11. SPORTS REPORT
GIRL’S LACROSSE: The Lady Cavaliers' 2013 season drew to a close at home as Langley topped Woodson 16 - 8 in the second round of the Northern Region tournament at Pat Cunningham Stadium. Despite the loss, the 2013 Woodson girls' squad continued its winning g-lax tradition, adding a fourth straight Patriot District title to the Cavs' long list of titles. Congrats to all the girls, coaches, managers, and staff for a wonderful run!
BOY’S SOCCER: In the semifinals of the District tournament on Wednesday, May 15, the boys Soccer team defeated West Potomac 3-2 to improve to 13-2 overall, and earn a place in the District championship game. The Cavaliers were led by forward Billy Metzler who scored two goals in the first half after Woodson gave up an early goal to the visiting Wolverines. In the second half, midfielder Scott Patterson inspired an undermanned Cavalier side who was forced to play down a man by scoring a late goal to earn the 3-2 victory.
Last Friday night, May 17, the Cavaliers lost the District Championship game 3-1 in a hard fought match against rival Lake Braddock. The Cavaliers were led by Michael Cherry who scored an early second half goal after Woodson gave up two early goals in the first half. Goalkeeper Nick Zohary notched nine saves, keeping the Cavaliers within reach and providing the squad opportunities to climb back into the match. Woodson, 13-3 overall, hosted the Herndon Hornets on Tuesday night in the first round of the Regional playoffs. Results will be published next week.
GIRL’S SOCCER: The Lady Cavaliers capped off their domination of the Patriot District this season with a 3-0 victory over South County. The Lady Cavaliers were 9-0-1 against Patriot District opponents this season, outscoring them 43-4. Woodson started on the attack quickly getting their 1st shot after 29 seconds. Francesca Martin drove a shot on goal that was blocked by the South County keeper but the rebound went to Teresa Fruchterman who put iT into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead after only 2 1/2 minutes having been played. Woodson continued the pressure with 4 more shots before South County finally sailed a shot wide at the Cavaliers end of the field. After one of Regan Dalberg's patented long throw-ins, Kaitlyn McCurdy drove a header home, after Maura Aman had headed the throw-in to the back post, putting the Lady Cavaliers up 2-0. South County responded putting pressure on the Woodson defense, but the back line of Maddy Nguyen, Regan Dalberg, Lauren Higgs, and Sara Brennan along with goalie Jessie Printz were up to the task. Jessie came out on a potential breakaway forcing the South County player into the corner where her cross was driven up the field by Maddy Nguyen. Woodson then responded with a flurry of shots before the half that tilted the field back in favor of the Cavs. They finished the half with a 14-7 edge in shots as well as 2 corner kicks to none for the Stallions. South County's Andy Sullivan got a free kick just outside the box early in the 2nd half but was thwarted by the wall the Cavaliers put up to block her shot, her shot off the rebound went high and Woodson went back on the attack. After a long pass down the left sideline from Kaitlyn McCurdy, Teresa Fruchterman was able to get in front of the Stallion defender and was pulled down in the box setting up a penalty kick. Stephanie Wilson calmly drilled the shot into the lower right corner past the keeper for a daunting 3-0 lead with 36 minutes remaining. Christina Halstead and Francesca Falvo contributed along both wings with a number of long runs and balls into the box. Ellery Thomas contributed on the wing and on the back line. Jillian Barnard and Natalie Stynchula provided a break for the forwards creating a number of scoring chances while in the game. The Lady Cavs closed out the game with rock solid defense as they only allowed 1 shot in the final 25 minutes of the game. It was the 5th consecutive shutout for the team. The Lady Cavaliers head to Regionals as the #1 seed for a game next Tuesday at home against rival Robinson having now outscored their opponents 44-3 in their last 8 games.

This successfully completed physical will be good for all sports and out of season practices (green days, yellow days, weight room workouts) for the 2013-2014 school year. This event is a fundraiser for the Woodson High School Sports Medicine Department and goes to support the athletes at Woodson High School. The cost of the physicals is $50 when you register online.
You can register by following this link: http://www.fcps.edu/supt/activities/atp/ppe/index.shtml
