Chapter Summary

This final chapter reveals the true motives of the Brotherhood. Invisible Man realizes that this society is not perfect. He becomes outraged and confused about why the leaders do not want to use the anger of the people to gain strength for the movement. He is stumped over the Brotherhood's wanting to forget about Harlem and its significance to the movement. During the riots in the city, an anonymous call comes to him telling him to go to Harlem because he is the only one that can change the dangerous actions of the people. During these riots, Invisible Man finally notices the power of the people. The fact that the people are leading themselves without the Brotherhood astounds him. He wants to show Jack that this is what would eventually happen and that he was right all along.

He supports the people of Harlem in what they were doing to the city. He witnesses and participates in the burning of an apartment building that is not getting the proper care required of it. He also is indirectly introduced to Rinehart's lifestyle. A man of many faces, Rinehart is many things, and he is what the people want him to be. Invisible Man wants to be the same as Rinehart.

During the chapter, Invisible Man opens the brief case he has kept since the Battle Royal. In it he also has kept the anonymous letter sent to him. When he drops the letter, he matches the handwriting to that of his new name, given to him by Brother Jack. At this time, the world comes down on Invisible Man. He begins to realize that Jack had not acted as his brother. He realizes that Ras the Exhorter had been right about the Brotherhood all along.

Invisible Man finally realizes that Brother Jack had used him to advance the Brotherhood and is now using the people of Harlem. Ironically, he keeps running as his grandfather once told him to do. He starts running to Mary's house, yet he knows his time there was over as was his time at Men's House, the college, and the Brotherhood.

During the chapter there is the theme of blood. Everywhere he looks there is blood. His people are dying and he cannot not do much about it. He witnesses looting and violence, he gets shot, and so do those around him. When his life is put on the line, Invisible Man uses a spear to get away from Ras the Destroyer. There is a combination of milk and alcohol on the ground throughout the city. The major theme of the chapter is the level of invisibility Invisible Man achieves. He finally ends up underground after falling into a manhole from being chased. He decides that this should be his home until he is forced to move again.
