FREE!!
- Yes, the FAFSA, which is required for
any financial aid at college, is free. FAFSA is the
acronym for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Do your own FAFSA. (You can get help at a Super Saturday
if you need it.) Do NOT pay anyone to do it for you.
You have to assemble and give them everything.
Providers may even have you complete forms with all
of the information exactly as it is found on the FAFSA
and charge you to click "send." |
• |
DEADLINES
ARE RAPIDLY APPROACHING! -
Remember, even merit scholarships are often tied to
an FAFSA filing. Have you checked the deadlines for
filing for financial aid at all of the colleges to
which you applied? Do so immediately to ensure that
you meet those deadlines and get the best aid. There
are three types of forms that may be requested: the
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid),
the CSS Profile (not free), and a college generated
form. Some colleges will request all three types of
forms. Act promptly on the CSS Profile if it is required.
Initial processing may take a little time. |
• |
GET
YOUR PIN NUMBER NOW – The best way
to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) is to file online. In order to file online,
a PIN number is required. The student needs a personal
pin number and the parental unit needs a single PIN
number. The student will use his/her personal PIN
number as long as he/she is in school. The parental
unit will use the same, single PIN number for all
dependent children, including their current Senior.
Get all the details about PIN numbers at www.fafsa.ed.gov/before004.htm.
To get your pin, go to www.pin.ed.gov. |
• |
SUPER
SATURDAYS – Get
FREE help completing the FAFSA, line by line, from
our trained counselors. Some events have information
sessions and foreign. College Access Fairfax
will provide a $100 Book Scholarship at each site!
All sites have some foreign language translation.
(See Mrs. Ishii if you wish to know about more distant
locations.) You need to bring the following to the
event you choose to attend:
- Social
security numbers (or permanent resident numbers)
of parents and studen;t
- Dates
of birth of parents and student;
- W-2
forms or other wage statements for parents and
student;
- Current
statements for checking, savings, and other asset
accounts;
- Investment
records, including 529 plans or other prepaid
college plans;
- 2009
tax return if completed (preferred), or 2008 return
if no;t
- Alien
registration card if not a U.S. Citize;n
- Military
families: LES for any month in 2009 (student and/or
parents;)
- PIN
(Personal Identification Number) for both parental
unit and student (can be obtained at the event
or at www.pin.ed.gov
ahead of time to speed things along);
- Student
driver’s license number, if you have one.
