"89 Virginia public schools have met the rigorous criteria required to earn the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence. The award is the highest honor under a new incentive program for schools and school divisions created by the Board of Education to advance Governor Kaine’s “competence to excellence” agenda." W.T. Woodson High School is one of those schools. Learn more at

National Merit Scholarship Program - "The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)— a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.3 million entrants each year — and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements." The PSAT/NMSQT® only counts towards scholarships when the test is taken in the Junior year. Taking the test in earlier years provides excellent practice opportunities.

National Merit Semi Finalists and Finalists - Our W.T. Woodson National Merit Semi-Finalists scored in the top fraction of one percent among Virginia test takers on the PSAT test in October of 2006. Eight of Woodson's talented students have been chosen as National Merit Semi-Finalists, and six have been selected as Finalists (*). Congratulations go to Class of 2008 students:
