around the school for this huge event.  On both Monday and Tuesday, Mark (TMPC was a vendor) would check-in with me periodically to see if I needed help moving tables as some vendors only attended on Monday. On Tuesday late afternoon, as this successful event was concluding, Mark placed the pallets for the tables, and bins for the chairs strategically around SOCO HS. He then assisted me with the entire breakdown process (removing tablecloths, tables, chairs, signs, trash and more). Mark Hyer represents everything FCPS wants in an employee. He collaborates and builds relationships with everyone he meets (students, staff & vendors). He is respectful, upbeat, caring and always goes above and beyond to make any situation or an event like Great Beginnings - Summer Institute a total success. This program has multiple layers of logistics and Mark was attentive, responsive and always available with a smile on his face. This too showcased the quality of collaboration between offices and schools, and the quality work happening in FCPS. The Great Beginnings Summer Institute was an enriching, engaging experience for new teachers and reinforced that ordinary things create extraordinary results! Thank you, Mark, for making my part in this process so much easier."

- Shelli Wayland, Gatehouse Administration Center

Region 1: Francisco Quintanilla, Herndon MS

  • "Our Building Supervisor has been with us almost a year.  Francisco comes to work positively every day- always communicating and helping support all staff so that students and the community feel welcome.  He collaborates with the After School Specialist, the engineer, the TSSPec, his staff and the administration to make sure the important work of the summer happens and everyone in the building is supported, all while preparing for opening school in a few weeks.  He has really established himself as a leader in our school."

- Karyn Niles, Herndon MS

-------

Region 2: Sherryanne Sooknanan, Braddock ES (Pictured)

  • "Thank you Sherry for all that you do for the Braddock staff, students, and community. As an Administrative Assistant, you wear numerous hats and juggle many jobs each day. You exemplify professionalism and teamwork!  You are so personable and efficient in all that you do. No matter the job, problem or situation, you embrace it without hesitation. Your work ethic is beyond reproach. No matter the job, you roll up your sleeves, strap on your “boots,” and get to it. You continually go above and beyond the call of duty to support the day-to-day operation of our school from a “space and place called love.” You make Braddock Elementary a place where students and staff SOAR like Eagles! Thanks for making a difference!"

- Mattie Fallen, Braddock ES

-------

Region 3: Lourdes Salas, Lee HS

  • "Administrative Assistant, Lourdes Salas, is an indispensable member of the Lee High School library team. The Lee High School staff and librarians were blown away by all her efforts to improve the library over the summer.  Every storage area and shelf were organized. The new books are processed and ready for students to check out. Creative book displays with inviting signs were sprinkled throughout the library.  She always challenges herself and take on new jobs in the library and go above and beyond. This summer, an example of this is her approach to the library book inventory, where books in the collection are checked. This is a painstaking process that involves attention to detail. When asked to inventory a large portion of the nonfiction collection over the summer, Lourdes replied, "I think we should inventory all the nonfiction books so that everything will be in order.” Lourdes takes pride in her work and makes the library a welcoming space that is READY for the new school year.  Lee High School is lucky to have her!"

- Mimi Marquet & Lisa Koch, Lee HS

-------

Region 4: Jennie Hwangpo, Centreville HS

  • "As the yearbook sponsor, I was tasked with preselling yearbooks at our Back to School Festival. It’s our biggest sale night of the year. This year, one of my students got sick, and another had to leave early, so it was just me and an extremely long line of parents. Jennie saw me struggling, and she dropped everything to help, first going up to my room to grab more receipt books that I needed, and then sitting down with me to sell the yearbooks. Jennie is a perfect example of a person who is always willing to help someone in need. She always has the best interest of our school in mind, and she goes out of her way to be kind and supportive."

- Marissa Perrone, Centreville HS

-------

Region 5: Kirsten Wheeler-Hassan, Chantilly HS

  • "Ms. Wheeler-Hassan has been very supportive of my mother and me for the past 3 years. She consented to me returning to US Geological Survey when I returned from Wilson Workforce and Rehabilitation Center, even solving a bus transportation crisis. Ms. Wheeler-Hassan has even been supportive of my mom and me when my father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. She even helped me get a full-time job at USGS. She has been a great assistant to me."

