May 12: Children who may be in need of special education preschool services are referred to Child Find for developmental screening and possible referral for additional comprehensive evaluations to determine eligibility for services.

May 9: Robyn Leersnyder has faithfully mentored students for eight years at Beech Tree Elementary School. More information.

May 7: Parents of students with low-incidence disabilities are invited to a workshop entitled 'Preparing Your Child for a Smooth Transition to Secondary School' on May 14 at Sprague Center from 6:30 - 8:30 op.m. This workshop will address the following: Differences in the secondary school environments, changes in academic expectations, increased social demands in adolescence, and strategies to help prepare your child. May 6: Each of the 18 schools received a grant of up to $500 to carry out their proposed litter prevention, litter control, or recycling project. Students presented their projects at the awards ceremony at the Fairfax County Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration on April 19, 2008 in Annandale. Details.

May 5: A weeklong celebration of the 10th anniversary of Carson Middle will be held during the week of May 5-9.  On Monday, there will be an unveiling of a commemorative garden of indigenous plants, and students will wear green to school to show their commitment to caring for the environment. More school events.

May 1: Family Connection is a web-based service designed especially for high school students and their parents. Family Connection is a comprehensive website that helps students make decisions about academic plans, colleges, and careers. Find out more.

April 30: Master the arts! Attend Institute for the Arts (IFTA) and create an artful summer. Now in its 21st year, IFTA provides an opportunity for students to hone their skills within one discipline or experience a variety of fine arts offerings. Details and registration information are available

April 29: Parents of children who live within in the boundaries for Kings Park Elementary and who will be entering kindergarten in September are invited to an evening kindergarten session for parents on Tuesday, April 29, at 6:30 p.m. More school events.

April 28: Adult and Community Education’s Volunteer Learning Program (VLP) applauds its tutors for offering their time and talents to help adults achieve their goals this past year. VLP welcomes new volunteers and celebrates the spirit of volunteerism all year, and encourages everyone to take a moment to pay tribute to volunteers during National Volunteer Recognition Week, April 27-May 3. April 23: Fifth and sixth grade students at Floris Elementary will present “A Small Part of the World,” a musical by Sally Albrecht, on Thursday, April 24, at 9:30 a.m. for students in grades 3-6, and at 7 p.m. for parents and members of the community.  The performance will feature multicultural songs, dances, and speaking parts representing Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Israel, Russia, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Argentina, Mexico, Canada and the United States. April 18: ArtSpeak!, comes to Poe Middle at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, as Broadway stars Hunter Foster and Jennifer Cody talk about their careers.  Foster is currently appearing in Kiss of the Spider Woman at the Signature Theater; he has appeared on Broadway in Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers, Les Miserables, Grease, and Footloose. Cody is appearing in the New York production of Junie B. Jones; she has appeared on Broadway in The Pajama Game, Grease, Seussical, Cats, and Beauty and the Beast. More school events.

Reduced fee and tuition waivers are not available for this elective program. Registration for IFTA is on a first-come, first-served basis, until the program reaches full enrollment. Students will then be placed on a waiting list.Details and registration information are available.

April 15: Dust off those leather jackets and poodle skirts and get ready to rock and roll at Key Middle’s presentation of Grease on Wednesday, April 16, at 2 p.m., and Thursday, April 17, through Saturday, April 19, at 7 p.m.  Students created the sets and props and choreographed the dances.  Tickets are available at the door.  More school events.

April 11: Interested in a real high school musical this weekend?  See Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at South Lakes High School, Grease at Lee High School, and Gypsy at Stuart High School.

April 9: Will your child be 5 years old by September 30, 2008? If you answered yes, it is time to register your child for kindergarten. Registration is under way at your neighborhood elementary school for the graduating class of 2021. Complete information about starting school is available.
