Free Summer Learning Opportunities

FCPS is offering free summer learning opportunities for K-12 students.

FCPS is offering free optional virtual opportunities this summer to support student learning throughout the summer months. (Due to building closures face-to-face summer learning opportunities are cancelled.)

Mathematics and Literacy Continuity of Learning (Grades K-8)

Dates: June 29-July 31, 2020

Elementary and middle school students will have the opportunity to review concepts and skills using recommended self-directed print and digital materials. Materials will not be collected or graded.

Practice Books and Office Hours

Practice Books

Print materials have been mailed to families. This includes students who opted out of the distance learning packets because we learned that several parents had difficulty opting back in for the summer practice books. Students new to FCPS who registered by June 12, 2020 will also receive packets. Families will receive two envelopes near the end of June:

  • one Language Arts Essentials Practice Book
  • one Mathematics Essentials Practice Book

Digital versions of practice books will be available on FCPS 24/7 Learning.

Teachers and Office Hours

Teachers from each school will have weekly office hours from June 29-July 31, 2020 to provide feedback and support to students using the practice books. Please contact your school for information about accessing teachers during office hours.

i-Ready (Grades K - 6)

Elementary students can use i-Ready for more skills practice until Friday, July 31, 2020. Information about how to login to i-Ready is available on the Universal Screener web page.

Fine Arts Summer Learning Program (K-12)

Dates: July 6-August 6, 2020

Fairfax County Public Schools is offering an online arts enrichment program for current K-12 FCPS students. A variety of classes will be offered in art, music, theater, and dance.

The best way to learn more about the classes is to access the program’s Google site. You must log in to the site with a student's FCPS email address, which is a student's ID number followed by @fcpsschools.net.

Here are the offerings by grade level: 

  • Grades K -  6 - Art, Stitchery and Weaving, Claymation and Recycled Art, Music, Drumming, Contemporary Vocals, Sixth Grade Band, Sixth Grade Strings, Theater, and Dance
  • Grades 7 - 12 - Cartooning, Cell Phone Photography and Animation, Digital Art, Exploratory Drawing and Painting, Guitar, Jazz Band, Creative Strings, Show Choir, Musical Theater, Acting, Theatre Games and Improv, Technical Theater Design and Production, Creative Writing, Yoga for the Artist, Summer Dance Exploration, Summer Dance Intensive, and Fitness for the Performing Artist

Teachers and Supplies

Every class is taught by a licensed FCPS teacher in a fun and supportive environment. Each week a new activity with a short demonstration video and directions will be posted online. Families are encouraged to come back each week to see what is new.

The classes in grades 7-12 ( and select elementary classes) will have the option to work directly with the teacher.  Most classes will require a few supplies or an instrument; this information will be included in the class description.

Middle School Value in Prevention (VIP) (7-9)

Dates:  Mondays–Thursdays from June 29-July 30, 2020

The Middle School Value in Prevention (VIP) program is a five-week online program is for rising 7th through 9th graders to help keep them connected this summer.  

Students will engage in activities in the arts, music, STEM, physical fitness, cooking, games, puzzles, literature, and more – things students can do at home. 

Register online at the Fairfax County website, using the form appropriate for your child's middle school. 

Teachers

The program is led by FCPS After-School Specialists and Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS).

Program offerings will include a combination of synchronous and asynchronous activities. Synchronous activities will occur throughout the day between 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

  • Synchronous – staff and students are online working together at the same time
  • Asynchronous – activities that students can work on at any time

Tech Adventure Camp at Home (2-7)

Career and Technical Education (CTE) is providing free resources for students to do fun and engaging activities at home similar to those that are done during summer camp. These activities will be from CTE program areas: Business and Marketing, Culinary Arts, Trade and Industrial, STEAM, and Health and Medical.