- Jared Lem, Chantilly HS

Other FCPS Cares of the Month Submissions for Summer 2018

Aydalina Aguilar, Chesterbrook ES

"Ms. Aguilar went above and beyond with her duties at our school during the first week of school. One of the regular custodian staff was absent the entire week and Ms. Aguilar worked hard to pick up the slack and make sure that all the classrooms were cleaned and ready for the next day. At the same time she had to take out the many, many school supply boxes that had to be broken down and thrown out. The first week of school is always very busy and a lot more to do than normal and she did her job with a smile."

- Ruth Ott, Chesterbrook ES

-------

Shunnie Chough, Whitman MS

Tracie Thomas, Energy Zone Food Service Center

"On behalf of the students and staff of Westlawn Elementary School, I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Tracie Thomas for her steadfast support of our school.  She and her team provided nearly 1,000 barbeque meals to our community during our Back to School Night and Open House Fair on August 23rd. They served our students, staff, and families with a smile and even set up a table outside to provide information about Food and Nutrition Services programs.  Additionally, this morning was the first day of our Breakfast in the Classroom service.  When I walked into the building at 7:00am, Tracie and her team of supervisors were already busy working alongside our kitchen staff, packing up coolers and organizing everything so that the program kicked off without a hitch.  The supervisors were stationed throughout the school, answering questions, explaining details, and providing a friendly, helpful hand whenever needed. Tracie has been such a pleasure to work with since she was assigned to us last year.  From providing training, supporting our new cafeteria manager, and helping us serve our school community healthy and delicious food, she has helped to make Westlawn a more welcoming place for everyone. We are so pleased to be working with Tracie, and look forward to many more successful events this year."

The earlier part of this month, you were able to secure a truck load of donated, brand new Lego kits for our students and staff. Last week, we met our newest partners—The George Mason University Girls’ Soccer Team. Seeing the team interact with our parents and students at our 2018 Open House was something special. We look forward to the team working with and mentoring our students. Thanks for making a difference!"

Thank you for your hard work and leadership. You and your team continue to go above and beyond the call of duty to keep our 1959, classic school building looking like a new one. Derek Kelley, Willow Oaks

"I needed a critical friend to coach me through some issues on how to approach a situation.  Derek not only made himself available, but did a great job listening and providing feedback for my personal and professional growth. His paraphrasing facilitated my thinking through the situation and how to best approach the problem that I was having. It seems like a small thing, however for him to take his time and discuss this was a big thing to me..."

- Timothy Brown, Fairfax HS

-------

Ayman Berasko, Merrifield Support Center

"Ayman Berasko is a real hero for our school, he always comes to our rescue during what seems like the worst of conditions. Working in HVAC must be difficult since everyone wants the issue fixed immediately but Ayman is always patient, kind and diligent in solving the problem. He is great about communicating  the status of the problem and ends every interaction with "my pleasure". We want Ayman to know that his work goes noticed and is greatly appreciated."

-------

Carlos Recinos Flores, Lorton Center

"At dismissal from our New Student Orientation, there was confusion by students regarding which bus they should get on to return home. Mr. Recinos was driving an overflow bus for one route. He saw that we had a few students who were still not on a bus and without hesitation, he took action. He offered to take students from 3 different routes home. Not only did this alleviate buses having to return to Irving to pick up the students, his action and kindness also helped calm the nerves of our new 7th grade students. We are so appreciative of Mr. Recinos' willingness to literally go the extra mile (and beyond) to get our students home safely! Mr. Recinos definitely represents the "FCPS Cares" spirit!"

- Cindy Conley, Irving MS

Luis Villalta, Clearview ES

"A child became sick on my bus on the way into Clearview Elementary School. I asked for a mop and bucket to clean it up so I could get to my next school. Fortunately, the mop came attached to Luis Villalta, building supervisor, who jumped onto the bus with the best attitude. He took over and made sure that he cleaned the bus thoroughly so the next kids would have a clean, safe bus. He wanted to make sure that he was able to finish so the next run was not delayed. He was positive and professional the whole time he was working on the bus. I was very fortunate to have met Luis, who by his example, showed me what it is to be the best in FCPS. Clearview has many professionals, and one of the best is Mr. Luis Villalta."

