The Wizard of Oz, by Frank L. Baum. Dorothy  and her dog Toto, carried away into the fabulous land of Oz, are sent on a quest with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, to vanquish the Wicked Witch of the West. F Bau

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Ten-year-old Opal and her father, "the preacher," move to a small town in Florida, where Opal adopts a stray dog, whom she names Winn- Dixie (yes, the grocery store chain)/ The dog helps her make an assortment of friends and to get over the pain of losing her mother. Misty of Chincoteague by  Marguerite HenryPaul and Maureen bring into their lives a wild foal from the annual Assateague-to-Chincoteague(Virginia) pony swim/roundup, which is still held every year. F Hen

Winnie the Pooh
, by A.A. Milne. The adventures of  the bear Pooh and his friends Eeyore, the melancholy donkey, Tigger, the exuberant tiger, and the always cheerful Piglet. F Mil

Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Marty has to cope with many moral issues when be adopts an abused dog. F Nay

Z for Zacharia, by Robert C. O'Brien. Nuclear war has destroyed the world, but Ann and her dog are able to survive in the sheltered valley she and her family called home, until her existence is threatened by a stranger. F Obr

Freak the Mighty, by W.R. Philbrook. Also published as The Mighty, Big Max and tiny Kevin are as opposite as can be, but become best friends as Freak the Mighty, friend  to the underdog and foe of evil bulliers. F Phi

The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth George Speare. In 1687 Kit Tyler is sent from her home in Barbados to live with her aunt and uncle in Puritan Connecticut, where she befriends an old Quaker woman.  F Spe

Mary Poppins, by P.L. Travers. When Mary Poppins joins the Banks household as nannie to Michael, Jane, and the twins, nothing is ever quite the same. F Tra

Little House on the Prairie,
by
Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura and her family stake their claim on a piece of property in Wisconsin and forge a new life in the wilderness. F Wil

Any of the Nancy Drew (teen crimesolver), Hardy Boys (teen crimesolvers), or Cherry Ames (nurse/teen crimesolver) series.

These books (except the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames) are available for loan from the WSHS Library, which is open
Monday through Friday from 8:00 to 3:30 beginning
July 30.

The loan period is 3 weeks, no renewals, with overdue fines of $1 per non-holiday weekday. All WSHS Library obligations must be cleared prior to checkout.
