  Information on AmeriCorps as part of Corporation of National Service
AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC)
  Part of the AmeriCorps network of service programs operated by the Corporation for National and Community Service that provides opportunities for full and part time service in exchange for education awards. It is a 10-month, team-based, full-time residential program. Members live in dormitory-style housing at one of 5 campuses located in South Carolina, Maryland, Colorado, California and Washington, D.C. Upon completion of the program, members receive an education award of $4,725 that can be used for college, training or student loans. During their term of service members receive room & board, uniforms, training, health benefits and modest living allowance. City Year is looking for 17-24 year-olds to give 10 months to full-time national service in 18 cities across the country. Benefits include a weekly stipend, a $4,725 educational scholarship award, healthcare, Metro passes, a free cell phone provided by T-Mobile, and professional and leadership development.   The National Autism Association, Northern Virginia Chapter – is offering high school students an opportunity to develop leadership skills. This organization wants to form a team of responsible, creative teens to further the interests of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Autism Association. The team needs someone for each of the following skills: Excellent penmanship, Facebook developer, Fundraising head, and an Outgoing person who will provide support at Chamber of Commerce events and other public appearances. Interested individuals need to be mature as they may meet high profile people The group coordinator anticipates that this effort will involve about 10 hours per week for each student on Saturday mornings and at community events from 6 9 pm. Adaptive Aquatics Program
Providence RECenter offers Training to students interested in becoming Teacher’s Aides to work with people of all ages who have learning, physical, mental, emotional, and/or sensory disabilities in the Adapted Aquatics Program. Once trained, the Teacher’s Aide is able to work with students, one on one, in a class setting under the guidance of an Adapted Aquatics Instructor. Benefits include volunteer hours, personal satisfaction of helping others, free usage of the RECenter facilities and the opportunity to take free classes. Training (hands-on pool work, video, discussion and fun) is scheduled for Providence RECenter on Jan 10, 2009 from 1-6pm. Dress comfortably and bring swim wear and a towel. Registration is required.   Gadsby's Tavern Junior Docent opportunity is available for anyone interested in history and working with the public. Gadsby’s Tavern Museum buildings were the center of business, political, and social life in early Alexandria, and volunteers bring this history to life for more than 25,000 visitors a year. Learn about all aspects of the operations in this small museum as you assist with public programs and tours given to visitors from around the world.   The National Education Association (NEA) is looking for responsible students and/or adults to help with their convention in Washington, D.C. 1 – 7 July 2008, from approximately 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. This volunteer service would be an excellent way to fulfill students’ community service requirements. Although transportation is not provided, volunteers get lunch, $40, and parking or metro paid. Volunteers could work one or all days. Training will be provided prior to the convention.   The STUDENT CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION (SCA) offers expense-paid conservation internships to people over 18 who “have the concern, the capability and the commitment necessary to preserve our natural and cultural resources.” Thousands of positions are available nationwide with opportunities in over 50 career disciplines. Interns serve 12 weeks to 12 months while living and working in National Parks, Forests and Historic Sites. Interns gain real career experience and earn an education award and/or academic credit.
