The Senior year is an important one. Post-secondary options are interested in the types of courses a student takes and how well he/she performs throughout the year.

12th Grade Career Activities
Counselors meet with students in small groups in September to discuss the college application process. Students are given copies of their High School Transcripts for review. The online Junior/Senior Handbook provides vital information for students and parents: how and when to get transcripts sent, requesting references, etc. Students are encouraged to speak with their counselors individually. In addition, seminars may be presented by college representatives to discuss the college application process and financial aid for parents and students.

12th Grade Goals

Students may want to:
Develop resumes/personal references.
Review high school records, test / interest inventory data, career plans.
Take necessary tests: SAT I / ACT, SAT II, TOEFL, ASVAB.
Identify career/college choices.
Complete forms for computerized needs analysis software, financial aid, and scholarships. Be sure to look into the merit scholarships offered by each school to which you are applying.
Apply for college, further training, or employment. (Refer to the Junior - Senior Handbook for vital college application information.)
Students may also wish to:
Keep enjoying your favorite extracurricular activities. Colleges want to see some consistency and willingness to keep working with and enjoying your activities.
Use your portfolio of and extracurricular activities when you do your college applications. Bragging about things you have done is appropriate. (Bragging is good, padding your information can create problems.)
Complete the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse form if you haven't done so over the summer and you hope to play Division I or II sports. Be sure to follow all the rules required to maintain eligibility.
Visit the fall College Fairs at the Fair Oaks and at Hayfield High School. This is a good way to get more information about colleges.
Visit your selected colleges if you have not already done so. Although not all colleges offer interviews, consider interviewing with an admissions officer if you are serious about a school. (Be sure you have researched the school first. Your questions should show interest in the school.) The visit is important to getting the "feel" of the school and knowing what it is really like. Narrow your list to a reasonable number of "dreams, realistic, and shoe-ins."
Maintain grades after college acceptance. Colleges may rescind acceptance if you don't maintain the same quality of work in the same level of classes you were taking when admitted.

THINK AHEAD: It is very important to speak with your counselor for the best advise. All of the following sites have suggestions that will help start planning. However, these suggestions may not take into consideration the unique situations in Fairfax County Public Schools or the requirements of your dream school.
