PAYING FOR COLLEGE - W.T. Woodson's Student Services office is bringing in an excellent speaker to tell you about Paying for College. Come to Cafeteria A at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, 15 October 2008 to learn what you need to know. All Senior families, and many Junior families will want to attend. As always, all are welcome. NOTE: This will be the only information session on paying for college and financial aid at WTW during this academic year.

FAIR OAKS COLLEGE FAIR - If you are starting your college search or still looking at all, you will want to attend the Fair Oaks College Fair on Sunday, 19 October. This one is HUGE. (You will want to get a family ticket online. See below.)

If you want great workshops, attend the COLLEGE NIGHT at Hayfield Secondary School on Monday, 20 October.

SLOAN CAREER CORNERSTONE CENTER - offers a great resource center for those exploring career paths in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, computing, and healthcare. Visit www.careercornerstone.org
PORTFOLIO REVIEW CANCELLED – The Portfolio Review originally scheduled to be held at South Lakes High School in Reston, VA. has been cancelled. Please remove it from your calendar.
ACCREDITATION – Learn how the post-secondary schools (colleges/career training schools) you find interesting are accredited. The State Counsel of Higher Education of Virginia posts information on every post-secondary school certified in Virginia at www.schev.edu/Students/collegelistAlpha.asp?from=k12. The federal government offers a site with national accreditation data at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.asp. The federal site also includes special program accreditation which can be very important when seeking a job.
AMTRAK DEAL – offers a “Buy One Ticket, Get 50% Off Companion Ticket” discount for students traveling with a parent or guardian. The discount is available for travel until 18 December 2008. Also, up to two additional children ages 2 – 15 may accompany each adult at half the regular (full) adult rail fare. Go to www.campusvisit.com, complete the online survey, and submit for the special Amtrak promotion code. Use your code to book your ticket with an Amtrak agent (you may only book through an agent) at 800.872.7245. Tickets must be booked 7 days in advance, are valid throughout the U.S., but are not valid on Acela Express or Auto Train. Some blackout dates apply. If you have problems with the online survey, call 800.775.9469.
CHECK BEFORE YOU GO – Don’t assume a college rep visit is at W.T. Woodson. It is important that students and parents who plan to attend college rep visits click into the visit to discover and verify all of the details of the visit right before leaving for the event. This year, several colleges have had to change their location, date, and/or time. Know before you go!!. NOTE: College rep visits held at W.T. Woodson are for students only. Local Information Sessions are for students and parents.
CHECK OUT www.freerice.com. This is a cool vocabulary-building site that gives free rice through the United Nations. The vocabulary words are interesting and challenging, and each correct answer donates 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger. If you get the word wrong, the word will be shown again so you will have the chance to answer correctly from what you learned. Check it out!
COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY – Students who qualify for the College Partnership Program enjoy special meetings that will help them understand college preparation needs, the college application and scholarship processes, and much more. To qualify, students should be the first generation in their family to target a college education in the United States. In addition, they need to fall into one or more of the following categories: Show potential for high academic achievement, but may not consistently demonstrate it; Demonstrate the ability to complete college work, but may need motivation to sustain interest; Represent a family with income insufficient to support college without financial assistance; Demonstrate interest and enthusiasm for learning at school; and finally, Demonstrate leadership in school activities. Applications for this program are due 31 October 2008 and can be found in the Student Services office sith Tish Marshall, Earline Wilson, or Grady Ford.
COLLEGE REP PASSES IN FAMILY CONNECTION – Students can sign up to attend college rep visits in Family Connections. Ask Mrs. Ishii or your counselor how. You may even have a friend who knows how.
COLLEGEBOARD TOLL FREE – There is a new toll-free Customer Service number reachable from anywhere in the United States: 866.756.7346. From international locations, call 212.713.7789. Remember, more information is online at www.collegeboard.com.
COMMON APP & UNIVERSAL APP – Some colleges use the Common Application or the Universal Application. If you are using either of these applications, check to see if your colleges require a supplement. Your application will not be complete until you have submitted all required parts.
COMMUNICATIONS – Exercise care when providing your email address. Many colleges and businesses are using email as their primary form of communication, so be sure you list yours accurately. Students should establish usernames that are appropriate before they start communicating with colleges.
CORNELL BUS TRIP - sponsored by the Cornell Club of Washington, DC is offered to first-time visitors this fall. The bus departs on Sunday, 16 November at 7:15 am and returns Monday, 17 November at 8:30 pm. Buses depart and arrive at Montgomery Mall, Democracy Blvd, in Bethesda, MD on the blacktop parking lot behind Sears. $100 covers the cost of bus transportation and dinner Sunday night. Participants will need money for fast food lunch en route to Ithaca, Monday's breakfast on the Cornell campus, fast food meals on the way home, and any purchases at the Campus store. DRIVER EDUCATION PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT - Partners for Safe Teen Driving Program will be held Thursday, 23 October at 7:00 pm in Cafeteria B. Learn about licensing requirements, parent/teen driving practice, insurance issues, laws, and an overview of driver education. All parents are invited, but parents of sophomores should try to attend. FAFSA4caster – is a new Web tool from the US Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid. It is designed to assist high school juniors and their families who are planning for education beyond high school. Students can receive an estimated Expected Family Contribution, discover Pell Grant eligibility, reduce the time needed to complete the FAFSA when they are Seniors, plus receive guidance on the next steps for applying for admission, applying for federal student aid, and paying for education beyond high school. Access FAFSA4caster by visiting www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov and go to the links in the lower right corner of the home page. A Spanish version isavailable. FREE RESOURCES – Don’t assume that all service providers are straight forward. There are companies that will take advantage of your desire for guidance in the college search process. Remember: All services and resources that you need are FREE in your Career Center – plus your school counselor will be happy to help you with your search.
GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR THE GIFTED – JUNIORS who would like to self-nominate and be considered for the Governor’s School for the Gifted need to visit their counselor. Opportunities exist in the following areas: humanities, sciences, foreign languages, visual or performing arts. Don’t wait. Pre-applications are due 20 October.
GUARANTEED ADMISSION AGREEMENTS - Are you considering beginning your college education at a community college and transfering to a university in Virginia? Discover what the basic guaranteed admission agreement (GAR) is with each of the 21 participating Virginia universities easily at http://myfuture.vccs.edu/transferwheel/. HBCU BUS TOUR - sponsored by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Continental Societies, Inc, will visit Virginia State University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, and Virginia Union University from 10 - 11 November 2008. MAKING THE GRADE: ESTABLISHING GOOD CREDIT – is an excellent publication funded by a grant from the Virginia Law Foundation. To find and print a copy, go to www.vba.org/credit.pdf.
ONLINE INTERVIEW PRACTICE – The Washington Post has an interesting online interview site. Students can participate in a virtual animated interview, answer tough questions, select appropriate attire, and negotiate salaries at www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/jobs/nti/index.html.

