MEN WHO BENEFITTED

Ellsworth "Bumpy" Johnson
Johnson was the black man that ran the Numbers Game. He became known as somewhat of a "Robin Hood" in that he took money from the rich men to help support the poor ones. He was the one man in New York who was not afraid to stand up to the white gangster Dutch Schultz.

Dutch Schultz
Schultz was the most infamous gangster of all of New York. He made his fortune during the 1920s through bootlegging alcohol. In 1935, he was declared "public enemy number one." After Prohibition, he attempted to rule the Harlem Underworld, including Johnson's Numbers Game. He hated Johnson because Johnson believed in helping the poor with his illegal money.

Lucky Luciano
Luciano viewed crime as a way to dominate over the government. He was the man who benefitted most from organized crime. He was against the killing Schultz committed because he believed that it would bring too much attention to the area, thereby hurting all crime. He also attempted to get a cut of the money from the Numbers Game.
