Summer Learning: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL Language and Literacy Connections

This free online class provides FCPS middle and high school ESOL students the opportunity to engage in thematic lessons in an online environment with an ESOL teacher. In this class, students continue developing their academic and reading and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher. This class is pass/fail only and fulfills the online requirement toward graduation.

FCPS middle and high school students looking to develop their academic and reading and writing skills.

Daily synchronous lessons:

  • 10:30-11:30 a.m. or
  • 7 - 8 p.m.

Registration will be open from April 29, 2019 to May 31, 2019.

English 9, 10, and 11 for ELs

English 9 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have been unsuccessful in English 9. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 9 SOL.

English 10 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have been unsuccessful in English 10. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 10 SOL.

English 11 for ELs is designed for FCPS ELP level 1, 2, and 3 students who have been unsuccessful in English 11. This course is aligned to the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and the English 11 SOL.

Registration

Registration will be open from April 29, 2019 to June 24, 2019.

Tuition

  • FCPS Students: No Tuition
  • Out-of-County Students: Not Eligible

Grading

  • Only students in credit recovery courses receive grades.
  • Grades will be calculated according to guidelines outlined in FCPS High School Grading and Reporting to Parents.
  • Grade point average (GPA) is calculated on the basis of all courses for which credit has been earned or attempted, including repeated courses previously passed.
  • Withdrawing from a course:
    • Students who withdraw from July 8-July 11 may do so without a grade penalty.
    • Students who withdraw from July 12-July 23 will receive a mark of withdrawn failing (WF) or withdrawn passing (WP).
    • Students who withdraw after July 23 will receive a mark of withdrawn pass (WP) or fail (F).

SOL and WorkKeys Testing Requirement

English 11 students will take the Standards of Learning End of Course Test:

  • If required for federal accountability.
  • For use as a verified credit (high school credit courses only).

English 11 for ELs students will need to show a photo ID (e.g., driver’s license, school ID, passport) to enter the testing location. If a student cannot show proof of identity, he or she will not be able to take the test.

The Credit Recovery Academy provides an opportunity for students to recover one high school course credit. Students may not take these courses for new course credit. Students are eligible to enroll in a Credit Recovery Academy course if they have previously received a grade of F. No additional course credit will be awarded.

The Online Campus may cancel a course if the course is under enrolled. For cancelled courses or classes, students will be contacted and get a full refund.
