About Transitional High Schools
The Transitional ESOL High Schools (TEHS) provide instruction for older ESOL students (18 and up) who wish to earn their high school diploma. Students are in Grades 9-11, depending on their prior educational background. The TEHS provide instruction at eight sites, sharing space at Annandale High School, Bryant Alternative High School, Falls Church High School, Graham Road Center, Herndon High School Lee High School, Pimmit Hills Center, and Stuart High School. Site hours vary slightly. Classes at Lee High are held from 2:15 to 9:45 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays. Friday classes are 4:15 to 6 p.m. Classes at Graham Road and Pimmit Hills Center are held from 8:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and from 8:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Fridays. All other sites have classes from 3:45 to 9:45 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and from 3:45 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. on Fridays.
The instructional program consists of ESOL English 9, English Language Development, Mathematics, Strategies for Success, and US-VA Government or Science Concepts. Students earn high school content credits for graduation in English 9, English language development (World Language credit), Algebra 1, and Government, and elective credits for FAST-individual math, science concepts and Strategies for Success. The Transitional High Schools do not offer a diploma; however, when students attain the intermediate level of WIDA 3, they may continue their studies at the adult or adult alternative high school, earning their high school diploma from that location.
