INTERIOR VIDEO CAMERAS

WSHS would like to install cameras in our school to support having a safe and secure environment. We would like to have cameras installed to cover our cafeteria plus an additional ten cameras for high traffic areas such as our lobbies and some high traffic hallway intersections.

The total cost estimate for this installation at our school is $42,210.  This cost includes $8000 for camera installation in our cafeteria that the school system plans to pay.  In addition, WSHS has $15,000 in proffer funds to dedicate to this project, leaving our local school portion to be $19,210.  This cost, of course, is a rough estimate but we expect that amount to be within 10-20% of the actual cost. There may be adjustments to a final estimate.  A final estimate will be requested from the vendor once permission is granted to move forward.

WSHS will not use any appropriated funds to install interior cameras. For us, we will pay for the cameras using our accumulated community use credits.  In addition, our PTSA has agree to pay a portion of the cost as well.

During the next thirty five days, we will be actively seeking input from our students, our faculty, and our community. I will be meeting with our Student Government and our journalism classes during this period of time and will have conversations with many others. We will schedule a special meeting to take place prior to our May 7th PTSA meeting at 6:00 PM for anyone who would like to come out discuss interior cameras, share their thoughts, walk our school, and ask questions.  I would love to see everyone come out and share in the dialogue!  If you are unable to attend the meeting, emails are certainly welcome as well to voice support or opposition to our plan and to ask questions. Please send emails directly to mggreenfelde@fcps.edu We will use our Faculty Advisory Committee and our internal news to communicate with our faculty and gauge their support or opposition. On Friday, June 1st, all of the input that has been collected throughout this year will be collated and, if there is sufficient support, I will request permission from the Superintendent to move forward on installation.

NEW BELL SCHEDULE for 2012-2013

Dear Parents:
The bell schedule for the 2012-13 school year has been released and West Springfield High School’s bell schedule will be changing as follows:
7:20 – 2:10

FCPS has had to make changes to our bell schedule to accommodate the addition of approximately  4,000 students to our school system, as well as the opening of three new schools in the county.  These changes, which are designed to increase bus route efficiencies, will not increase FCPS’ transportation costs.
We understand that changing bell schedules impact students, parents, and staff.   The 2012-13 bell schedule is being released now so parents and staff have enough time to make any necessary plans.  We appreciate your understanding as FCPS makes changes to accommodate our enrollment growth.

BREAKFAST – A GREAT START TO BEING SMART

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It “breaks” the “fast” by replacing the energy reserves used overnight.
School aged children especially teens are the biggest breakfast skippers. Research shows students who eat breakfast:
• Learn better
• Are more alert and attentive
• Are more likely to participate in activities
• Eating breakfast may also reduce the risk of childhood obesity

If you have a breakfast skipper in your home, plan and offer quick nutritious choices such as juice, whole grain cereal and toast, breakfast bar, or bagels and milk or yogurt. Parents don’t forget your own breakfast. You are a role model for your children.
