Interested in learning about radio and communications?  WAMU, 88.5 American University Radio has a Summer of Service Volunteer Program that will give rising high school Seniors the opportunity to spend the summer working behind the scenes with the staff of WAMU in the fast-paced and exciting world of public radio.  The program will take place from 24 Jun - 7 Aug. Fairfax County Rec-PAC Counselor in Training
The Rec-PAC program will operate at 40 elementary school locations around Fairfax County on weekdays from 1 Jul - 8 Aug.  Counselors-in-Training (CIT) work as part of a staff team to facilitate activities for children.  During the summer, students will be assigned to a site and work daily from 8:15 am - 3:45 pm or 11 am - 6 pm depending on the site.  CITs must be at least 14 years old.  Many CITs return year after year, eventually accepting paid Rec-PAC positions when they turn 18 years of age.  This opportunity is for teens looking to gain valuable work experience, learn leadership skills, and earn government service hours.  Participants must attend a 3 hour orientation course on Sat, 22 Jun, 9am-12pm, at Chantilly High School.  There is a $135 fee that covers training, manual and a t-shirt.  For more information and application/registration packet visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/rec-pac/cit-volunteer.htm.

THE JOEY PIZZANO MEMORIAL FUND (JPMF) SEEKS VOLUNTEER SWIM BUDDIES – The Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund (JPMF) seeks volunteer swim buddies Saturdays, from 1:00-2:00 pm.  JPMF’s “Splash” program seeks volunteers to assist individuals with disabilities learn how to be safe and have fun in and around the water.  Volunteers must be 13 or older.  A 30-minute training will be provided on the first day of volunteering.  If you volunteer for all 4 offered sessions, JPMF will cover the cost of a lifeguard certification class.  Sessions will be held at Providence, Lee District and Oak Marr Rec Centers.

  Fairfax Families 4 Kids needs volunteers to help with a 5-K Walk to benefit children in foster care. The event will be held Saturday, 18 May from 8:30 am - 1 pm with registration beginning at 8 am. the run will be held at Lake Accotink Park (rear entrance), 5660 Heming Ave, Springfield, VA.   Inova has volunteer opportunities for teens.  The minimum age requirement is 16 years old.  The school year session is 29 September through 23 June.  Volunteers must commit to at least one 3-4 hour shift per week.  Volunteer positions are available in their Patient Support Services, Elder Life Program and Gift Shops.  Volunteers who need to complete just 20 hours of community service may inquire to help out at the consignment shops.  All prospective teens must email the Volunteer Services Office to register for the volunteer lottery.  The school year lottery will be on on 6 September.  Volunteers also have to have a TB test and background check. Although volunteers don't have to pay for this, it takes time, so think ahead. Lose the Training Wheels (LTTW)
  Fairfax County Public Schools - Lose the Training Wheels (LTTW) is an after school progam designed to teach individuals with disabilities to ride two-wheel bicycles and become lifelong riders.  It is a weeklong program at selected FCPS middle schools. Attend one 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days.  This program provides young people an opportunity to learn more about youth with disabilities.   The National Mall Building in D.C. and the Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly are looking for Visitor Services Volunteers who will staff the welcome desk, greet visitors, answer questions, and interact with the public.  Prospective volunteers must be at least 16 years old and available for a multi-month requirement.  At least 8 hours/month are required but the schedule can be flexible.  Volunteers must feel comfortable interacting with a variety of people.  Multiple languages are a plus.  If you’re selected after an initial interview, you’re required to attend a two-day (always on Saturdays) training session. Students ages 14 - 17 can enjoy living and volunteering at a State Park for 3 weeks and earn a $500 stipend at the end of the program.  Enjoy weekend and evening activities like adventure training (caving, horseback riding, canoeing, etc.), museums, nature hikes, and interpretive programs like astronomy and geocaching.  Work crews consist of approximately 10 high school students from diverse backgrounds and three college-age or older crew supervisors.  Applications must include two references.  Apply online at www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/ycc.shtml.
