Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program

FMF annually provides 600 American primary and secondary school teachers and administrators with opportunities for professional development through short-term (3 weeks) study visits to Japan. Its aim is to increase understanding of Japan among American educators who will help shape and educate the next generation in the United States. The program is designed to provide first-hand opportunities to experience Japanese culture and education through school visits, interacting with teachers and students, seminars, homestay, and etc. Upon returning to the U.S., participants are to share their experiences in Japan with their students, colleagues, and communities in the form of curriculum improvement, development of teaching materials, workshops, and other activities. Japanese educators as well as students will also have an opportunity to learn about education in America and to start communicating with their American counterparts.
This project has brought high school students and teachers from Japan and the U.S. together through visits and on-line activities in spring and summer. We have used these shared experiences to help students develop and conduct collaborative research using the internet during the academic year. Students in the US and Japan will participate in international on-line conferences as concluding activities.
