Order Ciconiiformes

by Ashleigh DeWitt

Long-legged Waders

KEY CHARACTERISTICS: Often confused with the marsh birds, the members of this order have large bodies and long necks. Herons have long, sharp bills that they use to spear or grasp fish or other prey.

IMPORTANT EXAMPLES: Herons, Bitterns, Egrets, and flamingos

DISTRIBUTION: Worldwide, except polar regions.

Flamingos are used for a number of different activities. For example, they are used in Disney World for decoration in several parts of the park. Also, a nearby community church, does an activity with pink flamingos. They pick out someones house and place pink flamingos all over the yard. The residents, if they want to give money, pay certain amounts for people to come get rid of the pink flashy birds. It is a very clever fundraiser. Just a couple examples of how flamingos tie into the human world.
