FCPS CARES of the Month Recipients

Central Office

Paul Dallas, Gatehouse Admin Center

"A HUGE SHOUT to Officer Dallas.Thank you for coming into the building over the weekend. Sorry for being that person and having balloons deflate that set off the motion detector. Your willingness to come in at 2:12 a.m. to figure out why the alarm was going off in the building, just shows your dedication for FCPS. Thank you again for keeping us safe!"

Region 1

Tracy Bromberg, Thoreau MS

"Ms. Bromberg was an exceptionally motivating supervisor and organized school leader. As a teacher in her administrative department (science) at Thoreau Middle School, I always wanted to do my best because I knew she expected quality academic instruction and classroom management. Any time I had a question, she would follow up to ensure that I was supported and had every tool I needed for my students' well-being. Ms. Bromberg was always helping a student or staff member and, especially in the world after the pandemic, providing the structure kids needed to return to learning. I enjoyed working as a long-term substitute teacher for her at Thoreau Middle School and she is one of my all-time favorite mentor supervisors. I was a teacher at Thoreau but I felt like Ms. Bromberg's student; I learned so much from her!"

Aaron Kohrs, Thoreau MS

------

Tracy Bromberg, Thoreau MS

"Tracy has always been amazingly supportive of fellow school-based administrators. Whenever I reach out with a question, she immediately responds. If she says she can connect in ten minutes, she calls in five. She shares ideas and files, all with great skill and a fabulous sense of humor. She naturally builds capacity in others. I am so thankful to her."

Maureen McLoughlin, Cooper MS

Region 2

Cecia Cortes Sanchez, Davis Career Center

"Cecia is one of our wonderful Public Health Training Assistants (PHTA) here at the Davis Center and she consistently goes above and beyond to help create and support a caring culture for all students. Each morning and afternoon she is at our Kiss N' Ride ready to greet students and get them safely into the building or back to their families and home. The familiarity of a friendly face and the consistency of a routine are often so critical in successfully accessing a good day and Cecia's presence at our main door is the face of success for some (many? most?) of our students and families each day. She possesses numerous other qualities that make her a dynamic colleague and a wonderful support to students in the classroom; however, I believe it is important to note the impact of simply being present. Thank you for your presence and impact in our community of learners, Cecia!"

James Carlisle, Woodlawn ES (Pictured) - View the celebration!

"Mr. Carlisle is constantly putting his students and his community first. He is very active in several roles around the school. He created a book club for students after school to support literacy skills and build a love of reading in students at Woodlawn. He has also restarted our PTA with parent involvement. He currently helped get a club started called Roots and Shoots that supports students and their love for the environment and the community. He had a speaker come to the school to discuss books his grade level was reading in regards to Conservation. The speaker has a connection to Jane Goodall's Foundation and there was student interest to start Roots and Shoots. In his poetry unit, Mr. Carlisle had his students write a poem about what they dream about. He took their sentences and together they created a very moving poem that is displaced in the fourth grade hallway to create and foster community. Currently, he has created a knitting lunch bunch to support several student interests in his class in regards to fashion and design. All that is just the tip of the iceberg. Mr. Carlisle is always encouraging co-workers and supports their ideas for creativity and community building as well. He is a great leader and resource to the Woodlawn Community and deserves to be recognized for his support, energy and time he has put into Woodlawn, the students and their families."

Latrice Betz, Newington Forest ES - View the celebration!

"Yesterday I received an email from Latrice Betz regarding my son. My son was eating lunch and she happened to see him unresponsive and flushed and asked if he was ok. She noticed he was choking and immediately ran to his aid and was able to dislodge his food and saved his life. She was my hero yesterday for saving my son and should be recognized as not only a valuable employee with FCPS but as a valuable human being that went above and beyond for my son."

Christine Lee, Eagle View ES - View the Celebration!

"Ms. Christine Lee, 6th grade teacher at Eagle View Elementary, continues to go above and beyond with support for her students. Ms. Lee has been supporting a student who is has experienced trauma and has been a listening ear for them. When speaking with the parent of this student, the parent couldn’t express enough how thankful she is for Ms. Lee having her child in class and being an "angel" for them. She described Ms. Lee as an amazing person and shared her child is extremely lucky to have her as a teacher.  We are so fortunate to have a teacher like Ms. Lee who is committed, caring, and truly makes a difference!"