See what your child has done with college and career research! Get important emails sent to parents. See your student's GPA, personal inventory results, and post-graduation plans. Discover FREE career and college research tools. See scattergrams of W.T. Woodson students' college application results that will help you assess two aspects of college competitiveness. “PREPARING FOR COLLEGE” FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS - SCHEV (The State Council for Higher Education in Virginia) has created a Spanish section on it’s website to serve as an online resource for Spanish-speaking students, parents, and the high school and postsecondary personnel who work with Virginia’s growing Hispanic population. It is available to all interested users at www.schev.edu/students/Espanol/Espanol.asp The site provides background information on Virginia’s system of higher education as well as useful tips on how to prepare and pay for college. Myriad of topics addressed.
SPANISH EXPLANATION OF THE US COLLEGE APPLICATION SYSTEM – If Spanish is your most comfortable language and you want to understand how U.S. colleges handle the admissions process, go to www.naviance.com/community/podcasts/200704-zelaya.mp3. This audio file is supposed to explain the process well.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES PREPARING FOR POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES – This excellent pamphlet is provided by the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) in the U.S. Department of Education, explains the rights and responsibilities of students with disabilities who are preparing to attend postsecondary schools As the responsibilities of postsecondary schools are significantly different from those of high school, this pamphlet is worth reading. WHAT DOES YOUR INTERNET PROFILE SAY ABOUT YOU? U.S. News.com reports that college admissions counselors and employers may not only be reading your application and interviewing you to decide on your application. They may also be checking out your web presence, and if you’re not careful, finding embarrassing pictures and postings. Before sending in your application, do some searching of your own to see what is out there. There are also new internet companies who will do this for a fee. STANDARDIZED TESTS FOR COLLEGE - The ACT or SAT test is frequently requested by colleges for admission purposes. Most colleges will take the highest SAT math and the highest SAT verbal score a student makes. NO SAT TESTING AT WTW - Due to renovation, there will be no SAT testing at W.T. Woodson for another year. Students planning to take SAT tests are urged to register well before any deadline to ensure that they will have reserved seats at a location close to home.

Eknowledge/NFL SAT & ACT TEST PREP – the Department of Defense, eKnowledge and a group of NFL players donate multimedia SAT/ACT Test Preparation products to Service members and their families worldwide. These programs can be used as a stand-alone instruction tool, or as a supplement to other preparation materials. Students can study at their own pace and the program provides feedback on learning progress, rest readiness, and more. FREE - A.WORD.A.DAY – Prepare for those standardized tests by expanding your vocabulary. Go to http://wordsmith.org/words/today.html and sign up to receive A.Word.A.Day in your mailbox every day! The site provides pronunciation, definitions, parts of speech, usage, quotations, language of origin, etc.
FREE - ACT PRACTICE TEST – Go to www.actstudent.org/index.html, take the practice test and discover the correct answers, as well as explanations for those answers. General test preparation information is also available at the site.
FREE - NEW SAT READINESS PROGRAM – Check out the SAT Question of the Day! You can go to the SAT Preparation Center section of http://www.collegeboard.com/ and get access to test directions, sample questions, and a full-length practice test. The SAT Preparation Center is free.