Dana Gorman, Lake Braddock SS

"I had the pleasure of sitting in on Ms. Gorman's first day of class, and WOW - she absolutely nailed it! She created a learning activity that was so engaging while at the same time reinforced her core values as a teacher, the division's mission and integrated technology. Students were visibly communicating and collaborating all over the place. What I loved most was that Ms. Gorman's  explicitly taught and reinforced ways to properly communicate and collaborate when explaining the activity. She even modeled it by having a station where groups of students could sit down  to get to know her! It was amazing to observe. Awesome job, Ms. Gorman!"

-  Brett Garner, Lake Braddock SS

-------

Shannon Stapleton, Falls Church HS

"Ms. Shannon Stapleton went above and beyond to accommodate my son who suffered for many years with School and Social Anxiety. She made him feel welcome and would always try to remind him how special he was to her and all the wonderful Staff at Falls Church HS . -------

Janet Hampton-Loomis, Lorton Center

"Janet Hampton-Loomis went above and beyond to ensure that transportation was in place for a student with disabilities by the first day of school.  The form was not completed on time by school staff (for various reasons),  and the original estimate was that transportation would not be set up until mid-week or the end of this first week of school.  Janet Hampton-Loomis worked over the weekend to ensure that transportation was ready for this student, and countless, nameless others,  so that the much needed special education services could continue as required and the relationship with the parents remained positive.  While she could not do this for all of the students for whom forms were not submitted in time, it is extremely appreciated that she was able to make it work for this young man.  Thank you, Janet, for helping the school year get off on the right foot for this student and the others for whom you have helped!!"

- Ellie Stack, Willow Oaks

-------

Charlotte Petty, Cunningham Park ES

"Today I ran into my daughter's PE teacher, Ms. Petty, at a local restaurant. I was reminded of how much I enjoyed working with Ms. Petty throughout the year. There were many times that I needed her help with the gym for PTA assemblies or with borrowing PE equipment for class parties. Ms. Petty was always happy to help. She showed flexibility and generosity. I also loved that she would remember important events in my life and ask me about them when I saw her."

- a parent at Cunningham Park ES

-------

Phillip Kancianic, Cunningham Park ES

"Today I ran into my daughter's old music teacher, Dr. K, at a local restaurant. I was reminded of the many afternoons my daughter would come home from school talking about what she was learning in Dr. K's class. I also remember the many afternoons she would come home and practice the songs she learned from him on our small xylophone. My daughter loved Dr. K's class. Clearly, he has a passion for his work and an awesome ability to connect with his students!"

Maria Tedesco, Willow Oaks

"This July, the OSEI was down a few administrative assistants due to a variety of reasons. During this timeframe, Mrs. Tedesco filled in with a task which was extremely time-sensitive. Special appreciation to Mrs. Tedesco for sending out the requested letters/emails to the Directors of Special Education at a variety of other school systems in a very timely manner with very little notice. In addition to sending the letters out, Mrs. Tedesco also quickly made edits to the form which was included in the emails. Lastly, Mrs. Tedesco managed the responses in a very professional manner. Mrs. Tedesco’s professionalism, clear communication, and support are much appreciated! Thank you, Maria!!!

Elyse Brunais, Franklin MS

"Our daughter was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma half way through her 8th grade school year at Franklin Middle School. Obviously this was devastating news, and we had no idea where we were headed. Mrs. Brunais immediately reached out to us and offered us options and flexibility on the path forward. Mrs. Brunais was very helpful in explaining our options for home schooling, in schooling, and provided us with flexibility, which allowed us to tend to what mattered most, our daughter’s health. Alexandra Bryan, Lake Braddock SS

