The word salamander means 'lives in fire'. Ancient people used to think that salamanders lived in fire because they would crawl out of logs thrown onto the fire. They also believed that because salamanders lived in fire that they had a very high tolerance to heat, but this is also not true. Salamanders actually do not live in fire, and they prefer cool, damp places.