  • Princeton Review has created an online test preparation site so thorough that just the section on basic test taking skills can take 2 hours. Paid for by the U.S. Army and designed to help students prepare for standardized tests through basic math and English skills, you will be asked if you would like a recruiter to contact you. Your answer will be honored, yes or no. Users need to be at least 13 years of age and will have 45 days to complete the course. TEOFL AND TSE TESTS - Registration for the TOEFL iBT fills up very quickly, so register as soon as possible. A new feature will enable you to view which test dates and locations have availability. Go to the Learners and Test Takers section at www.ets.org/toefl and select TOEFL Locations and Dates. The site is updated every 24 hours. To register, visit the registration section of the website. WORKSHOPS / SEMINARS / CLASSES
GMU DANCE WORKSHOP – The George Mason Dance Department is offering a workshop for high school Juniors and Seniors, who are serious about their study of dance. The workshop will be from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm on Saturday, 25 October 2008. This workshop is FREE and held by the outstanding GMU faculty. Space is limited, so contact your counselor as soon as possible with permission to provide your name and contact information to the program. You must tell your counselor no later than 16 October in order to have your contact information sent.
TV AND FILM ACTING WORKSHOP - offered by the Columbia School of Broadcasting, will be held for 9 sessions on Saturdays starting 8 November 2008. The workshop is open to High School seniors desiring a career in film or TV and must be eligible for graduation in 2009. Each participant will have an opportunity to perform on camera every class. The program costs $2,500, which includes a registration fee, tuition, materials, and diploma. Interested students should request a copy of the curriculum and schedule in the Career Center.

SUPPORT GROUP for Grandparents or Other Relatives Raising a Child Under 18 – serves families in Fairfax County, Falls Church City & Fairfax City. NEW SCHOLARSHIPS AND COMPETITIONS

ABBOTT AND FENNER BUSINESS CONSULTANTS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS is offering $1000 scholarships to high school juniors and seniors who write essays answering one of two questions. More information is available at the Career Center or at www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm. Entries are due by June 20, 2009.
AMERICRAFT 2008 ESSAY THEME “MADE IN AMERICA” is offering scholarships of $1000 and $5000 to high school students enrolled in grades 9-12 who submit an 800-1000 word essay discussing why it is important for Americans to buy products Made in America. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Essays will be judged primarily on originality and content. High school transcripts must be signed and submitted by school official. Applications are considered based on: scholastic standing; citizenship and leadership; and financial need. All awards will be paid directly to an American university or college at the time of tuition acceptance. Applications are available in the Career Center and are due by November 1, 2008.
HARRY F. BYRD, JR LEADERSHIP AWARD - for excellence, leadership, character, and duty awards $10,000 to an outstanding high school seniors from each congressional district in Virginia. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be returned there no later than 3 November.
MENTAL_FLOSS “COLLEGE AIN’T CHEAP” is offering five $10,000 scholarships to high school seniors over the age of 18 who will be attending an accredited 2/4 year college or university in the United States or Canada in the fall of 2009. Applicants must write a 750 word essay explaining why you should win a $10,000 prize for tuition/books. Applications and essays must be submitted online and are available at www.tuitiongiveaway.com Applications and essays must be received by January 31, 2009.
NFIB YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS are offering a minimum of 400 merit-based scholarships, both non-renewable and renewable, ranging in value of $1000 - $10,000. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior who is entering a 2 or 4 year accredited university, college or vocational/technical school; demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit; and meet or exceed recommended academic standards. Students selected as semi-finalists must submit a high school transcript and a 1,000 word essay. Applications must be submitted online and are available at www.NFIB.com/YEA. Applications are due by December 15, 2008.
RIDER UNIVERSITY’S HIGH SCHOOL WRITING CONTEST is offering scholarships in three categories: essay; fiction; or poetry. Prizes are awarded in each category in the amounts of $100, $50 and $25. Entrants can be in grades 9 – 12. Essay and fiction entries must be no longer than 5 pages; poems must be no longer than 50 lines. All entries must include a letter from a teacher stating that the work is original. More information is available at the Career Center. Entries are due by December 12, 2008.
VINCE KASPAR PRIZES FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS, presented by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 227, will be awarding $200, $100 and $50 prizes each for a poem or piece of visual art. There are no theme or length/medium requirements.