"Lake Braddock Secondary School hosted the K-12 social studies in-service this year.  The day involves nearly 1000 teachers and presenters from outside organizations who engage in 2 distinct events (MS and HS from 7:30 - noon and ES from 12:30 - 4:00).  Throughout the planning (which started last June) Alexandra Bryan made sure that the facility was in the best shape for our kick-off.  I recall our initial meeting with Alex in June when she mapped out the space for our expansive program.  We used both floors, dozens of classrooms, multiple conference spaces, both cafeterias, the auditorium and library etc. Since then she remained a calming, informed, and reliable point of contact. For a team who comes from outside the actual building, this is exactly what we need to organize a meaningful experience for our teachers. On the day of the event, Alexa was there to continue her support.  By that time, if Alex said it was getting done, there was no need to ask her again. Because of her help, we were able to focus on the program and the needs of teachers for the start of the year.  For this, the K-12 team is extremely grateful."

- Craig Perrier, Willow Oaks

-------

Teri Hampton, Lake Braddock SS

"Lake Braddock Secondary School hosted the K-12 social studies in-service this year. The day involves nearly 1000 teachers and presenters from outside organizations who engage in 2 distinct events (MS and HS from 7:30 - noon and ES from 12:30 - 4:00).  Throughout the planning (which started last June) Teri Hampton went above and beyond to make our in-service successful. Leading up to the day Teri was a reliable source of information, troubleshooter, and connector. During the event, she seemed to be everywhere. Any task, large or small, was met with confidence and enthusiasm.  For a team who comes from outside the actual building, this is comforting and motivating. In short, we knew that what we asked or needed would get done.  Teri, we need a fan. Done. Teri, tech support for AV issues. Done.  Teri, can you get
students to sell concessions. Done. Because of her help, we were able to focus on the program and the needs of teachers for the start of the year. For this, the K-12 team is extremely grateful."

- Craig Perrier, Willow Oaks

-------

Amy Reznick, Willow Oaks

"Ms. Reznick has a gift for editing and frequently helps our department to put out the best product possible.  She recently spent hours helping us to revise a large resource guide. We are so excited to share this with others and could not have done it without her! Thanks, Amy!"

- Ann Long, Willow Oaks

-------

Jen Fier, Kings Glen ES

"Jen was a huge help at our Kings Glen Open House to several of our Spanish speaking families.  In the middle of a very busy and hectic open house, Jen came to our rescue helping to interpret for some of our families that were trying to complete their registration process.  She took the time to carefully explain things to all of them in a very friendly and helpful manner.  We so appreciate her willingness to help communicate this information to our families."

- Chris Kamerow, Kings Glen ES

-------

Julie Rosenau, Sprague Technology Center

"I met Ms. Julie Rosenau during the 2017-2018 school year because she was a volunteer mentor for one of my first graders  Not only did she go above and beyond for this student, but she was and continues to be an ongoing support for myself and the needs of my classroom. She has given her time, provided supplies, and prepped materials to benefit the first graders at Annandale Terrace. Ms. Rosenau, I am so grateful for all of your help. Your time and efforts are very much appreciated!"

- Hannah Miller, Annandale Terrace ES

-------

Marian Martin, Parklawn ES

"This is my 6th start-of-the-school-year at Parklawn. For our team of specialists [art, library, LTC, music, physEd, and tech], getting and preparing multiple class lists have been a very time-consuming job for each of us. This year, Marian Martin, our building's tech guru, was able to access the building's student database and create a very well organized and easy to use database of student information. She has literally saved each of us hours of time. Particularly with our building's ESOL initiative, with 51% of our students speaking a second language at home, having this information included on our class lists will also allow us to better serve the language needs of our diverse student body. Thank you, Marian, and "Bravo!""

- Tim Kloth, Parklawn ES

-------

Keri Mina, Cunningham Park ES

"Keri has made an immediate impact at Cunningham Park as the school's new school-based technology specialist. In particular, she has spent countless hours in the last two weeks adding sprucing up the school website by swapping in new photos, adding an online attendance form, unifying grade level pages, creating a beautiful student resources page, and just really taking ownership of the site. As a result, the Cunningham Park ES website has all of the bells and whistles that the new platform offers. The announcements and events that she has added perfectly entice the viewer to continue to delve deeper into the site and learn about the school."

- Bryan Buser, Gatehouse Administration Center

-------

Scott Larson, Sideburn Support Center
