Upcoming fund raising events

Fairfax County Public Schools does not authorize or engage any for profit company (such as a telemarketer) to represent its interests in selling advertisements or otherwise seeking financial support for school system programs and activities. Authorized fund-raising activities are undertaken only by students, Fairfax County Public Schools employees, and Fairfax County Public Schools affiliated organizations (such as Parent Teacher Associations and Booster Clubs). All payments and contributions are to be made payable to the "Fairfax County Public Schools," a particular school, or a Fairfax County Public Schools' program or activity. Should you have any questions or concerns about the legitimacy of a person or entity purporting to represent the Fairfax County Public Schools or an individual school, please call the Office of Student Activities at 703-913-3860.

The Giant Food A+ Bonus Bucks program is back! You must re-designate your Giant Bonus Card each year. Please visit their web site to designate WSHS. Have your card in hand as you will need the number. Complete the information on the opening page and click on "continue school listings." Click on VA - Fairfax and "lookup." Scroll down to Springfield and designate WSHS. We are school 02095. We have had great success with this program in recent years and with your support we will continue to. Thank You!

Members of the Class of 2009: Don't forget that you will get to experience the Senior Capstone Project this year! You will get all the information that you need in your English and Government classes in the fall, and you will attend a project approval session in September to make sure your ideas for your project hours and research paper will fit within the parameters of the project. At this point, you might just want to start thinking about ideas for what you might like to do to help your community during your senior year. (posted July 8, 2008)

WSHS alumni, a survey has been created to assess interest in a multi-class reunion. Several alumni have indicated that it would be more cost effective to host multiple years at the same time. Take the survey to have your voice heard. (posted May 28, 2008)

June 4 at 7:30 p.m. is the organizational meeting for a community action group to mobilize the West Springfield community to have WSHS included in the FCPS Capital Improvement Plan. This meeting will be held in the school cafeteria. Under the current plan WSHS, which has never had a full renovation, is not slated to be reonvated for 20 - 30 years. (posted May 25, 2008)

May 9 is a regularly scheduled full day of attendance for all students. The calendar in the student planner is incorrect. (posted May 1, 2008)

West Springfield community members interested in learning more about the criteria for proposed school renovations are invited to download the Renovation Queue Study. This document provides detailed information about the point system consultants are to use to determine a school's place in the renovation queue. (posted May 7, 2008)

Please join Springfield Supervisor Pat Herrity andSpringfield School Board Rep Liz Bradsher for a WSHS Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, May 6th at 7:00  p.m. in the school cafeteria to discuss the state of the facilities at WSHS and dire need for getting WSHS on to the FCPS renovation program. Explore the endless career & training options available to students after high school. The Pathways to Success: Alternatives to Four Year College Resource Fair will be held on Thursday, May 8 from 6 - 8 p.m. This is a fabulous opportunity to guide yourself down the road to a successful future as you meet with representatives from area apprenticeship programs, companies, two-year residential colleges, technical schools, organizations & associations to learn about the many post-secondary careers that await you. On Tuesday April 8, 2008, West Springfield High School will have a 3-hour late opening for a staff professional development day. The bell schedule for Tuesday will be as follows:

  • First Bell 10:25
  • 2nd Period 10:30-11:15
  • 4th Period 11:20-12:05
  • 5th Period and Lunch
    • 1st Class 12:10-12:45 B Lunch 12:50-1:20
    • 2nd Class 12:45-1:20 A Lunch 12:10-12:40
  • 6th Period 1:25-2:10

We're Counting on You - Every three years, the commonwealth of Virginia requires all school districts to conduct a census of their residents. The census data are used to help determine equitable distribution of the portion of the state sales tax revenues designated to support public education programs. Fairfax County Public Schools also uses the data to help forecast future school enrollment and new funding requirements. With such vital economic and planning issues at stake, it is critical that all households respond to the census—whether or not they have school-age children. (posted February 29, 2008)

The Friday night performance of "You Can't Take It With You" has been rescheduled for 5:00 PM Sunday, Nov. 18 since there will be a WSHS varsity football playoff game at the school on Friday night. Additional performances of "You Can't Take It With You" are Thursday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 2 PM and 7:30 PM. Visit the Theatre site for additional information and ticket sale information.