Ann Withington, Homebound Office

"Ann has been working with one of our homebound students for approximately 4-months now. She repeatedly and consistently goes above and beyond to collaborate with our students' special education team, serve as the liaison between the school and parents, attend staffing and IEP meetings, collect data, and support whenever and wherever possible. We couldn't be more thankful to have the opportunity to work alongside her as we navigate collaboration between a large school team and a virtual, homebound student. We couldn't do it without Ann."

Sara Harper, Great Falls ES

------

Jennifer Murray, Union Mill ES

"Union Mill Elementary PE Teacher, Jenny Murray planned and executed an amazing Kids Heart Challenge for the students of UMES. She planned a month (February is heart health month) full of activities, morning announcements and lessons where our students learned to be heart healthy. The activities culminated in an evening of heart healthy fun for families all over the school (including rock wall climbing and an obstacle course) that was packed even on a rainy night!! It also resulted in raising over $29,000 for the American Heart Association! Jenny is a true asset to the UMES students, school and community as not only does she do it all well (she is extremely organized) but she also does it with a smile!"

Ami Schroder, Union Mill ES

Liane Jones, Lake Braddock SS

"Mrs. Jones is an incredibly dedicated teacher and an amazingly kind human being! She opens up her classroom after school multiple days every week to students of all math classes (not just her own), for assistance and support. She takes the time to get to know all the students she interacts with individually to help them learn and succeed in the best way possible. In addition, she sponsors a number of afterschool clubs and gives all students she meets support and a safe and comfortable space to gather. She is a truly giving and caring educator!"

Catherine Phelps, Lake Braddock SS

------

Mario Portales Martinez, Lorton Transportation Center

"Both the driver, Mario and the attendant on Special Education Bus 99 for the afternoon run at Brookfield are AMAZING! We recently had two students that required special transportation. This is a change in routine for them that could have proved challenging, but has been amazing because of the work of Mario and the attendant have done to build relationships. They greet our students by name with INCREDIBLE excitement at the end of every day. They cheer for them to board the bus and ask how their day has been. They are a bright spot, not just for our students, but for me! At the end of the day, after most of our students have left, it brings me such joy to watch these two incredible employees reach out to our students (and to see our students light up when they are greeted in such a way!) These two employees ensure our students are cared for and safe at the end of their school days and I'm so grateful for the love and joy they bring to their work every day!"

Margaret Sisler, Brookfield ES

------

Edidiong Utuk, Lake Braddock SS

"My son adores Ms. Utuk's class and has learned so much about note taking and how to study. He recently had an emotional moment in class, and told me about it. Serena Perricone, Kings Park ES

"My fellow special education IA, Serena, is someone who exemplifies what it takes to work with SPED children. She has the determination to figure out how to facilitate a child’s success in learning and beyond. She is patient and composed when dealing with children’s behaviors and is always striving to figure out what the class, or an individual student, needs to thrive. Serena has undertaken the bulk of responsibilities for a particularly demanding student in our SPED class. Her efforts have allowed this student to be consistently cared for in all aspects of life. From developing programs to help this student get through academic work, to providing this student with clothing and school materials to help the student be comfortable and ready to learn. Serena sees a concern and tackles it time and time again. Her efforts to manage this student’s challenging behaviors have also allowed the other staff to better meet the needs of the rest of the class, making her a great team player. On top of this, as a wife and mother to four, Serena has had to navigate tough family health struggles and throughout it all, she shows up to the classroom ready to work hard to advocate for even more humans. I am grateful to work with Serena and admire her many years of devoted service to the children in our school."

Lauren Thorley, Kings Park ES

------

Jacqueline Radin, Flint Hill ES

"Ms. Radin is truly the epitome of "FCPS cares." Not only is she an outstanding educator, but kindness and caring are at the root of who she is and how she teaches. She exudes positivity, warmth and compassion in every thing she does and every lesson she teaches. She goes above and beyond to make sure each student has the tools they need for success. She instills confidence, empathy and caring in her students and the school community. She is a school leader and has a profound impact on others. We are SO incredibly fortunate that she is part of our school!"

