Chapter Eighteen is a turning point for Invisible Man. The change is foreshadowed by the link of the chain given to him by Brother Tarp, which is similar to the one on Dr. Bledsoe's desk. The appearance of the link lead to Invisible Man's expulsion from the campus. The appearance of the link in this chapter is followed by Invisible Man's expulsion from the job in Harlem. Once again, he is expelled from the place he most desires, his Eden. The link is just he first comparison between the two incidents. Invisible Man's lack of representation for the charges brought against him is also similar. The haste in which the punishment is given and Invisible Man's feelings of being fooled are also present in both incidents. The reminder of his grandfather is also an omen. The grandfather's last words have an effect on Invisible Man, and clearly Brother Tarp's words do the same because Invisible Man fiercely defends his right to display the link that is tied to the story. A motif present in this chapter is hands.
