Chapter 10
By: Michelle Dindi R. Pateņa

Chapter Summary
This chapter opens with Invisible Man's crossing a bridge in the fog to get to Long Island where the plant for Liberty Paints is located. When he arrives at the plant, he is interviewed by Mr. MacDuffy. He tells TIM that he's going to be working for Mr. Kimbro, also known as Colonel, and shows him to the locker room where he gives TIM a locker to put his things in while he is in his working clothes. Mr. Kimbro immediately tells TIM what to do without a greeting or anything. He instructs TIM to put 10 drops of dead black liquid dope in the white paint to make it whiter. TIM is confused and questions Mr. Kimbro, who tells him not to worry about it and get to work. He does as he is told and puts 10 drops of dope into the paint, stirs it, and paints a board as a sample. Kimbro checks up on him and comments on how white the samples are.

TIM is running out of dope so he is told to go to the tank room and fill up the container. When he gets there, there are five different tanks and he does not know exactly which tank has the dope that he needs in it. He speculates by smelling it and deciding on one, he fills the container up with it and resumes his job. When he glances at the samples, it is not the white paint that he had seen. Instead, the samples are covered with sticky goo. He repaints them in a panick and when Kimbro comes by to check up on him, the samples are still wet. Kimbro notices that the stuff in the graduate is concentrated remover. Of course, TIM does not know better because he does not give any specific instructions pertaining to which tank to get the dope from. Kimbro is satisfied after that and sends the samples away. He tells TIM to see MacDuffy because his job there is over. MacDuffy sends him to the basement of building No. 2 where he is going to work for Mr. Brockway.

Symbols
Dope
The dead black liquid that TIM puts in the white paint to make it whiter symbolizes the fact that things are not always what they seem. It is quite interesting to note that the more dope one puts into the paint, the whiter it gets.

This chapter is set in Long Island where the Liberty Paints plant is located.

Significant Quotation
"That's it. That's all you have to do,...Never mind how it looks. That's my worry. You just do what you're told and don't try to think about it" (200).
This is said by Mr. Kimbro while instructing TIM to put 10 drops of dead black liquid in the paint to make it whiter. TIM questions him and this is what he said. This quotation is significant because it shows how the white man is keeping the black man blind by depriving him of any knowledge of what he is instructed to do.