Micol Levi-Senigaglia, Flint Hill ES

------

Brittany Powers, Fairview ES

"Ms. Powers is so amazing! She always communicates with parents, goes above and beyond to make sure the kids are learning and always progressing. She is constantly sending pictures of my son’s work in school. We had to travel out of the country with a 2 days notice (over a weekend and holiday) and she got my son a lot of homework so he doesn’t fall behind. She had everything ready for him. Words cannot describe how grateful we are to have her as our son’s teacher."

- a Fairview ES parent

------

Kim Fairchild, Terra Centre ES

"Mrs. Fairchild helped me throughout 4th grade. When I was in 4th grade I got very sick. She was the driving force that kept me going with daily messages of encouragement while I was in the hospital for about a month and later during my recovery and all of my 5th-grade year back in the building. She baked me cookies, got me a lot of balloons, and even started a gradewide flip grid so I could feel good about my situation, motivating me to keep on going. She demonstrated empathy, compassion, and respect. That is how she is with all her students. I will never forget that. Now that I'm about to go to middle school I will never forget how she went above and beyond to make me feel better and taught me that someone will always help you out."

- a Terra Centre ES student

------

Tim Roberson, Woodson IT Center

"Tim has been a HUGE support for our news program at Stone Middle School. He has taken the time to support me with equipment ordering, setup and training for both me and my students. When I have questions, Tim is always willing to come out to Stone or walk me through - often the same day! Even though is role is often behind the scenes, I hope he knows how much of an impact he is making on students. He has given us another platform to communicate and engage our entire school community, not just through our news show, but also community events. Our program wouldn't be what is is without him and I can't thank him enough!"

Alison Costanza, Stone MS

Jan Bonner, Susan Savage, Emma Ascencio, Mary Espinoza, Linda Chang, Min Han, and Monica Iskander, Willow Oaks Admin Center

"This is written in recognition of the Instructional Services Department (ISD) Finance Team for their presentation of a series of finance labs in January and February for ISD support staff tasked with various finance and budget duties throughout the year. In addition, they created a resource library in a shared Google Drive which includes all presentations and tutorials of procedures with instructions for completing tasks. And all of this valuable information was compiled in addition to their face-to-face availability upon request. Bette Midler once said, "People are not the best because they work hard. They work hard because they are the best." The ISD Finance Team is the best!"

Jen Sharp, Willow Oaks Admin Center

------

Kendra Roman, Spring Hill ES

"Ms. Roman is the quintessential elementary school teacher an instructor who makes learning fun with her personal touch. This is critical at elementary-age childhood development. I worked as an instructional assistant in Ms. Roman's pre-kindergarten summer school 2022 class at Great Falls Elementary School, and was inspired by Ms. Roman's dedication to creating a colorful, warm, and personal classroom environment with fun, meaningful lessons. We read, sang, and created art together every day and I will never forget the smiles of the happy students in her care!"

Luke Robertson, Gatehouse Admin Center

"It is difficult to pinpoint one specific experience that stands out with Luke because every time we have asked for support from him, we have received excellent work and above/beyond attention to detail. Luke is always here to support all of us in the Office of Auditor General (OAG), since he interned with us a few years ago. He is always reliable, dedicating his best, humble and respectful to his colleagues. It is amazing to see how Luke grown professionally within OAG, writing easy-to-read reports with the right amount of content, so that everyone can follow his work very easily, even though that he is not sitting next to you to explain. He also has a wonderful public speaking skill, which has shown by itself, a lot of preparation and hard work in the background. The list can go on and on to celebrate Luke’s professional achievements. Keep up all the great work, Luke. From the bottom of my heart, I’m very appreciative of you work and dedication to OAG."

"Ms. Smith is a Co-Team Lead RiSE, our school based mentoring program. The program was started 6 years ago, with monthly mentor/mentee meetings including activities such as Escape Rooms, The Amazing Race and Scavenger Hunts and more. Whatever vision we may have for an activity, Ms. Smith executes it with excellence. She goes above and beyond making sure that every activity and experience is totally memorable. Ms. Smith is also relied upon at Twain for coordinating other events which include celebrating staff and students. She always goes above and beyond her job and she does everything with major amounts of enthusiasm. She deserves this recognition and so much more."

