Project History

42 WSHS students in French 5, AP French Language and Portfolio Prep: Photo participated in this interdisciplinary project.

This project began in the French 5 class with a look into the style of French Romanticism literature. Students read the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac to gain an understanding of some of the classic elements of this artistic movement. These students then researched and shared their findings with the AP French students. The students in the AP class read selections of Romantic literature in order to grasp fully the essential style of the movement.

AP French students began to write short plays in the romantic style to share with their parents at a spring reception. In groups of three to four students, they brainstormed ideas that would incorporate the styles that they had studied. Many students agreed that love and tragedy should be central themes in their works. The students worked through numerous drafts, while French 5 students continued their work developing a web site to house the plays and complementary photographs.

The web writers researched styles of web sites to find some basic design ideas. Expanding off of the project of last year's class, they looked for ways to enhance the site and make it more sophisticated. The students had to learn new techniques for web writing to create all the elements of this site.

During the second quarter, students in photography classes held photo sessions with the members of the French classes. Here they photographed the actors in character in the style they had learned from their guest speaker, Tom Brett, professional photographer. The French 5 students then added these photos to the plays on web pages. Along with pages on literary research, these pages were linked together into this website. The website opened March 29th, 2001, with a reception and a performance of the original plays written by the AP French students.
