Class of 2020 Senior Spotlight - Gabriela Mejia, Herndon High School
1) What has been your biggest disappointment/hardship since schools have been closed for the remainder of the academic year?
The biggest disappointment has been the sudden change the school had to adapt to surrounding the COVID-19 circumstances. I was never able to say a sincere goodbye to my school, classmates, or teachers. It’s crazy to think my last day was as a student in the Herndon building! A hardship was definitely thinking about not having the traditional graduation ceremony for seniors, but I’ve learned that a ceremony does not validate the class of 2020 graduating! I’m proud my classmates and I have finished strong.
2) What are your plans for the fall?
I am planning to attend James Madison University to study business management with a concentration in human resources!
3) How have your plans changed, if at all?
My plans have changed drastically, as I was planning on attending NOVA during the school year, but quarantine made me decide to attend JMU! This is because I have been working full time at a grocery store, and I also had the extra time to do research, commit to a school, and make my clear plan. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the university will be open for the fall semester!!
4) What have you learned about yourself since the COVID-19 closures?
I have definitely learned the importance of time management while at home. Getting assignments done has been a practice of self-discipline! I have also gained valuable experience as an essential worker, as working at the grocery store and Instacart has encouraged me to be productive for the community during this vulnerable time.
5) What is your passion?
My passion includes helping to protect and restore the environment. I love being green! I have been able to work on my garden outside my house during quarantine. I love following a vegan lifestyle.
6) Have you discovered a new passion in light of social distancing?
The highlights of my days have been going on walks and runs, and also cooking and baking!! Like I mentioned before, I have also found my passion in gardening!
7) What are your hopes for the future?
I hope the world can heal from COVID-19 in the best way possible.
8) Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you?
I will miss Herndon so much!! Proud to be class of 2020.
9) What are you most proud of about your school experience/best memory?
I am proud to be a member and leader of many clubs and organizations including the College Partnership Program, Plant Powered, Best Buddies, and more! These out-of-the-classroom experiences have shaped my high school career. I am grateful for the opportunities available to students at Herndon High school.