Samantha Vivian-Beck, Twain MS

------

Brittany Powers, Fairview ES

"Ms. Powers is a champion for all her students AND their parents. She has elevated our child with her personalized care and attention to detail. This has been consistent throughout the entire school year, and is extended to all of her students. The time she has spent to ensure communication with her students and their parents has fostered incredible growth in our daughter, particularly when there is a part of the curriculum that has been frustrating or harder to grasp than others. Her text messages are personalized to the students and contain pictures with explanations of what is going on in the classroom for that days lesson or they celebrate an exciting part of our daughters day that we wouldn't otherwise hear about. These have made me feel included and allow me to start up conversations at home about what happened during the day. She goes as far as to write simple notes on worksheets that have games or hidden lessons that allow me to continue the lesson at home particularly when my child could use a boost in confidence or extra practice with that piece of the curriculum. These notes turn our Wednesday folder into conversation hour and have allowed us as parents to participate in our daughters' learning experiences. Her students receive weekly books with personalized notes that contain a lesson and a fun game that is really a hidden lesson. These books and notes have been a highlight of learning inside the home without feeling like it was homework. We could not have asked for a better kindergarten experience. She has created a foundation to make our daughter a lifelong learner. She is making a big difference. Thank you Ms. Powers!"

- a Fairview ES parent

Debbie Perez, Lynbrook ES

------

Robyn Ridpath, Fairhill ES

"I want to express my gratitude to Ms. Ridpath for her love and support to not only my son, but also all of her students. She goes above and beyond on a daily basis to show her students that she cares for them academically and emotionally. Recently, my son struggled on a math test and answered several questions incorrectly. Knowing he struggled, Ms. Ridpath gave him extra support until he understood each concept and could retake the test. My son was not aware that he had done so poorly on the first test. Ms. Ridpath understands that my son is easily discouraged and frustrated, and wanted learning to be a positive experience for him. She knew that if he saw how poorly he did, he would feel defeated and give up. Thank you, Ms. Ridpath, for your empathy, collaboration with families, and the love of learning you share with your students."

- a Fairhill ES parent

------

Joan Swanson, Fairhill ES

"Mrs. Swanson is one of the best teachers at Fairhill Elementary. Not only is she super energetic and supportive of each and every student, she has a way of going above and beyond every single day. She has written personal notes to each student telling them how amazing they are and this goes a long way to boost confidence. She knows what each child needs and goes out of her way to help them. I know my son is ready for middle school because of her. Not only does she take the time to email parents in detail about their child, she truly invests her time and energy towards them. I was truly impressed to hear that she made a video for her students on a day she couldn't come in, telling them what to expect that day. That is true dedication!! Thank you Mrs. Swanson. I could not have asked for a better gift for my son to end his elementary school years than to have you as his teacher."

- a Fairhill ES parent

------

Margarita Pedemonte, Lorton Transportation Center

"Margarita is an amazing bus driver. She always greets the children in the morning with a big smile and says "Good morning!!" to each and every one of them by NAME. There is no other bus driver I have ever met that knows each child by name. On Valentine's day she gave each and every child a special valentine's day gift. The students were so happy as they got off the bus. I am truly so thankful to her and everything she does. She treats every child like her own. Thank you Ms. Margarita Pedemonte for not only making sure our children are safe, but also giving them so much love!"

Kathryn Reimer, Davis Career Center

"Coach K is one of our amazing paraprofessionals here at DCC. On Tuesday we had a celebration for a colleague in honor of his new baby and Coach K, as part of our Sunshine Committee, took the time to make a beautiful 3-tiered diaper cake complete with pink ribbon, baby booties, onesies, and various other baby items. The cake, as well as a gift card from staff, made the celebration very special. Coach K truly went above and beyond to support her colleague and to support our caring culture. Maria Blanco, Cherry Run ES

"The staff and students at Cherry Run are privileged to have Maria Blanco in our building as a special education instructional assistant/ do-it-all wonder woman! Maria brings to the job warmth, an understanding of individual student needs, and a focus on student strengths that then spreads to those around her. She is happy and fun and brings smiles! This year, as needs around the building change (constantly!), she is quick to adapt and to help out whenever she is asked. Or she just shows up, as if she knew help was needed. Maybe that is her secret, she just knows when others may need help, like a sixth sense. She always does even more than what is asked of her. Her day-to-day interactions with students, whether it is a cheerful greeting or personally bringing in items to support our low incidence students just to make them happy and smile, her presence highlights the heart of the teaching profession. Maria does not get lost in the noise that can overwhelm; she shows up and gives 100% for the students and staff. I've heard her say (paraphrased) "I just want to be with the students." And that is, in a nutshell, what FCPS Cares and what Maria stands for."

Kathryn Stevens, Cherry Run ES

She plans engaging family event like Celebrating Cultural Stories Night. Sandra's thoughtfulness and compassion are felt throughout school and we are so very lucky to have her!"

Kristen McClure and Velma Ellis, Centre Ridge ES

"These two teachers should be commended for their efforts. My Grandson has ADHD and needs a lot of one-on-one support. They have continued to work with me to find solutions to keep his body calm. After receiving the Q2nd report I knew we had to do something. I asked for their advice and they sent me an email with more details regarding his daily behavior and suggested I contact his Behavior doctor. They have setup a daily/weekly progress sheet in his folder so that I can be on top of his behavior. They are always willing to listen and communicate with me, they want to see him succeed to his full potential. I couldn't take care of all his school needs without them."

"Ms. Conner is the music teacher at CRES. She sent me an email regarding a summer program that she felt my Grandson (Kindergarten) would really enjoy. He has ADHD and requires support during the day to keep focused. He loves music and the drums. After I registered him, she told me that she would contact the program coordinator to be sure he gets the support he needs. She is wonderful and really believes in promoting his music abilities."

Jose Diaz Gutierrez, Justice HS

"I would like to nominate Jose Gutierrez as the FCPS Employee for Justice High School. Jose worked as a Safety and Security Assistant for over a year up until January 4, 2023. He is now teaching classes for ESOL students however, Jose continues to be an asset to the security team and to Justice High School. On three separate occasions since he has been reassigned as a teacher Jose has demonstrated his attention to detail and vigilance concerning the safety and security of our students. Jose demonstrated exceptional awareness and professionalism during each of these occasions one of which he intervened during a physical altercation by himself. In addition, he maintained his composure and used his personal cell phone to advise me of the incident and I was able to than have additional staff respond. It was due to his immediate actions that prevented the situation from escalating and minimized any injuries to students or staff. On another occasion for a serious incident that occurred in the "L" hallway, Jose took the initiative on his own to help de-escalate two students and he also helped secure the hallway until the incident was resolved. Jose is an exceptional employee and an asset to Justice High School regardless of whatever role he is assigned. He is a consummate professional and a team player. It is for these reasons among many others that Jose should be selected as the FCPS cares employee of the month."

Genie McCreery, Bryant HS

"Genie has come to Bryant High School and made one of the greatest impacts I’ve seen in a teachers first year. She is a career switcher and has walked into the school and transitioned into teaching as if she’s been doing it for 30 years. Her relationship building skills are off the charts. Her creativity and lesson planning keeps students engaged and interested. She advocates for students to be involved in community activities, taking students to Richmond for a government field trip, establishing a connection with the new Hybla Valley community center so our students get the opportunity for job training immediately after graduation and most recently, it might be very simple, but she organized a kindness day on February 14. She had flowers for all of the students to pick up along with kindness grams for students to fill out and give to peers or teachers. If the submission form allowed me to leave a picture I would. It was a wonderful welcome for students on February 14. She brings a positive energy to the school that has single-handedly impacted our whole school culture. Thanks to Genie!"

Samya Salih, Davis Career Center

"Miss S is one of our wonderful paraprofessionals at DCC. Today during a staff meeting she bravely shared a personal story, which was very touching because it showed how much she cares about our community and believes in our students and her colleagues. While she is often very quiet, she is a very positive presence in our classrooms and worksites and she speaks from the heart about her students and our school. Thank you, Miss S, for being a part of our DCC family!"

