
Grandfather: Although he is deceased, Invisible Man's grandfather plays an active role in the chapter. He has such an enormous impact on TIM. After any major occurrence in his life, he wonders how his grandfather would feel about it.
Naked Woman: She is the dancer at the battle royal. Her presence helps to show the idea of black men's looking at white women and how in their society it is viewed as wrong.
Tatlock: he is the large black man that TIM is left to fight with in the final bout of the Battle Royal. Tatlock wins the fight.
The Crowd: The crowd is comprised of the important white men of the city. They taunt the blacks during and after the battle and use them for their entertainment. A variety of characters speak but most do not have names.
Symbols
Boomerang: The boomerang serves as a symbol of the path that a person's actions take. All actions have a boomerang effect in that they will come back and affect a person in some manner.
Naked Woman: The naked woman allows the reader to see the fear that is associated in a black man's looking at a white woman. The black men want to look but fear a reaction from the white men for stepping out of line.
Blindfold: The blindfolds placed on the blacks before they go to battle
symbolize the blinders that are placed on them in life. They are not able to control their motions or find their way.
Motifs
Lights: Ellison uses lights very effectively in this novel. During the battle royal, lights are mentioned by TIM in his thoughts. Lights are used to provide the effect Ellison wants in the setting.
Paper: TIM receives a certificate for his achievements after the battle. It is important to note his excitement upon receiving this gift after all the embarrassment and pain he was just put through.
Grandfather's Saying: Grandfather's saying and his presence present themselves many times in this chapter. TIM feels the need to please his deceased grandfather.
Blood: Ellison uses blood numerous times in this chapter. He describes the blood during the battle royal that covers TIM. TIM uses the description of how it was so bad that he did not know if the liquid running down his body was sweat or blood.
Skin Color: Skin color plays one of the largest roles in the book. It is evident that the whites frown upon the blacks and even categorize them. TIM is referred to as a ginger-colored man.
Setting
The setting, for the majority of the chapter, takes place in the "main ballroom of the leading hotel." In many instances however, the reader is taken into the mind of TIM.
Quotations
"Learn it to the younguns." This is grandfather's saying. They come
back and haunt Invisible Man before and after any major decision in his life.
"Had the price of looking been blindness, I would have looked." This quotation shows the need for the removal of the restraints on the blacks. They have been so deprived that when the naked white woman presents herself, there is nothing that could take their eyes from her.
"Blindfolded I could no longer control my motions, I had no dignity." This quotation originates from the Battle Royal. The white men place the blindfolds on the blacks for their own entertainment. This act shows the blinders that are placed upon the blacks in society.
Thematic elements
Invisibility: Invisibility plays a major role in the novel. Besides the title, Ellison uses it to show the effect of the white man's ignorance on the morale of the blacks. They feel invisible.
Blndness: Blindness serves as one of the tools the white man uses to control the inferior blacks. The blacks are never able to see things through their own eyes.
Violence: Ellison uses violence to illustrate the friction that this rocky relationship between the races causes. The Battle Royal serves as a perfect example.
