9.    SPORTS UPDATE

GIRL’S SOCCER: Congratulations to coach Warren Williams on being selected "Coach of the Year" for the Patriot District, while leading the Lady Cavs to post season District and Regional playoff games.

BOY’S TENNIS:  The boys tennis season came to an end last week. They beat JEB Stuart in the first round of regional’s 5-0. Then moved on to a match up with the Concord District champion. In a very close match Woodson came up just short 4-5. The boys were down 2-4 after singles.  David Beyer (default) at #4 and Alex Gebler at #6 got the points for WTW. This meant Woodson had to win all 3 doubles to move on. #3 doubles Alex Gebler and Josh Whitehead played their best match of the season and quickly gave Woodson another point. Jeremy Weng and Christian Hughes at #1 doubles had won the first set and were up 4-1 when Christian started cramping. After the 10 min injury delay he was able to continue and bring home another point for Woodson. The match was now tied at 4 all. Jack Moynahan and David Beyer at #2 doubles had won the first set 7-5 and were battling for the 2nd set. They were unable to convert and lost the 2nd set 6-7. It came down to the 3rd set which went to Robinson. A great effort by all. The boys finished the 2012 season 13-3.

TRACK & FIELD:  Last Thursday and Friday, the Woodson Track and Field team hosted the Patriot District Championships at home.  The Cavaliers went up against the best in the District and had some great successes.  Congratulations to the athletes listed below who will move on to the Northern Region Championships, at Robinson High School, later this week.

Stotesbury Cup Results

After a strong season of racing, Woodson looked forward to a strong showing in Philadelphia. Woodson was well represented at The Stotesbury Cup this year. We are very proud of our Women's Freshman 8 who made semi's and our Men's Light 8 that was just shy of medaling in the grand final.

The Women's First 8 placed 20th and missed advancing by 2 spots.
The Women's Light 4 finished 16th and missed advancing by 4 spots. Their event only allowed 12 boats to advance.
The Women's Junior 4 placed 34th out of 58 boats.
The Women's Freshman 8 placed 17th which qualified them for semi finals on Friday afternoon. In the semi finals, the girls raced in lane 6, which is the toughest lane to race in Philly. The girls came off the start in first and stayed in first for the first third of the race. In the end, the other boats passed our boat, but our ladies rowed with a lot of heart and look forward to going back next year. The ladies are currently preparing for their trip this week where they will have the opportunity to race TC Williams again at Nationals.

The Men's First 4 finished 33rd out of 47.
The Men's Junior 4 finished 30th out of 61 boats.
The Men's Freshman 8 finished 26th out of 43 boats.
The Men's Light 8 was certainly the highlight of the weekend and started the weekend right with a 5th place finish in time trials. In the semi finals, the men rowed to a 3rd place finish behind St. Joseph's Prep, which qualified them for the grand final. In the grand final in dramatic fashion, the men came down the course in 5th place. In the sprint, the Light 8 walked through TC Williams and nearly bested Moorestown who finished 3rd in lane 6. From where the Woodson team and families watched the race, we could not tell whether the men finished in 3rd or 4th. After a few minutes, which seemed to last forever, the announcer stated that our men had come in 4th. This is no small feat. It has been 4 years since a Woodson boat made the grand final. Not only did the Light 8 make the final, but they nearly medaled. The men look forward to this last week of rowing in preparation for Nationals.