I sent an SOS email to the HS SBTS and Jen replied right away that she could meet me on Zoom and brainstorm. First she helped me not panic, then she helped me brainstorm some alternatives. Thank you Jen for your calm and creative thought partnering! You are appreciated!"

Theresa Piccolo, Davis Career Center

"Holy Moly Macaroni!! HOW LUCKY are we to have an amazing ETR named Theresa. If one ever walked into our building, one would never guess that it would be her first year as the ETR at Davis. Theresa has a go-getter attitude that has been refreshing to the Davis Career Center. Her willingness to assist by spending the whole day attending day support vendors with non-speaking English families to advocate for those transitioning students and their parents, is just the tip of the iceberg. Theresa continues to work with families, for an example staying on the phone with them for two plus hours, to ensure that the paperwork is completed for post-secondary placement, just shows how dedicated she is. Knowing that her plate is full but continues to meet with students and discussing their options, just confirms why Davis Career Center is so lucky to have her. Thank you, Theresa, for all you do at DCC!"

Margaret Barnes, Holmes MS

"Mrs. Barnes is the ideal administrator. She has high expectations for her students and finds ways to scaffold the support so they can meet and exceed them. She reaches out to parents immediately when there is a concern as well as a celebration for their child. When my daughter was the victim of a threat, she made sure to touch base with her in the cafeteria a few days later to ensure she still felt safe emotionally and physically. She is always present at student events and parent events alike, and always is not an exaggeration. She knows both parents and students by name, and spends time investing in getting to know the students as unique individuals. She is welcoming of challenging conversations, knowing that there are multiple ways to achieve success. Her student-centered approach has created a warm and welcoming environment at Holmes. Any time I have ever emailed her, I have heard back with in a few hours, even if it's to say, "I'm looking into it and will follow up" and despite having nearly 900 students, she has ALWAYS followed up. She approaches student discipline from a place of safety and learning experiences. I am so thankful that she is my child's principal. She puts the PAL back into the word."

Paul Arena and Dani Smith, Robinson SS

"Mr. Paul Arena and Ms. Dani Smith are top tier special educators at Robinson High School. They are true leaders, constantly going above and beyond in the best interest of students. Mr. Arena and Ms. Smith are extremely detail oriented and work hard to ensure the academic, behavioral, social, emotional, and medical needs of all of their students are being met. On any given day, their busy schedule can include differentiating and individualizing instructional lesson plans, making sure a student’s medication is available, walking around the building with a student as a part of a behavioral reward system, supporting students on and off the bus, helping students access the cafeteria and eat their lunch, creating opportunities with general education peers, and then some. It should be noted, it is not just the students they take care of. They truly work as a team with the support staff, making sure their needs are also met. They work to diligently schedule support staff to match their strengths with student needs, taking into consideration things such as ensuring student to staff ratio are appropriate and staff have a lunch break. When colleagues are out of the building, they quickly adjust the schedule and plan so instruction for their students is not interrupted. Mr. Arena and Ms. Smith often work outside of the school day to create unique opportunities for their students, including movie nights, dinners, community-based instruction, work experiences, unified sports events, and other activities in the community on a regularly scheduled basis. These two special educators truly go above and beyond in supporting a very unique population. It is clear they do so out of the goodness of their heart and a desire to help their students access and participate in the best educational environment possible. We are so grateful to have them at Robinson!"

As the R2 data specialist, Luke is bombarded with requests for information and help, sometimes without clear parameters of what is needed. For our team, Luke has been a source of accurate information and a mind reader! "Mr. Alleyne does a lot behind the scenes to care for the Stone students (and even staff when there is a need). He takes care of our students by feeding them and making sure they are equipped with the tools they need to be successful throughout their school day. If he sees one of his students in the office, he checks in with that student and their counselor or Administrator to make sure the student is staying on track. He also believes in holding students accountable. He stays on them about going to class and completing their work. He does these things and so much more without the need for any acknowledgment or praise. There had been challenges in finding a way to assess my daughter's performance due to her social anxiety disorder, but Ms. Dymond has truly gone above and beyond to ensure my daughter's academic success. Instead of relying on traditional methods of evaluation, Ms. Dymond had the creative idea to use Flipgrid to allow my daughter to record her readings in a comfortable and private setting at school. Maggie Heninger, Little Run ES

