July 1: The recent exposures of measles in Fairfax County highlight the importance of immunizations for all children. It is especially important for infants and toddlers in our community to receive their immunizations on time. Parents are encouraged to visit their physicians or a county clinic before the last minute August rush just before school begins.
- Parents who are registering children for kindergarten now in Fairfax County Public Schools must have up-to-date shot records. Principals will exclude those students who have not complied with the required immunizations.
- Students entering 6th grade are required to have booster shots.
- Students entering 7th – 9th grades may need a booster dose of Tdap vaccine if at least five years have passed since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.

June 26: The Fairfax County Public Library Summer Reading Program encourages children and teens to read for pleasure during summer vacation. Completed preschool to sixth grade reading logs and teen reading logs must be turned in to your library branch by September 5 to receive a coupon book full of free and discounted prizes.
June 24: Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is continuing to register students for two popular summer programs: the Institute for the Arts (IFTA) and the summer Online Campus Program.
IFTA offers performing and visual arts enrichment programs for rising 7th through rising 12th grade students. Courses will be held July 6-July 30. Visit http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OHSICS/FineArts/IFTA/index.htm for more information.
The Online Campus provides opportunities for eligible rising and current high school students to accelerate their academic program by taking a summer course for first-time credit. June 23: Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is recruiting speech-language pathologists for the 2009-10 school year. FCPS offers an incentive of $3,000 per year for the first three years of employment in a Virginia public school division to speech-language pathologists employed full time or $1,500 per year for the first three years of employment in a Virginia public school division for speech-language pathologists employed part time and who hold a valid Postgraduate Professional License or Pupil Personnel Services License with the Speech-Language Pathologist preK-12 endorsement. June 15: The Virginia Department of Education is asking parents of students with disabilities to complete an online survey that will allow parents to give their input about Parental Involvement as a means of improving services and results for children. The 2008-09 Parent Survey for Indicator 8 (Parental Involvement) of the State Performance Plan (SPP) can be completed by parents now. The survey is currently open and will close on June 30. Details.
June 12: The Cappies, "Critics and Awards Program," is a program through which high school theater and journalism students are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, write reviews, and publish those reviews in local newspapers. The student critics in the National Capital Area voted for awards that were presented to many Fairfax County Public Schools students at the 10th annual gala. Details.
