Taking Charge of My Future - Tools for Self-Advocacy

FCPS students with disabilities ages 14-22, will learn about self-determination and why these skills are important now as well as after graduation. Students will be able to rotate through three activity sessions all geared toward achieving a better sense of what it means to be self-determined, how to practice skills such as self-advocacy, and how to increase self-awareness in relation to career exploration and decision making. Throughout the morning, participants will have the opportunity to network and share issues of importance to youth and young adults with disabilities.

Students are asked to bring their school issued laptop fully charged. If they do not have a laptop, one will be supplied for them.      

The FCPS Adaptive Physical Education program will offer optional recreational activities for participants from 11:30 to 1:00, when the larger Special Education Conference concludes.

Lunch

Participants will be expected to bring their own lunch.

If your FCPS student is interested in participating, register your FCPS student here. A Career and Transition staff member will call you to gather more in-depth information about your student’s particular needs and will provide you with detailed information about this event. This phone conversation must take place in order for the student to be officially enrolled in this event.

Learning Outcomes

  • Participants will learn how self-determination can be applied to their daily lives.  
  • Participants will learn cooperation and collaboration by working within a team of peers.
  • Participants will learn problem solving strategies and will communicate their ideas to attain a collective goal.
  • Participants will gain an understanding of themselves by identifying their strengths and interests as well as acknowledging areas in which they need support.
  • Participants will understand how self-knowledge is crucial to the development of the IEP.