"As our sole ESOL teacher, I am always so impressed with how much Maggie gives to ensure our English Language Learners get what they need. Besides the countless ESL groups she supports, she also spends a great deal of time planning for and meeting with our new comers. When a new student begins, she makes sure she is one of the first faces they see and rearranges her schedule to help them settle in. She ensures these students are supported every step of the way from understanding how school in the US works to helping them navigate new social situations and friendships. She spends time both inside and outside of school creating student specific resources that will help each unique new student acclimate to their new surroundings. Maggie regularly reaches out to the families of these new students to ensure a home school connection. She has a warmth that makes these families feel welcome and part of their child's education. I don't know how Maggie gets it all done, but it's always clear that she has thoughtfully planned the supports that all of our language learners need to be successful.  She is exceptional!"

Amy Rapuano, Wakefield Forest ES

"Our school is in the midst of a renovation where space, materials and continuity are a challenge. When trying to provide amazing experiences for students, we face this challenge daily. Amy Rapuano is our fabulous Librarian. She conducts classes, runs our Morning News program and is the hub of all activity in the school. When I asked for some help to set up a Stop Motion Video class, Amy answered the call. I was in need of extra cameras and a room with plenty of space. Amy has a very busy schedule as a Librarian but was able to poll teachers for cameras, check with our building schedule and juggle teacher's rooms and schedules for me. She did all this with only two days' notice and after a leave of absence. Amy cares so much about the student experience. She cares that teachers have the tools they need to be successful. We couldn't do what we do without the thoughtful, extra efforts made by our Librarian, Amy Rapuano. Thank you!!!"

While we are attached to the Marshall HS building, our students go out into the community each day to access worksites and cannot utilize the cafeteria. Harjit and her team prepare to-go meals each morning in addition to their regular responsibilities for breakfast and lunch for the rest of Marshall High School. They have had amazing patience with us this year as we've navigated changes to staff, returning policies for meal charges, and attendance needs. We are so grateful for their willingness to work with us to make sure our students are fed and able to get through their busy workdays."

Lauren Forshay, Davis Career Center

"Lauren is a daily reminder of how important it is to see our students for their strengths and ABILITIES instead of their disabilities. She truly seeks out and chooses to focus on the potential in all of her students, and her confidence in them results in direct student outcomes. This week Lauren granted one of her students carte blanche in decorating an entire (ordered and paid for!) tray of signature DCC Culinary sugar cookies for Valentine's Day. This student rose to the occasion and created some of the most beautiful cookies I have seen all year, all because Lauren gave her the opportunity to shine. This trust Lauren places in her students gives them the confidence they need to tap into their creativity, recognize their own strengths, and grow as self-determined individuals."

Frau Cruz immediately saw his need for extra love and attention and has invited him to stay with her during lunch to just talk and hang out. This selfless act has meant a GREAT deal to our son. He constantly tells us how she makes him feel "safe." She is beyond a teacher, she is an ever-lasting and meaningful person for him. Benjamin Bernier, Hayfield SS

"Mr. Bernier is the model of the caring and collaborative culture promoted by FCPS. He has gone above and beyond to help encourage our apathetic high schooler to succeed, nay excel, in his courses. With frequent and detailed emails and communication, well outside of school hours, and regular check-ins with our (and all) students, his investment is genuine and admirable. Specifically, he has taken lots of time to communicate with us and offer accommodations for our sophomore that struggles with autism and executive functioning. The thought, detail, and care that has gone into his communications and efforts are unmatched even by many elementary teachers we've had (with far fewer students in their classes). One of his most recent emails was so sincere it brought me to tears of gratitude. In addition, he has created a warm, safe, and comfortable environment that is the envy of students that are not even in his classes. He is organized, consistent, approachable, and kind. Kudos, gratitude, and love for Mr. Bernier!!!"

Azza Hassan, Cherry Run ES

"If I had to pick someone as the face of Cherry Run, the first smile I think of is Azza Hassan, instructional assistant extraordinaire! Ms. Azza, as students know her, is a wonderful lady to work with. Every day, she is there to lend a helping hand, provide meaningful engagement to students, and to support instructional practices. Our school and student needs have many of our special education staff scheduled to provide support all over the building, and Ms. Azza rolls into any room happy and smiling, brightening the room. Today I saw her with our students in the ID room providing support during staff breaks, and her way with students is a joy to watch. Then, she is off to work with kindergarten, then second grade, and beyond! Also of equal importance in our current climate of teacher stress, Ms. Azza brings a joy and lightness to her fellow staff members. In my many years knowing her, I can’t think of a time when she was complaining or stuck. She is always the professional, always ready to be there, and always wonderful with our students. Today I celebrate Ms. Azza and all she does for our students, big or small, seen or unseen, and for the joy she brings to staff, I know she lightens my day and I am grateful and lucky to work with her."

Robin Noonan Price and Donny Haller, Sprague Technology Center

"Robin and Donny, your team’s support and expertise in capturing great videos of our teachers and students in action was amazing, smooth, and easy. Your flexibility, professionalism, and guidance made the videos even better as you captured so many of the positive, intentional, and enriching adult-child interactions happening in our Early Childhood Special Education classrooms (preschool 2-5 yrs old). The videos you helped us capture will help our teachers to continue to grow and improve in their practices.  Who knows, maybe in the future they will help others be aware of what we do on a larger scale. Like the STEAM videos in our Early Childhood Class-based program! We cannot thank you enough for producing the professional quality videos and setting up our Youtube channel to support our teachers' continued growth and instructional development. Your services are an amazing opportunity to help highlight and support any program in FCPS and I keep telling people to reach out to you. He has been generous with his time knowing that public education employees often don't have time to fully understand different aspects of their benefits package and he reaches out in efforts to really help us. What a blessing he is to our community to offer this kind of service out of the goodness of his heart and with nothing in return."

Monika Elder, Great Falls ES

"Ms. Elder is an essential educator, and we are lucky to have her at Glen Forest! I had the opportunity to co-teach with Ms. Elder, and her learners where ready before I entered. The environment of her classroom ensured me that our learners are in great hands. They were sitting on the carpet, and ready to be communicators by listening. They made sure to pay attention to the lesson, and followed directions quickly. Ms. Elder's students demonstrated their digital citizenship and portrait of a graduate skills, by staying goal-oriented and not visiting other sites. I give these examples because it demonstrates the positive relationship instilled by Ms. Elder. She truly loves her job and cares about learners! Classroom management is talent which allows our learners to truly have the best school experiences ever. Ms. Elder you are very talented!"

"Olga is a superstar in every way. She is always the first to celebrate teammates, honor milestones, and shows care to each and every person on staff. Just this week I witnessed her make tea for a colleague recovering from a cold, completely unprompted, just because she cares about each of us and how we care for ourselves. She checks in with me about personal and professional matters, sending loving and encouraging texts that matter more than she knows. She organizes our grade level team to show appreciation to our fabulous office staff, to send meals to colleagues out on medical leave, and so much more. She is the epitome of a caring culture and a rare treat to have as a colleague and friend."

Carlos Gonzalez, Lake Braddock SS

"Less than three weeks before the Lake Braddock Musical Theatre production of "Into The Woods," we were in need of a last minute substitute pit orchestra director for an important after school rehearsal. Mr. Gonzalez stepped into the role with hardly any advance notice, leading the musicians and actors through the very challenging Stephen Sondheim music. He tapped into his past experience as a band leader, and his willingness to do so meant the production did not have to cancel a rehearsal and that it was able to continue to move forward. On behalf of the theatre students and families, we want to say we are so grateful for his flexibility and willingness to truly go above and beyond his typical day-to-day role as assistant principal."

He went the extra mile for us and helped us to understand how we could stream these events using the equipment we had. As someone who has struggled with set up and execution I have not hesitated in calling Arman for guidance, and subsequently Arman has been back to the school to assist us in broadcasting. Most recently he came yesterday to help with the streaming of an event, and didn’t hesitate to offer me guidance on our newsroom equipment that seemed to be malfunctioning. He called me today to follow up and guided me through troubleshooting the audio issue we were encountering via FaceTime. Arman deserves this recognition as a very valued member of DIT."
